Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

The axles that I ordered last year are still working out great. But even better than the parts was the service I got from etrailer. It was so great working with a company who took the time to listen to my project and help me get the right parts I needed, especially coming right off the heels of a terrible experience dealing with bad information and wrong parts from a competitor. Even with some damages in shipping, the returns/ and replacements were no hassle, with most issues being quickly resolved and not even costing me any additional downtime. As a contractor keeping a small fleet rolling, your competency and professionalism have made me a customer for life!! You guys at etrailer will be my first stop for trailer parts.

With the purcahase of additional spring seats, I was able to get more clearance to the bottom of the trailer. Easy grease, where have you been all my life.

by: 11/30/2023

Welds looked good however the assembler failed to rotationally align the weld on spindle/brake mounts properly. One was about 3 degrees off and the other side was an 9.5 degrees from the 12 oclock position. Not sure about the thickness of the tube. Kind of strange to look at when the top of the brake system is not at 12 oclock. Found this after I removed the spring pads on this 2.1 degree camber axle so I had to jig the tube to fine zero toe to locate the new pads as the 2.1 camber tube changes wheel alignment depending on the bend/ springpad relationship. Not sure the AVG JOE is going to be able to move the spring pads when the brake mounts can't be used as a reliable ref point. If the toe is off from improper pad rotational location. the trailer will eat tires at best or worse cause a loss of controlled tracking and someone could get get killed.

So far performing well. Have not been able to use trailer yet as much as I wanted to, don't use the grease nipples. Its easy to regrease without.

by:

I would have gave you five but when I contacted to about the missing bolt and no shalf protector on the one end. Bolt was missing on the brake plate.

by:

Not the first time I have used Etrailer's services, always satisfied with their service, products, and delivery. Painless....

by:

Everything is working perfect with that replacement axle. I have definitely put it to the test a lot of miles with a lot of weight. Very highly recommended.

by:

No issues with the bearings

by:

Replaced the old axles with these on my 7x16’ equipment trailer, been nothing but amazing since I’ve installed them. Hauled thousands of pounds since and with minor greasing and normal maintenance they’ve been great.

by:

Very easy installation. Everything fit perfect.

by:

The box carrying the axle was empty. You might want to protect the ends of the tube better so it doesn’t fall out during delivery.

by:

Always hair free when I buy from ev tra iler

by:

exactly what my trailer needed! thanks!

by:

I haven’t installed the axle yet, but it looks to be pretty solid. Time will tell. Irrelevant to the axle, but I have to touch up some paint where UPS dropped it down on my concrete. Not a big deal though. It’s going to get beat up by road debris anyway.

by:

Axle arrived fast, was exactly what I ordered and needed. Install went well with no problems.

by:

It worked out great. I am ordering another today.

by:

Received. Cannot use till all parts come

by:

Worked great on my trailer.
It is a older
trailer and I needed to move the anchor points on the axel but that was not difficult to have done.
Axel works great.
I love the easy grease feature.

by:

This is a high-quality, reasonably priced axle. It was delivered quickly to my home and installed easily.

by:

The mounts were 1/2 inch closer than advertised. I was able to persuade the springs inward to compensate. Good price and fast shipping.

by:

Great product and customer service

by:

The axle was exactly what I ordered and showed up much quicker than I expected. I installed it in about an hour. Good quality. Having the wire for the brakes already ran inside the axle made it very easy to rewrite the brakes, nice feature.

by:

PaulaT was excellent in helping resolve a wrong axle issue. I ordered one too short, but she was able to fix me up.

by:

Good product and good service

by:

They have alot of parts. Just takes ti.e to learn to navigate the parts list. The videos they have are vary helpful.

  • How to Choose Replacement Axle for Lowe's 5x8 Trailer
I'd be more than happy to help you out! If you can measure the hub-face and spring-center measurements of your current axle that will help me know what you're needing. For example, the etrailer Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # e65GR has a hub-face measurement of 89" and a spring-center measurement of 74" (see attached).

  • Replacement Axle With 72 Inch Hub Face to Hub Face Measurement
We do have a 72 inch hub face to hub face axle, but not one with a 69 inch spring seat to spring seat measurement. That said, what you can do is use the 72 inch axle and have new spring seats welded on where needed. There are two axles with a 72 inch hub face to hub face measurement, one with a 2,000 lb capacity and the other with a 2,200 lb capacity so be sure to get the one with the capacity you need: - 2,000 lbs: Trailer Idler Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles # e78GR - 2,200 lbs:...

  • How to Find Replacement Axle for Hammerblow Trailer
Hi Ryan; to find a replacement axle you need to know the capacity as well as the hub face to hub face measurement (which is considered the length). It is also helpful to know the spring seat measurement but the spring seats on a replacement can be cut off and moved if need be. I would check to see if there is an axle tag with the capacity if you aren't 100% sure. I also attached a video below which shows how to measure. Assuming you have a 2k axle we have the following lengths available: -Trailer...

  • Looking For 3,500 lb Axle For Boat Trailer
Hello Duffy. We do have one axle with the spring seats at 58", part # e78GR although this is a 2,000 lb idler axle, so no brake flanges. All of our 3,500 lb axles will be much longer than you are needing, with spring seats at 74" or 80" and hub face measurements of 89" or 95". So, we really do not have anything that will be close to your specifications. I suggest reaching out directly to an axle manufacturer like Dexter. They have a lot more axle options or they may be able to custom make...

  • 2,000 lb Trailer Axle with 5 Lug Bolt Pattern that Cab Fit 12 inch Wheel
Hey Vince, the flanges on hubs of the axle part # e37YR are too large in diameter to fit behind a 12 inch wheel. If you went with a Dexter idler hub instead on this axle like the # 8-259-5UC1-EZ it will work since it has a smaller overall diameter. To go that route it would make more sense to get the axle without hubs part # e78GR. These are not made in the USA... We have a similar Dexter axle that is made in the USA part # T20BTR-EZ-7258.

  • How To Measure An Axle To Determine The Correct Replacement
All of our axles are measures across from hub-face to hub-face. I have attached a diagram below showing where we measure the axle from. The diagram shows the Trailer Idler Axle Beam # e78GR. We will look at the hub-face length and the distance between the spring seats when determining fitment of an axle. If you are replacing an old axle we would want to try to get you an identical replacement. It is also good to know the weight capacity of the old axle.

  • Is There 2,000 lb, 72 Inch Axle With Spring Seats on Top
Nope, you aren't missing anything. There are not any 2k, 72 inch axles with the spring seats on top, just with standard spring seats, like the Trailer Idler Axle Beam # e78GR. What you can do is have new spring seats welded on, which admittedly isn't as easy as just finding an axle with pre-existing spring seats, but it's really the only option. For this use Spring Seat for Typical 2,000-lb, Round Trailer Axles with 1-3/4" Diameter # TRSS175.

  • Is There a 3,500 Lb Trailer Axle with 72" Hub Face Length
I do have an option for you but all of our axles within the hub face range you to specified have a weight capacity under 3,500 lbs. The Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs part # e78GR for example has a hub face to hub face measurement of 72" and has a 2,000 lb weight capacity. It does not have brake flanges installed so if you wish to add brakes you'd need to weld these on yourself using the Brake Mounting Flange part # 4-34. You could then complete your setup using the Electric Trailer Brake...
