Features to know about

Upgrade Old or Weak Trailer Brakes: Self-Adjusting 12" Assemblies for Reliable Stopping

Swapping out worn or dragging brakes can make a night-and-day difference in how your trailer tows. These TruRyde 12" x 2" electric drum brakes are built for standard hub-and-drum setups and rated for axles up to 7,000 lbs. The self-adjusting design keeps braking performance consistent over time, so you don’t have to crawl under the trailer for manual tweaks. They deliver smooth, even braking for better control and less wear on your drums.

Stay in Control Without Extra Maintenance: Automatic Self-Adjusting Mechanism

Once installed, these brakes take care of themselves. A built-in tensioning cable automatically keeps the pads aligned as they wear, so you always have peak stopping power. Unlike typical electric brakes that need routine adjustments, these maintain optimal shoe-to-drum contact every time you tow. That means easier ownership and consistent performance mile after mile.

Durable Build That Lasts: E-Coated Backing Plates and Automotive-Grade Pads

The e-coated backing plates fend off rust and road grime, while automotive-grade brake pads are fully bonded to the shoes for solid, even friction. The SAE-certified pads deliver high braking torque and resist cracking during hard use. Tapered edges help reduce chatter and lockup, giving you smoother stops and longer pad life.

Simple Bolt-On Fit: Ready to Work with Standard 5-Bolt Flanges

These assemblies mount directly to most standard hub-and-drum units from brands like Dexter and Lippert. Each kit includes both left-hand (driver’s side) and right-hand (passenger’s side) brake assemblies. With the correct 5-bolt flange pattern and fit for 14-1/2", 15", 16", and 16-1/2" wheels, installation is straightforward—just add mounting hardware and a compatible electric brake controller.

Built for Confidence on Every Tow: Tested Magnets and Quality Certification

Each magnet is tested for proper pull force and conductivity to ensure reliable braking response. The assemblies carry SAE certification for quality you can trust on the road. With durable parts and proven performance, these TruRyde electric trailer brakes keep your setup stopping straight and smooth wherever you haul.

The pair of these brake setups were just what I needed. I have a 10k dual axle enclosed car hauler with about 8k miles on it. The brakes seemed to have basically come apart with the adjusters falling out. These were direct bolt on replacements. Very good price and a very quick install, just 5 nuts and 2 wires to deal with per wheel. I did all 4 wheels with no issues. I did go ahed and regrease the wheels so that added a little time, but definitely a good idea. Worked perfectly and seem like they'll last. Looking forward to putting some miles on these.

by:

I purchased these brakes per etrailer recommendation for my 5th wheel. They were received correctly and installed correctly. They were tested electrically and mechanically adjusted correctly. The brakes had very little stopping power. I did several stop and go so called auto adjust procedures and still little or no stopping power. I contacted etrailer. The rep asked me to check them again for proper electrical function, I did, check them for proper mechanical adjustment, they were properly adjusted. After several conversations with the rep. I gave up. While in florida, I had a near miss with these as they would not stop still. I continued my email messaging with the rep. Still no correction. These brakes are junk and etrailer did not offer a resolution. I suppose they will answer to a lawyer after an accident.

by:

The electric brakes came fully assembled. I just installed each assembly to the RV with four bolts, then hooked up two wires. It was quick and easy.

Fast delivery.

Great brakes much better than the knock off ones on Amazon.

Booyah! Happy to hear that ;)

by:

The brake assemblies were well built. They fit exactly like they should and all parts were with them. They are already installed on my trailer axles as there were no complications. I don't have pictures because i just didn't think of it but take my word for it, they looked great!

by:

Replacing the brakes on your camper using this product is the easiest way to upgrade the non-adjustable brake assembly that is typical on most campers. Be aware that you'll have to apply the brakes quite a few times to allow the self adjusters to adjust the brakes. Don't forget to purchase new grease seals which you will have to replace if you decide to clean and repack the wheel bearings.

We have traveled numerous trips through the North East as well as a trip to St. Louis since last spring. We just had the camper in for service and the brakes are in great condition.

by:

The brakes are still doing good. In the next few weeks I'll be pulling the wheels for a brake/bearing inspection. I sometimes test just the trailer brakes while going slow down the highway and you can tell they are working.

by:

They are working great. Thanks for your assistance. The only thing that I found was a problem was how much I had to adjust them when I first put them on. Adjust. Adjust. Adjust. Adjust. At first I thought the brakes were bad. I have put trailer brakes on several other times and yes you do need to adjust them at first but not that much. They are working as they should. I do recommend them.

by:

Product arrived quickly. Packaged well and was exactly as described. Will definitely be a repeat customer.

by:

All installed and fit perfectly.

by:

Went on easily. Work great.

by:

One of the pads on one one of the left side assemblies was damaged. I called and spoke to Callie she said she would handle when I get to me destination nation.

by:

These brakes installed simply by 5 bolts and measure the width for perfect brake adjustment. Easy installation and followed the instructions to the Tee.

by:

I ordered this kit with a drum and the drum beat these shoes up pretty bad in shipping. I will have to partially disassemble, make adjustments, and reassemble before installation and the wiring on one of the brakes looks bad enough I will have to try to replace. The product might be ok, but the shipping was extremely poor--they don't even come boxed individually, just thrwon in a much larger box with other parts.

by:

So far so good. Be sure to burnish the pads, very important for brakes to work correctly.

by:

The part was correct and worked perfectly as it should great place to buy parts for campers was easy and the price was good

by:

I would never buy this again. Right out of the box, 2 large chunks were bashed out of the shoe pad, the self-adjusting spin rod was so loose that it fell out of the spring, and the shoe spring adjusters were not correctly positioned. I fixed what I could and attached without any other choices. It self adjusted too far and wouldn't release. It had enough brake dust in 1 day for a life of a brake. Absolute garbage!

by:

Fast free shipping,

by:

Great product and easy installation. Self-adjusting is a game changer.

by:

Product looks good but shipping apparently was a rough ride, 2 of the 4 brake assembly’s were almost completely disassembled and locking pins for the brakes bent. Had to steal parts off my old brakes to put them back together. Whole point of a brake kit is to save time and just throw them on but unfortunately it cost me a lot of time to put them back together and hope they work correctly once I’m done.

by:

Seem to be of good quality. Wire leads were much shorter then the Dexter OEM ones I replaced, so I had to add some extensions to the trailer wiring.

by:

Even though Airstream no longer sourced replacement brake parts for my 2003 Airstream trailer, eTrailer had exact replacement brakes, drum/hubs, bearings and seals. Installation of the new parts was easy and quick.

by:

After a year, I'm super happy with the new brake kits from etrailer. They came quickly, fit perfectly, and were easy to install. A year later the performance has been everything I would have expected. I will buy again from etrailer.

Parts working great a year and a few thousand miles later

by:

Great price and paired perfectly with the TruRyde hubs since they set the adjusters to be spaced very close in diameter to their hub assemblies. Adjuster wheel was very easy to access to do the initial adjustment by hand with just a flathead screwdriver. Plenty of wire coming out of the backing plate as well to connect to your existing wiring.

Thank you for reaching out! It looks like your Dexter Axle uses the 5 Spoke Utility Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-174-5UC3 so to replace that and your brakes you need the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K as well as the 12" Self-Adjusting Electric Brakes # TRU96FR. These will be exact fits for your system but the hub and drum kit comes with a slightly larger grease seal so you need the Replacement Grease Seal Set # RG06-090 for each axle on your trailer. Hey Brian, welcome back! Brake mounting hardware is not included with the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes # AKEBRK-6. • What Would Cause Left Side Brake Assembly To Seize Up After Plugging In To Tow Vehicle?
Hello Ed, thanks for reaching out. The brakes should not be engaging unless you are plugged into the tow vehicle and the manual override/brake pedal is pressed. If the brakes are locking up as soon as you plug in, this means there is either a wiring issue which is bringing 12v power to the brakes when it shouldn't, or there is a mechanical issue with the brakes. I would try plugging in the trailer and testing your brake wires on the left side. There should be no power going to the brakes...
