Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

How to Manually Adjust Trailer Brakes

The more miles you put on your trailer, the more your brake pads will wear down. As they lose contact with the drum, stopping distances get longer and longer. To keep your brakes working great, it's important to adjust them pretty routinely. For this job, grab a floor jack and either a brake adjustment tool (sold separately) or just a standard flathead screwdriver.

Jack up your trailer enough to get the wheel(s) off the ground. Remove the adjuster plugs from the backing plate on the brake, and insert the flat end of the tool through the back of the assembly.

Screenshot from an instruction video shows how to manually adjust the the alignment on a drum brake

Push in on the star gear and lift it up. Keep doing this until the brake pads catch on your drum. When you can't spin your wheel by hand anymore, back the gear off by about 10 clicks by pushing down on the star gear. Does the wheel now spin freely (even if it sounds like the brake pads drag slightly on the drum)? Great! Then you're all done with that one and ready to adjust the rest.

How to Break In New Brakes

After you get these brakes installed and adjusted, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

Brake assembly arrived quickly and was exactly as describe. It was easy to install and with Lauren's help with mounting dimensions it bolted to my 48 year old trailer perfect

by:

Well made heavy duty brakes but need to include new nuts, bolts, and lock washers

by:

Brake assembly was loose and only wrapped with brown paper and not in a box by themselves. The larger box allowed them to bang up against the sides whenever they were moved. They were also very dirty as if they sat in a warehouse for several years. Two of the Assemblies were very scratched on the back. Overall very poor boxing. I am also upset having to pay $XX to return the wrong orginal Assemblies that were suggested to be the correct Assemblies .

Of course we wan the brakes to get to you undamaged. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

by:

Arrived as expected and an exact fit. For a 4-bolt 12" pattern. The only thing missing to make this a complete kit is replacement studs and nuts. I punched out and reused me old ones.

Only place I found brakes for my 1972 Shuster trailer

by:

Good products, scratched upon delivery, ( UPS poor package handling) but had a couple issues with original order. I ordered based on information posted on etrailer.com and ended up with brakes and hubs that didnt fit axles. I returned original brakes and hubs, and awaiting refund. It looks as though I will be responsible for XXX.00 shipping charge for returned parts even though I ordered based on info posted on Etrailer website. A tip for ordering parts for Timbren axles.... check timbren website for accurate part numbers. etrailer has a lot of good info on website, but not all 100% accurate. Possibly a very costly mistake on my part.

You mentioned that you had ordered the hubs and brakes off of information on our site. I wanted to see if you could explain in more detail where the information was located?

I found it in the Q and A section. One of your reps answered the same question I had, for another customer. It had a active link for the parts I ordered. I was hesitant on ordering parts because I wanted to make sure I recieved matching axles and brake assembly. This help section was the deciding factor for ordering from etrailer.

Received two left hand brakes. Customer service was super and corrected the problem

by:

I replaced all ( 4 ) brake assemblies , they work great and were easy to put on. I also repacked the bearings and placed new seals. Everything still working good, thanks etrailer.

by:

You all there really need to get your act together!!!! I run a Mobile RV Repair business and have a dealer account with you. You sent me 4 right hand brake assemblies!!! Really folks??? I was on an emergency call to get these done and this is what you did to me? It was a 2 hour commute to there and back and now these folks need to stay longer at the campsite, I need to go back there again and the cost of gas, pay my tech $40/hr again to get the left side done. Much money lost because of your incompetence! Very upset with etrailer as this is not the first time with me that you all screwed up!! Get your act together!

by:

by:

by:

the brakes will fit...but the left brake suffered damage. my neighbor is a mechanic. i;m not. we straightened and reassembled it. he thinks it will work. I was glad to get them.

by:

Working flawless as advertised, the experience of finding the right parts to receiving them a few days later and most of all the piece of mind that my trailer is going to do what I ask, makes buying from e-trailer the way to go.

by:

Great product, saves a ton of time replacing entire backing plate with all components pre assembled.

by:

We used this product to upgrade an older trailer. It has performed just as we had hoped. Install was easy.

by:

Perfect fit. Took less than 30 minutes to install for both wheels. I have more problems with Tinker Toys than I did installing these brakes.
