Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

Galvanized steel parts are great for marine use because they are hot-dipped in zinc after being stamped. This creates a coating that is typically 3 mil to 5 mil thick. This thick, all-around coating allows galvanized steel products to provide years of use without rusting or corroding, making them a good choice for boat and snowmobile trailers.

All GAL-DEX hubs undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater

Axle Dimensions

HubAndSpringLengths

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring centering hole on one side of the axle to the spring centering hole on the other.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The axle and hub kit arrived on time, un-damaged and fit as advertised. Replaced old axle on my boat trailer. Installation was simple and went as planned. I love the ease of re-greasing with the grease in place hubs. They make routine maintenance simple. Have used for almost 1 year on my boat trailer with no issues! 725130

etrailer was temporarily out of stock and had to wait 3-4 weeks. I received a phone call from them after about 4 weeks when it looked like the ETA was getting close. They asked if I wanted the 3 day shipping refunded and whether or not I preferred to wait longer. Really great customer service. A week later it arrived. This axle/hub setup is a perfect fit for the Haul Master Super Duty Folding Utility trailer from Harbor Freight ITEM#62671. Also purchased was item "Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D" Code AM30859 Tires/Wheels. 454040

Great product. I bought the harbor freight trailer last year and within a couple of weeks I had problems with one of the Hubs. The bearings went bad and the made in China hub had a crack in it. Could not find an exact replacement and tried a bunch of trailer stores around the Chicagoland area. Then a few months later the other hub started to wobble when I got home and replaced it also with a close match but not perfect. Every since then the camber was off and I didn't feel safe driving on the highway. After a year of looking I finally found this website and they had the Hubs and axle to replace the bad quality of the made in China original one that came with the harbor freight trailer. Took a couple of easy hours to replace and I couldn't be any more happier. Drove it on the highway for 50 miles and everything is still nice and tight so far and it looks way better too. Plus, the easy lube system is the best part! George kept in contact with me from the beginning to the end letting me know that it shipped and that it arrived at my house. 2 days to get to my house! I will be back to purchase more things in the future! 550740

Still going strong with no issues what so ever. Best part is the yearly greasing of the hubs. Take the cap off and grease up until all the old grease comes out! Money well spent!

I have used this axle for about a year now and made several trips of 300 to 400 miles round-trip. I have had no problems at all and the trailer pulls well. I used this axle and hub assembly to upgrade the cheap axle that came on my Harbor Freight folding trailer. This axle was a direct fit and no modification were made to the trailer. I did pair this with 15-inch radial trailer tires, so I could not use the original fenders that were sized for 12-inch tires. I simply went to my local farm supply and grabbed a couple of fenders for 15-inch wheels and a couple of angle brackets from the local hardware store and I was back in action. I use this trailer to carry two Hobie Outback kayaks and fishing/camping gear behind my Subaru Outback. 581436

I received this product yesterday and had the trailer up and running in a short time. The only problem was the tube that the shaft came in had broken open during shipment and one of the cotter pins got lost in shipment. I went out and purchased the replacement. This axle was used to replace a damaged one that I have that used to belong to my step father. He and I used to work seven days a week on a sod farm until he became ill and passed away. 559598

It’s a great looking axle. This is perfect fit for the trailer I purchased from the discount hardware store. Straight forward to install. It was a pleasure working with everyone at etrailer. Couldn’t be happier. i have just one outstanding question. My old axle was round 1 3/4”. Are most people reusing old bracket (which I decided to do) or buying square bracket and if so what size? i have included some pictures of trailer and also some closeups of bracket holding axle to spring. Once again a pleasure doing business with etrailer. 608579

Since you now have an axle with a square tube, you really should use a U-bolt kit that features square U-bolts like CE23102.

I have an 79 ski boat and trailer I'm restoring and the trailer axle was one of the last things I needed. The price was what I expected and shipping was very reasonable.I've never replaced an axle before so the product description and measuring instructions helped a novice like me get exactly the right one. The axle and hubs were easy to assemble and the "customer also bought" section on the website showed me the right mounting hardware. I haven't towed it yet but I expect no problems. I also bought the springs and custom hitch from etrailer and are very satisfied. I would recommend etrailer to anyone to get it right the first time. 501076

The trailer that this axle went on has two cross country trips each one about 3,400 miles or more with at least a 1,000 lbs in the trailer each trip. It was so smooth that I often forgot the trailer was there. This axle was quick and easy to install and came with everything needed to complete the job. I have no regrets and I would get this again if I ever need one. 453766

I bought a new Harbor Freight trailer and after assembly was unhappy with the quality of the axle and hubs. Because of all the time and effort put into assembly I did not want to try to return it, besides the frame of the trailer was great for the load I will be carrying. I just couldn't trust those hubs to go the distances I needed. The C.E. smith axle was just what I was looking for. It fit perfect took less than an hour to install and increased the load capacity. With the addition of the 5 on 4 1/2 hubs and galvanized wheels it looks great also. My only mistake was not knowing exactly what I was looking for and needing to cancel and re-order twice. All my fault. Be smart, take advantage of the superior customer service and you will get it right the first time. once I got over the whole being a man and not asking for directions trip, Lisa D. took over and everything went perfect. She was very patient and kept me informed and up to date with emails and telephone calls. I will definitely use e-trailer again for any trailer needs I may encounter 431570

The axle and hubs were received exceptionally fast for free shipping. The products are reasonably high quality for the price. I am still in the process of installing them but they are going together easily and quickly and will do exactly what I need them to do. (Mid summer is not the time for a boat trailer axle to collapse!) Great product. The only glitch, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the product, is that the two grease cups were crushed beyond use I assume during shipping. I would recommend this axle assembly to anyone. 406907

I had to replace the axle, hubs and leaf springs and wheels on my utility trailer and wasn't sure what I needed or how to measure for the right parts. The gal that helped me (sorry, can't remember your), was very patient and walked me through all of the steps to determine the correct part numbers for the application. Every part was correct including the U-bolt kit and bolts for mounting the leaf springs. It all went together smoothly and the trailer is back on the road. 398847

Haven't installed the parts yet. Ordered what I thought was correct. Erika called me and pointed out I ordered the wrong U-bolts for the axle I selected. She even stayed on the phone while I went outside (with my cell phone on speaker) and measured all the dimensions of my broken axle. Received the parts today. Hoping to have it installed tomorrow. 295636

Ask the Experts about this CE Smith Trailer Axles

Do you have a question about this Trailer Axle?

  • Estimated Weight rating for 1-1/2-Inch Square Trailer Axle
  • Trailer axles will often have some kind of labeling on them to indicate their weight capacity, sometimes a sticker but sometimes a metal plate too. If very old that axle sticker or plate could be long gone. The 1-1/2-inch square axle we offer, CE Smith Trailer Axle # CE33201GA-HUB, is rated for 1800-lbs and includes 5-on-4-1/2 idler hubs and also comes with bearings, races, seals, grease caps, wheel studs, lug nuts, and marine-grade wheel bearing grease. • Unfortunately, we do not have any trailer hubs with the bearings that you need. Would you be open to replacing the entire axle? This would be the only option we have for you. The spring center is the approximate width of your trailer. This is measured from the center of the spring center hole on one side of the axle to the spring...

  • Replacement Trailer Axle for Boat Trailer
  • The closest axle we have to your measurements is # CE33201GA-HUB which has a hub face of 57-1/2 inches and spring center of 46-1/2 inches. So it's very close. I'd double check your measurements to see if this will fit. The axle also includes idler hubs with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. As well as the bearings, races, seals, grease caps, wheel studs, lug nuts, and grease. It's also galvanized which is great for boat trailers.

  • What Wheels Will Fit the Trailer Axle part # CE33201GA-HUB
  • The CE Smith Axle part # CE33201GA-HUB that you referenced can fit wheels that are between 13 and 15 inches in diameter that have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. I attached a link to a page that has all of the wheel and tire combos we offer with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. You would need to select the diameter wheel you want and the correct sizes will be listed.

  • Estimated Weight Capacity of 41mm Square Trailer Axle
  • Thank you for the photo of your boat trailer's square axle. Typically a square trailer axle that measures 41mm (1.6-inches) on a side will have a weight rating of 1800- or 2000-lbs. We offer one such 1800-lb-rated axle, CE Smith Trailer Axle # CE33201GA-HUB which includes idler hubs, and # CE33201GA which is the axle beam/spindles only. We also offer Timbren axle-less trailer suspensions that entirely do away with the axle beam and leaf springs. These bolt-on kits like # A20RS440...

  • What are the Differences Between Radial and Bias Ply Tires
  • The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire,...

  • Replacement Axle Options for Homemade Trailer
  • Thank you for the photos of your homemade trailer axle. It appears that this part uses straight 1-inch threaded pipe in place of actual trailer spindles. Since this is likely to be difficult to match up to readily available trailer hubs I suggest replacing the entire axle with a complete kit. We do sell spindles, but these are not a DIY-type project since their proper installation requires specialized jigs to ensure the spindle is perfectly straight and concentric. Spring center spacing...

  • How To Put A Trailer Axle On A Barbecue Pit
  • I do have several axles available however, they may need to be modified to work with your application as the narrowest axle we have in stock is the CE Smith Trailer Axle w/ Idler Hubs part # CE33201GA-HUB. This axle measures 57-1/2" from the face of each hub and 46-1/2" from spring center to spring center. The spring center of the axle is the recommended mounting location to place the support that will be responsible for carrying the load for a leaf spring suspension that is usually attached...

  • How to Add Axle to Boat Trailer to Prevent Trailer Sinking Into Wet Sand
  • I understand what you're looking to do and it certainly could be possible to add another axle (and hubs, wheels and tires) that does not have a set of leaf springs suspending it to better distribute the loaded trailer's weight on that sandy beach surface. To get you started I linked our main axle page which displays both regular beam axles like # CE33201GA-HUB as well as the Timbren axle-less suspension kits like # A12WS545 which bolt right on to the trailer's frame. These kits can be...
