Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Ordered 3 wheel and tire assemblies to replace my old ones on my trailer, one for as spare. After more than 10 days and back ordered after i ordered them. I get them and they have the wrong valve stems installed. These are load C trailer tires 90 psi. The rubber valve stem that came in them are 60 psi. So now these wheel and tire assemblies cant be used and are now not DOT compliant. My old trailer tires im replacing have metal valve stem which are DOT compliant for 90 psi. After 2 phone calls and a hour waiting to talk to someone. They agreed about the valve stem concern. But no call back with a resolution to the problem as promised. I called back a third time today to the persons extension and it went to voice mail! E-trailer this is a fail!

Great customer service. It’s refreshing to follow the product I buy through the entire picking, packaging and shipping process. It arrived fast and in excellent condition and a follow up email ensuring I was taken care of just to top it all off. As long as etrailer does business this way, I’ll be a customer. Awesome job!

by:

Haven’t used the trailer yet but they should work great

by:

Very happy with all aspects of my order. Exactly what I needed by your directions on your website. The delivery time was fabulous. Ordered 3 trailer tires and rims on Friday and received them today Monday at noon. That is amazing considering nothing moves on Sunday’s. Again I say thank you and look forward doing business in the future.

by:

I needed tires for my 5 x 8 trailer because the old tires were cracking on the sides. I priced out several companies and one of the larger discount stores wanted nearly double. I got a better deal buying 2 tires with wheels than if I had gone to a tire shop for just tire replacement. I’m very happy with the price, service and shipping time using etrailer. Thanks much!!

Comments
These tires are still working great. I use this trailer frequently and am happy with my tires from etrailer. Will definitely order from them again for tires and other parts. Thx

Delivered quickly, Excellent quality, Guide post video helped with measurements. I followed the instructions and boat went on easy and straight. Also makes a happy wife who was nervous to trailer boat!
Wheels and brackets are of good quality. Thank You.

by:

I bought these wheels to replace the original wheels on my Honda jet ski trailer. They were delivered on time, ready to install. I had both of them on the trailer in about 30 minutes. I bought them because of the stainless steel rims as my old wheels were rusting. I had one question prior to buying, but eTrailer customer service answered it quickly. This is the 3rd time I’ve bought a product from eTrailer and all of them have been exactly what they were advertised to be. Good company to buy from. Fair pricing. Will definitely buy from eTrailer again.

by:

Tires arrived quickly in great condition (in a Box)! These tires replaced the original tires mounted on white painted "rusted" rims on my small trailer. They will last a lot longer because the rims are galvanized not painted. They also look great!

by:

I recently purchased this spare tire/wheel combo for my new continental trailer that carries my PWC.

It matched perfectly however the mounting bracket could include a filler plate for the smaller PWC trailers to mount.

I used a small piece of wood as filler and will replace with a metal bracket.

by:

Tires and wheels looked great, best combo price I found. Thanks

by:

I am more than happy with this purchase.
The
price was unbeatable.
I feel much safer and secure towing my boat on the freeway at high speeds for long distances with these tires and wheels.
Shipping was extremely fast, and communication was excellent.
I highly recommend these as an upgrade to any smaller trailer.

Ordered 2 spare wheel and tire combo for my new seadoo jetski trailer for peace of mind. Excellent service, fast delivery. I would definitely refer anyone to etrailer.com and I will definitely reorder any part I might need.
Thanks guys

Arrived quickly as as described. Wheel perfect as a spare and the mount will look great once installed.

by:

Great looking tires on galvanized rims, definitely would order again

After a full season in and out of salt water and over wintering, they still look as good as the day they were came out of the box.

Wheel and tire fit perfectly. Runs great down the road. One of my old tires was bouncing a lot (I could see it in my mirror) and the treads eventually wore out. No local tire store would balance a 12" trailer tire/wheel.

The guides and advice on this site take the stress out of ordering online.

Long term review will have to take place later :-)

Just great. Over a year of hauling household furniture and building materials through 500 mile round trips twice a month during all weather conditions...snow, sleet, rain, hot days and nights, put these tires to the test. Never leaked air, no rust in the galvanization, tread wear is even.

Blew out a tire a Saturday. Ordered two new ones on etrailer.com Sunday. They arrived with free shipping Thursday. Back on the road, the following Saturday. Fast, easy, affordable, and product as described. What more can you ask for! Thanks

YOU WERE VERY EASY TO DO BUSINESS WITH!!! I GOT EXACTLY WHAT I ORDERED AD IT WAS DELIVERED WHEN YOU PROMISED AT A FAIR PRICE

by:

Just what I ordered and needed a video you answered any questions I had about the ply of the tied came in 4 days excellent

by:

I ordered a set of rims, tires because it was actually cheaper then just tires. Back order until 3/23 so i found a suitable replacement the galvanized rim, tires. When i received them the quality was horrible worst looking rs ive ever seen. Whoever dips these or does the galvanizing process has no quality control. They attempted to find a better set to replace the junk i was sent. And they could not. Then they offered to replace it with another item they dont have in stock a suitable replacement. They could have offered just tires at a small discount but no. I will not be purchasing from e trailer again i will notount these rims on anything they look horrible.

by:

Bought the galvanized wheel for the same cost as what it would have been for painted wheel in the local store.

by:

Great service from time of order until receiving. Lots of good info on website also. I found answers to any questions I had.

by:

etrailer has been a great place for me to get trailer parts and tires. Their customer service is is Great. I will continue to do business with them!

by:

Nice group to work with, products were exactly as described. A huge plus, I called customer service and was NOT sent to an offshore call center. I can’t say how much I value speaking to someone here who not only I don’t have to work to be understood but also someone who is part of the actual business and takes care of things!

I had originally found a wheel/tire option on Amazon but elected to go with eTrailer b/c I was not comfortable with purchasing through a 3rd party merchant -- I have had trouble if any issue is encountered.

My wheels from eTrailer showed up in a sturdy box and were ready to mount. Very satisfied with overall purchase experience. The wheels are used for my small Yacht Club trailer that holds my 2006 SeaDoo GTX.

For the price, you can't go wrong. Some people have reviewed the wheels as being a bit scuffed (as in not immaculately polished). I kind of chuckled a bit when reading those. Folks - you are getting 2 wheels + tires shipped to your door for ~$100 all-in. That is an insane value. My wheels were also not perfectly polished...but I was 100% ok with that.

  • Is It Okay If Trailer Weighs Exactly 2,100 lbs When Loaded and it has Tire Capacity of 2,100
If you are absolutely certain that your trailer when loaded would not exceed 2,100 lbs then you wouldn't need to worry as you should be fine. I would strongly recommend you keep your tires inflated to their maximum psi though. If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower air pressure than the maximum, the amount of weight that the tire can carry will be reduced. If a heavier load is put on the trailer tire than what is recommended for that air pressure, the sidewall of the tire could heat...

  • What are Limitations When Upgrading to Larger Tires?
Should you want to upgrade the size of your wheels and tires you can, you'll only need to determine how much available space you have and pick a wheel and tire combination that will fit. You are also going to need wheels with the same bolt pattern; I've added a link to a help article that explains how to determine bolt pattern. I have also attached a link to each of our available wheels and tires for you to take a look at.

  • Troubleshooting Tire Wear Down Middle of Tread on Trailer
Generally speaking, a trailer tire will wear in the middle of the tread when it is over-inflated, however that does not appear to be the case with the tires on your trailer. With that being said, I do not recommend lowering the pressure on the tires to below the maximum psi recommended on the sidewall. Doing this will essentially lower the tire's load capacity to an unknown number, which may lead to you overloading them and causing further damage to the tires and trailer. A trailer tire...

  • Can Tire Pressure be Lowered on Motorcycle Trailer to Provide a Better Ride
You always want to keep your trailer tires psi set to what is recommended. If the psi is higher or lower then the tire will not perform as the manufacturer states. For instance, the Kenda # AM30670 is rated for 990 lbs at 90 psi. If we were to deflate the tires at all then the 990 lbs capacity that Kenda says the tire can handle will not be the case anymore. Underinflated tires are more prone to overheating and tire failure as well. I strongly advise against lowering the psi.

  • Correct Inflation Pressure for Trailer 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
Tire size 4.80-12 is not found on vehicles, but is a common trailer tire size on smaller utility- and sport-type trailers. In trailer use you do want to inflate them to the maximum cold psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall. Trailer tires should never be under- or over-inflated since they can deliver their rated weight-carrying capacity only when inflated to their specified pressure. Incorrect inflation can lead to excessive heat which is the main cause for tire failure. All of our tires...

No matter what trailer tire you are using, including the Kenda Loadstar # AM30670, you need to keep the cold psi rating to the what the manufacturer recommends. When you are over or under the recommended pressure then you can cause excessive heat build-up which results in a blowout. Even if it feels like the 990 lbs at 90 psi weight capacity seems like overkill for your trailer this is the best way to maintain your trailer tires. With trailer tires like # AM30670 you have to run the max tire pressure rating that's on the sidewall of the trailer. This ensures you get the full weight capacity of the tire and also that you prevent any heat build up which also leads to premature tire failure. Trailer suspension by nature is a bit bouncier than vehicle suspension since there isn't a shock there to dampen the movement of it.

The Kenda Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 that you referenced will work perfectly as a spare for your trailer. The important info you need when picking out a spare or replacement is the tire size, load range, and bolt pattern on the wheel so you can be sure it will fit your hub. Yes, since the pilot diameter of the trailer wheel part # AM30670 is larger than what you'd need and this has the correct bolt pattern it would work well for you. This wheel centers on the lug nuts which is why having a larger pilot diameter does not negatively affect anything.

The interesting thing about trailer tires is that they need to be inflated to their max psi rating at all times regardless of load. This ensures that heat does not build up which causes premature failure. So for a tire like the Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 that has a 90 psi max pressure rating you need to make sure you inflate it to 90 psi when cold at all times and you'll be set.
