Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this trailer axle with the idler hugs and easy grease spindles. And this is gonna be a great option for those of you who are needing to replace an axle for your trailer, or if you are building your own trailer, custom made, this is gonna do a great job for you either way. Of course, an axle is a super important component in your trailer suspension system. So you do wanna make sure that you're getting the right one for you.

We do have lots of options available here at etrailer.com. This one itself is a 2 3/8 inch diameter steel beam. That is going to have a maximum weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. So it will work really well for your trailer that have that 3,500 pound weight capacity. if you're using it in the single axle configuration.

If you're gonna use it in a double axle configuration, obviously that weight capacity will double. The next thing that you're gonna need to know to determine that if this is gonna work for you or not. It's gonna be the length to ensure that it's gonna fit your trailer's width. So there's two ways that we measure the length. The first is gonna be from our spring seats here.

So these spring seats are welded onto the axle. So they are gonna be a nice fixed measuring point for us. So from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other, it's gonna be right at 74 inches. The other way that we're gonna measure is from our hub faces. So from the outside flat edge of one hub to the outside edge of the other, it's gonna be right at 89 inches.

So make sure that that's gonna work for you to ensure that the axle will fit properly. You can see what this does have a slight bend here in the middle. That's gonna be our camber to ensure that even as our trailer is under load, our wheels and tires are going to ride properly. You're not gonna have to worry about uneven wear on your tread, that sort of thing. You'll get your full grip as you're going down the road. So it's gonna be great for your straight line and pulling and that sort of thing. So our easy grease spindles here on this side, you can see these do have the grease zerk built in there. So it's gonna be very easy for you to just hook up your grease gun, pump some fresh grease in there, in between your regular maintenance to make sure that everything is gonna be well lubricated. The cap is gonna fit right over top, it's got that plug there. So just use a flat head screwdriver or something, pop that plug off. That will give you access to that grease zerk so that you can very easily keep that well greased, well lubricated, and make sure everything's gonna be operational. Our spindles are welded in place, in a straight no drop configuration. So it's going to straight out from the axle. These are actually welded with a patented welding process that is going to slide over the axle rather than being butted up against it. So it's actually gonna produce about a 40% stronger weld to help prevent a spindle failure. And it's also going to help make sure that everything is lined up properly as well. Our cast iron idler hubs are gonna be nice and sturdy and very durable. Our hub bolt pattern is five on 4 1/2 inches. So it's gonna work for your 13 to 15 inch wheels. It does come with all the bearings, braces, seals, lug nuts that you're gonna need to get it installed. The bearings are prepacked. So you're not gonna have to worry about packing those yourself when you initially get this all put together. So that's one last thing that you'll have to worry about. Save you some mess there, and then just add a little bit of grease through that grease zerk. You'll be ready to go. And you can see, we do have a brake flange mounted on place here. So obviously you won't be using that with your idler hub, but if you we're to ever want to add brakes, you have that option there. It's also got, it's pre-wired so that if you wanted to add electric brakes, this wire runs from one side of the axle to the other. So it's easier for you to get those electric brakes hooked up. The spring seats that I mentioned before, these are welded to the underside of the axle. So that's going to allow us to mount our leaf springs in the underslung orientation, and that's gonna provide a nice low ride height to make sure it's easy to load and unload your trailer. This is CSA, QAI, and SAE-N certified. So you can trust it is going to meet those quality standards. It's gonna hold up well for you to do a good job. So if you are looking for a replacement or a new axle for your trailer, this is gonna do a great job. Make sure that that weight capacity and those measurements work for you. And if it does, think you'd be very happy with it. If not, we do have lots of other options available for you. So make sure that you're getting the right one for you. Axle seems solid. "Pre-installed" bearings had to be put back in because they slid out easily when installing the hub on the axle. I also had to go out and purchase new cotter pins (both were installed to a point where removing them resulted in one breaking and not trusting the other) and dust caps were heavily dented. That said, axle came 2 days earlier so I got to fish more.
