Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).


The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.


If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.


etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.


Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.


Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.


Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)


Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)


Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at this trailer axle with idler hubs and easy grease spindles. Now, when you're picking out an axle to replace an actual on your trailer, it is really important that you get the right one for your trailer. There are lots of different sizes and weight capacities available for trailer axles. So you wanna make sure that you're getting the one that's gonna work for your trailer because an axle is a very important component in your trailer suspension system.

So, this axle here is a one and three quarter inch diameter round steel beam. That's going to have a maximum weight capacity of 2000 pounds. So it will work well for your 2000 pound or your trailers with a 2000 pound weight capacity. The next very important measurement is going to be your length. So there's two important measurements with your length.

Two different ways of measuring, the first is gonna be from your spring seats here. These are welded onto the bottom of your axle. So it's a pretty sturdy, secure place to measure from. So, from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other spring seat, it's gonna be right at 58 inches. The other measurement is gonna be from your hub face on one side to your hub face on the other.

That's right at 72 inches for this axle, you can see right here in the middle, we do have a little bit of a bend that is going to be our camber. So that is designed to allow even when your trailer is underweight, it's going to make sure that your tires are riding properly so that they're not voting, potentially causing uneven wear on your tires. This is gonna make sure that you have maximum traction and tread contact with the road so that your wheels are gonna ride nice and even for you. So, that's a nice option or a nice feature there for you with this axle. On the ends there, we do have our spindles.

These are straight spindles, so there's not gonna be any drop to them at all. These are welded in place using a patented welding process that actually slides the spindle over the axle. So it's going to be a lot more secure than your systems that just kind of butt up to the axle. This is gonna produce about 40% stronger spindles to help prevent spindle failure. You can see, we do have this built-in grease circ here on the end. That's gonna make it much easier for us to keep our system lubricated. So rather than having to take our cap off, you know, disassemble all the components, pack our bearings, put it all back together. We can just open up our cap here, it's got this rubber plug that we can pull off using a flat head screwdriver or sometimes even our fingernails to be able to pull that open and that's gonna give us access to that grease circ. So we can just hook up our grease gun, pump some new grease in there. We're not gonna have to pack it by hand or worry about disassembling it. So it's gonna make a much easier and faster for us to get that greased up and lubricated like we need it to be. Our hubs themselves are a six and one quarter inch diameter cast iron idler hub. So this is without brakes, it's gonna work on your trailers that don't use brakes. This does have a hub bolt pattern of five on four and a half inches. So that is measured from this over to where this would be if there we're another one here. So that's four and a half inches. So, this is gonna be great for your 13 inch to 15 inch wheel sizes. The idler hub does come with the bearings races seals and the lug nuts. You're not gonna have to worry about packing those bearings because they do come pre-greased. So just put it all together, pump a little extra grease through that grease cert there, and you'll be ready to hit the road. We do also have our spring seats welded in place. Like I mentioned before. I just wanna point out that these are welded on the other side of our axle so that we can mount our leaf springs in the underslung position. So that's going to help with our deck height, make sure that we have a nice low ride height makes everything easier to load and unload into our trailer, being nice and low like that. This axle is made here in the USA. So you can trust it's made to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US but also meets the CSA, QAI and SAE-N certifications. So you can trust it's made to those high quality standards. It's gonna do a good job for you. So again, make sure that this is going to meet the weight capacity and length that you need. Also make sure obviously the brakes, aren't a big deal for your trailer. And if you need brakes on your axle, we do have other options available as well as other weight capacities and lengths and those sorts of things. Axle seems solid. "Pre-installed" bearings had to be put back in because they slid out easily when installing the hub on the axle. I also had to go out and purchase new cotter pins (both were installed to a point where removing them resulted in one breaking and not trusting the other) and dust caps were heavily dented. That said, axle came 2 days earlier so I got to fish more.

For an axle that meets your specs I recommend going with our etrailer Trailer Axle # e37YR which has the 58" spring-center measurement, a 72" hub-face measurement, has an easy-lube spindle, and comes with idler hubs that are compatible with a 13" wheel. When it comes to the tires and wheels we have a few options for you; a 175/80-13 size tire would be more than enough and for that I recommend the Kenda part # AM31985...

    I do have a solution for you, but with you having the 09067 outer bearing and 14130 inner bearings, we will not have anything that will replace your hub. Though you will need to measure a few things to make sure it will work, I recommend replacing the axle.   • Looking For Replacement Seals For An Old Utility Trailer That Has 7205E Bearings
    The 7205E number that you found will actually mean you have a 30205 bearing. I have run into this bearing before and, unfortunately, we do not have parts that will match it. This is due to it being an extremely uncommon size, which then makes the spindle uncommon as well. This means the closest seal we will have will be the TruRyde Double Lip Grease Seal # 34823, but it will measure a bit differently at 1.249" for the inner diameter and 1.983" for the outer diameter.
