Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Review of etrailer by AxleTek Trailer Axles - 2200 LBS Trailer Idler Axle - e43GR

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at this trailer axle with the easy grease spindles. This is going to be a great option for those of you who are needing to replace an axle on your trailer, or for those of you who are building your own trailer. Of course, an axle is a super important component in your trailer suspension system, so you do want to make sure that you're getting the right one for you. We've got lots of different options available here at etrailer.com.

This one is a one and three quarter inch diameter steel tube or steel beam. So it's going to hold up really well for you. It's got a maximum weight capacity of 2,200 pounds. So, it will work with your trailers that have that same weight capacity. And then, of course, you are also going to need to know the length of the axle here so that it will match up with your trailer width.

There's two very important measurements to know. The first is going to be your spring seat measurement here. So, from the center of one welded-on spring seat to the center of the other, it's going to be right at 48 inches. And the other measurement is going to be your hub face. So if you we're to, once you put your hubs in place from the outside edge of one to the outside edge of the other, it's going to be right at 60 inches for this.

So, make sure that that's going to work for your trailer. This does have a little bend here in the middle. That's going to be our camber to make sure that even when it's under load, our tires and wheels are going to be riding the correct way so that you're not going to have to worry about uneven tire wear and that sort of thing when you have weight on your trailer. This does have the easy grease spindles that are going to make it much easier for you to keep your spindle lubricated. And you can see, we do have this grease insert here on the end.

That's going to make it super easy to just hook up your grease gun, pump some grease in there. And then that grease is going to flow through around this backside here. You can see where it's going to come out right there. And that's going to help to keep everything well-lubricated. It's not going to replace having to do your regular maintenance, yearly or whatever that is in your situation, but it will help to keep that lubrication going in the meantime. And this spindle is a straight spindle. You can see it is welded in place onto our axle here, and it's actually welded using a patented process that's going to allow the spindle to be inside of the axle. So, it's going to line up better for you rather than just butting up against it and welding. That's going to ensure about 40% stronger spindle connection. So it's going to help prevent spindle failure and make sure that everything is lined up properly. So it's going to work really well for you. It is welded on without any drop. You can see it is nice and straight. So on the side here, we are going to have that spring seat that I mentioned before that is welded to the underside of our axle here. So it will allow us to mount our leaf springs in the underslung orientation. That's going to ensure a nice low ride height to make it easier to load and unload our trailer. This does meet the CSA, QAI and SAE-N certified standards. So you can trust it is going to be a good quality axle for you. So, if it does meet that weight capacity for your trailer and that measurement is right, this is going to do a really good job for you. If any of those measurements or weight capacity is off for what you're needing for your trailer, like I said, we do have lots of other options available here at etrailer.com. So that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael. Thanks for watching..

Received exactly when expected. I realize they where odd shaped items but I think they could’ve been packaged a little better than plastic wrap. The rubber boot over the spindle was a great touch but the flange bolts were unprotected. Other than packaging I was very pleased with my order and they bolted right up.

Number one quality parts. Had to replace the axle due to lack of lubrication of the wheel bearings. Love the concept and ease of keeping the wheel bearings supplied with fresh grease on the e-z lube axles.
