Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of etrailer by AxleTek Trailer Axles - 72 Inch Long Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs - e32GR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this trailer axle with the idler hubs and easy grease spindles. This is gonna be a great option for those of you who are needing to replace an axle on your small trailer, or if you're building your own trailer and you're wanting to have more of a custom suspension system, this is gonna do a great job for you. Of course, there are lots of different axles out there, we've got lots available here at etrailer.com with different links and different weight capacity, so you wanna make sure that you're getting the right one for your trailer. This is a 1 3/4 quarter inch diameter round steel beam, so it's gonna have a weight capacity of 2,000 pounds. Of course, you wanna make sure that that's gonna work with your trailer's weight capacity, and then the second consideration that you're gonna need to make sure that this is gonna work for you is gonna be the length.

So there's two different ways of measuring the length of an axle, the first is gonna be from our spring seats here, where our leaf springs are going to attach to, these are welded onto our axle, so they are gonna be a nice static reference point, so that we can make sure that we're getting the correct measurement. So from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other, it's gonna be right at 58 inches. The other way to measure is gonna be from your hub face, so from the outside flat edge of one hub to the outside flat edge of the other, it's gonna be right at 72 inches. So again, make sure that that length and weight capacity is gonna work for your trailer. You can see, this does have a slight bend right here in the middle, that's gonna be our camber, that's going to make sure that even when our trailer is under load, we're gonna have a nice even road to tread contact with our wheels and tires, so that we're not gonna have to worry about uneven tire wear, making sure that everything is gonna be riding nice and level, and we're gonna get that full tread contact across the width of our tire and wheel.

So our spindles are welded in place using a patented welding process, so the spindle actually slides over the axle rather than just butting up against it, so that's gonna create about a 40% stronger weld there, so it's gonna help prevent spindle failure. You can see, it as welded in a straight configuration, so there's no drop to it whatsoever. We've got our built-in grease zerk here that's gonna make it super easy for us to keep this lubricated in between our typical maintenance, where we're packing the bearings and that sort of thing. So we've got the cap here with the plug, that plug can just be removed with a flat head screwdriver or something along those lines, pop that plug out, and you'll be able to just hook up your grease gun right to that zerk to get that lubricated. Like I said, that's not gonna replace your regular maintenance of having to pack your bearings, it's just gonna be kinda in between that maintenance to keep everything nice and lubricated, pump that grease in, and help to fill up that cavity.

Our idler hubs here are a nice cast iron construction, so they are gonna be very sturdy and durable. They will have a hub bolt pattern of 5 on 4 1/2 inches, so they're gonna work for your wheel sizes 8 inches to 12 inches. The bearings, races, seals, and lug nuts are all included here, so everything that you're gonna need to get this installed. The bearings do come pre-packed, so it's gonna make it very easy to get this all installed, you're not gonna have to worry about doing all that packing that first time, just get it all slid in place, then pump some extra grease in there, and you'll be ready to go, so saves you a lot of mess and hassle having all that pre-greased for you. Again, back to our spring seats, these are welded to the bottom of our axle, so that's going to allow us to mount our leaf springs in the underslung orientation, which is going to allow a lower ride height makes it much easier to load and unload your gear from your trailer.

This axle does meet the CSA, QAI, and SAE- N certification, so it is gonna do a great job, hold up well for you, while you get the job done to make sure that your trailer is going to have a nice suspension and support as it's going down the road. It also comes with a limited lifetime warranty, so if you we're to have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. We're always happy to work with our customers to make sure you're getting good quality products and you're having a good experience. So like I said, make sure that weight capacity and that length worked for you, if it does, I think this is gonna be a great option for you, I think you'll be very happy with it once you get it installed. That's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Review from a similar etrailer Axle Beam w Hubs in Trailer Axles

Axle seems solid. "Pre-installed" bearings had to be put back in because they slid out easily when installing the hub on the axle. I also had to go out and purchase new cotter pins (both were installed to a point where removing them resulted in one breaking and not trusting the other) and dust caps were heavily dented. That said, axle came 2 days earlier so I got to fish more.
