Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Replaced the 23 year old Kendra Load Star tires on my utility trailer. Went with the galvanized wheels as I think they'll resist rust better the the original white wheels. From a few feet away they
galvanized wheel almost looks like chrome!

by:

Ordered 3 wheel and tire assemblies to replace my old ones on my trailer, one for as spare. After more than 10 days and back ordered after i ordered them. I get them and they have the wrong valve stems installed. These are load C trailer tires 90 psi. The rubber valve stem that came in them are 60 psi. So now these wheel and tire assemblies cant be used and are now not DOT compliant. My old trailer tires im replacing have metal valve stem which are DOT compliant for 90 psi. After 2 phone calls and a hour waiting to talk to someone. They agreed about the valve stem concern. But no call back with a resolution to the problem as promised. I called back a third time today to the persons extension and it went to voice mail! E-trailer this is a fail!

Thank you for your feedback! I have sent your information over to our customer service department for them to better assist you.

I needed tires for my 5 x 8 trailer because the old tires were cracking on the sides. I priced out several companies and one of the larger discount stores wanted nearly double. I got a better deal buying 2 tires with wheels than if I had gone to a tire shop for just tire replacement. I’m very happy with the price, service and shipping time using etrailer. Thanks much!!

These tires are still working great. I use this trailer frequently and am happy with my tires from etrailer. Will definitely order from them again for tires and other parts. Thx

by:

Good purchase. I up graded to a load C. My trailer doesn’t bounce as much.

by:

Made the order for boat trailer wheels/tires and a hour later got message that order had shipped. Received order in two days. Great job!

Used it today on my boat trailer working Great Thanks

by:

Great customer service. It’s refreshing to follow the product I buy through the entire picking, packaging and shipping process. It arrived fast and in excellent condition and a follow up email ensuring I was taken care of just to top it all off. As long as etrailer does business this way, I’ll be a customer. Awesome job!

by:

Obviously, you'll need to ask me again in a couple of years of heavy trailering, but the tires and wheels look lovely and they were delivered promptly. Another excellent job by you folks.

by:

I am more than happy with this purchase.
The

I feel much safer and secure towing my boat on the freeway at high speeds for long distances with these tires and wheels.

I received the tires within a few days after ordering. They were well packed. Unfortunately, one of the tires was mis-coded as a 5-4.5 wheel, when it was actually a 4-4 wheel with a 5-4.5 sticker. Customer service responded very quickly to ship a replacement, and schedule a UPS pickup. Excellent service.

by:

Tires arrived quickly in great condition (in a Box)! These tires replaced the original tires mounted on white painted "rusted" rims on my small trailer. They will last a lot longer because the rims are galvanized not painted. They also look great!

by:

Exactly what the trailer originally came with. They have been great and I use near salt water.
etrailer shipped this really quick A+

by:

Pleased with the tires/rims. Price was good and shipped quick. Arrived in perfect condition. The free shipping really made the difference between buying locally or ordering from eTrailer. The only negative I have isn't about the tires themselves, but that I wanted to order springs for my trailer as well, but after not finding them on the site myself I contact eTrailer support and was informed they didn't carry them. They're a common leaf spring that I ended up picking up at Academy instead, so it's very surprising to me that eTrailer didn't have them. Anyway, despite that I would definitely buy parts again from eTrailer, if they carry them.

by:

Bought three tires/rims for a small boat trailer. They are holding up so far with no chipping on the rims or uneven wear on the tires. Haven't had to use the spare yet and hoping I never have to.

by:

Exactly what I needed to replace the tires on my Seadoo trailer. Perfect fit pre inflated

by:

Wheel and tire fit perfectly. Runs great down the road. One of my old tires was bouncing a lot (I could see it in my mirror) and the treads eventually wore out. No local tire store would balance a 12" trailer tire/wheel.

The guides and advice on this site take the stress out of ordering online.

Long term review will have to take place later :-)

Just great. Over a year of hauling household furniture and building materials through 500 mile round trips twice a month during all weather conditions...snow, sleet, rain, hot days and nights, put these tires to the test. Never leaked air, no rust in the galvanization, tread wear is even.

by:

Nice wheels, arrived fast! Put these on my son's boat trailer for his 14" Livingston. Price was less than if we took his old rusty wheels and had new tires installed at our Les Schwab Tire Center.

by:

Just installed today...very pleased with the wheels for the price. These people show their pride by shipping well protected product and delivering as promised.

by:

While I don’t put a lot of miles on this trailer, all is good. The company is
easy to work with. Galvanized still looks good.

by:

Fair price, good product, fast shipping and delivery. Thank you

by:

I tell people about etrailer all the time. A friend just bought some radials for his enclosed trailer from u on my suggestion and loved how they preformed on his trip. Price, CONVENIENCE and customer service will keep me coming back and spreading the word!

  • Correct Replacement Tire and Wheel for 2021 Triton PWC Trailer
The Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Wheel # AM30670 does come with a galvanized wheel that has a silver color to them. The design of the galvanized process gives it a rough texture instead of a smooth texture like you see with standard wheel paint. Since your trailer is a Triton PWC for watercraft it likely has this galvanized finish. The only other thing that you need to check is to make sure this tire is the same as what you currently have. This is a 4.80-12 size bias ply...

  • Can Loadstar Trailer Wheel and Tire # AM30670 Fit Hub with Bore Diameter of 2-3/4 Inches
Yes, since the pilot diameter of the trailer wheel part # AM30670 is larger than what you'd need and this has the correct bolt pattern it would work well for you. This wheel centers on the lug nuts which is why having a larger pilot diameter does not negatively affect anything.

  • Is It Okay If Trailer Weighs Exactly 2,100 lbs When Loaded and it has Tire Capacity of 2,100
If you are absolutely certain that your trailer when loaded would not exceed 2,100 lbs then you wouldn't need to worry as you should be fine. I would strongly recommend you keep your tires inflated to their maximum psi though. If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower air pressure than the maximum, the amount of weight that the tire can carry will be reduced. If a heavier load is put on the trailer tire than what is recommended for that air pressure, the sidewall of the tire could heat...

The Kenda Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 that you referenced will work perfectly as a spare for your trailer. The important info you need when picking out a spare or replacement is the tire size, load range, and bolt pattern on the wheel so you can be sure it will fit your hub. This bias tire matches the size (4.80-12), Load Range (Load Range C of 990 pounds at 90 psi) and the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern on your current tire/wheel as pictured....

  • What is the Max Tire Pressure for the Kenda Loadstar Tire
No matter what trailer tire you are using, including the Kenda Loadstar # AM30670, you need to keep the cold psi rating to the what the manufacturer recommends. When you are over or under the recommended pressure then you can cause excessive heat build-up which results in a blowout. Even if it feels like the 990 lbs at 90 psi weight capacity seems like overkill for your trailer this is the best way to maintain your trailer tires. You should be able to find the 90 psi rating somewhere on...

  • What Tire Pressure Should Trailer with 12 inch Wheels be Ran At
With trailer tires like # AM30670 you have to run the max tire pressure rating that's on the sidewall of the trailer. This ensures you get the full weight capacity of the tire and also that you prevent any heat build up which also leads to premature tire failure. Trailer suspension by nature is a bit bouncier than vehicle suspension since there isn't a shock there to dampen the movement of it.

The Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30670 comes with a steel reinforced rubber valve stem rated up to 100 psi so the max fill psi of 90 psi for this tire is within the limits of the valve stem.

  • Correct Inflation Pressure for Trailer 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
Tire size 4.80-12 is not found on vehicles, but is a common trailer tire size on smaller utility- and sport-type trailers. In trailer use you do want to inflate them to the maximum cold psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall. Trailer tires should never be under- or over-inflated since they can deliver their rated weight-carrying capacity only when inflated to their specified pressure. Incorrect inflation can lead to excessive heat which is the main cause for tire failure. All of our tires...

  • Should I Use Radial or Bias Trailer Tires On My Jet Ski Trailer?
Really you'd be fine going with either tire but the better of the two are definitely Radials. Radial tires have a longer life than bias tires, usually provide a smoother and quieter ride, provide better fuel economy because they have less rolling resistance, and are overall much stronger than bias tires because of their construction. Also, you probably had bias tires on your older trailers because up until recent those were considered the better tire for carrying heavier loads, but that...

  • Troubleshooting Tire Wear Down Middle of Tread on Trailer
Generally speaking, a trailer tire will wear in the middle of the tread when it is over-inflated, however that does not appear to be the case with the tires on your trailer. With that being said, I do not recommend lowering the pressure on the tires to below the maximum psi recommended on the sidewall. Doing this will essentially lower the tire's load capacity to an unknown number, which may lead to you overloading them and causing further damage to the tires and trailer. A trailer tire...

  • What Should Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 Inflate to
The interesting thing about trailer tires is that they need to be inflated to their max psi rating at all times regardless of load. This ensures that heat does not build up which causes premature failure. So for a tire like the Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 that has a 90 psi max pressure rating you need to make sure you inflate it to 90 psi when cold at all times and you'll be set.

  • Can Tire Pressure be Lowered on Motorcycle Trailer to Provide a Better Ride
You always want to keep your trailer tires psi set to what is recommended. If the psi is higher or lower then the tire will not perform as the manufacturer states. For instance, the Kenda # AM30670 is rated for 990 lbs at 90 psi. If we were to deflate the tires at all then the 990 lbs capacity that Kenda says the tire can handle will not be the case anymore. Underinflated tires are more prone to overheating and tire failure as well. I strongly advise against lowering the psi.
