Updated 07/11/2024 | Published 07/03/2024

Question:

I have a utility trailer with a 2.22 inch Dia axle with two 5 lugs wheel tires, supported on coil springs. I want to replace it with a new axle. Any recommendation for higher weight support.. With leaf springs?

Hello Ausel,

What you're talking about is a complete re-work of the suspension of your trailer. You may be able to do this but it depends on if your trailer has the ability to add hangers to mount the springs and axle. Starting with the axle, in order to choose the correct replacement axle for your trailer you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center; I have added a link below to a video which walks you through how to measure.

The other thing you need to know is the weight capacity of the axle you need, which should match or exceed the GVWR of your trailer. For example, the Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # e84YR has a 2,000 lb capacity and measures 60 inches from hub face to hub face and 48 inches from spring center to spring center. I've added a link below to our selection of axles for you which you can filter through by length.

You'll have to find the right hanger kit for the correct spacing of the leaf springs as well. For example, the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Spring # APS4 requires 20" of distance between hangers with use of the Double-Eye Spring for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles - 20-3/8" Long # e84SR. You'll then mount the axle with U-Bolt Kit # CE23000.

I've added a link below to our selection of hanger kits and leaf springs as well.
