What Info Is Needed to Pick Out Replacement Axle for Trailer

Updated 11/13/2025 | Published 10/27/2025

Question:

Hello, I currently have a mid 70s Toyota truck bed trailer that I used for camping. Id like to swap the axle and flip the leaf springs for more clearance. The trailer itself does not weigh very much. Id say about 500-600 pounds. Im curious about the 5x4.5 bolt pattern. It will also be my first axle swap so Id like any guidance you can provide. Thanks for the help!

Hey Doug, to pick out an axle for a trailer you need to know the distance between the spring seats where the axle attaches to the leaf springs on the trailer, the distance from hub face to hub face and also the axle capacity.

If you can get me the two dimension I mentioned I can let you know if we have a compatible axle.

Hey Doug, were you able to get the spring seat and hub face measurements for your Toyota truck bed trailer? Once you have those numbers, I can help confirm if that 5 on 4-1/2 axle will be a good fit. Let me know what you find so we can narrow it down.
