Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

The 26” on center leaf springs that I just purchased were delivered quickly and worked perfectly on my trailer. The only issue was that I ordered 3” shackle bolts (my fault) but really needed 3 1/2” so I returned them to etrailer. The return process was very easy, they sent me a RMA # and the shipping label my email, and I just dropped it off at the UPS store. Great doing business with etrailer!!!!!

Products have been performing extremely well. Traveled to Lake Erie numerous times after the repair, extremely satisfied!!!!!!!!

Product was great, and the service was excellent. I initially ordered the wrong length (my fault, not etrailer) and the team worked with me both via email and on the phone to get the right part. They also recommended the right hardware kit for the tandem axles.

Two day free shipping on something like this is unbelievable, thank you! I will definitely continue to shop with etrailer.

They have worked flawlessly. I’m still completely satisfied.

by:

Etrailer did good, UPS damaged box but leaf springs are not damaged

by:

Perfect fit and replacement for stock springs. Paired these with the CRE-3000 and heavy duty shackles.

by:

Great replacement leaf springs for my travel trailer.
Delivered in torn up box, luckily there was no damage.

by:

Big difference. Good price & quick delivery. I added some before and after pictures of the leaf springs under our travel trailer.

by:

The new leaf springs came in quickly, were easy to install and are keeping their shape the way that they should. The RV manufacturer put cheap springs on the trailer and in only 2 years they were flat and unsafe, which is something being reported by a great number of people who have trailers from the same company, and they are breaking causing damage to the trailer and could potently get someone hurt or killed. I am thankful for the people at etrailer.com, because they helped me find the correct springs and got them to me quickly so I could replace them before leaving on a one-month trip.

Thank You!

They perform very well!

by:

Appear to be excellent quality. Much better than the 20 year old springs they replaced. Had to do a lot of measuring as this was a custom made trailer from a local welder but everything from etrailer has fit well. Definitely sits a bit higher with new springs but that’s fine with me.

by:

We bought one of these about a year and half ago. No issues so far so we bought another two, one to install, another as a backup in case the last factory leaf spring breaks.

Our factory leaf springs were rated at 1750 lbs, these are rated at 2000 lbs. Apparently the 1750 lbs are no longer available, but we.found these 2000 lbs. to work fine for our application. Glad glad we bought them.

by:

my 1st order was wrong. but the tec support is great at etrailer

by:

I ordered the wrong leaf springs on the recommendation of a local RV tech. When I realized about an hour later and found the right ones, I called to change the order, but was told it was “too far into the process” to cancel the original order. The order hadn’t been totally finalized and hadn’t actually been shipped yet, but all they offered was to send a return label if I wanted to pay for return shipping, which I did. I opted to order the replacement springs through a different company due to etrailer’s customer service response.

by:

Excellent product from an excellent company. Easy to deal with and fast shipping!

I am so sorry to hear that you are missing parts of your order! I will have our customer service team reach out to you about this.

by:

These springs offer just enough load capacity to help with the weak springs found on many trailers equipped with 3500LB axles. They also offer an increased ride height of about 1-1 1/2 inches.

by:

Leaf springs looks good haven’t install them because I bought a pair to have on hand just in case .

by:

This is the second set of springs purchased to replace the stock 3500 LB. springs on two different trailers. These springs are what is needed to provide a better ride, and to eliminate the occasional "Bottoming out" of the axle to the frame without comprimising the weight limit of the axle.

by:

These leaf springs did the job! My trailer is in great shape now. Thanks!!!

by:

Perfect fit

by:

No complaints and installation was fairly straightforward. It fit fairly easily, and have had no issues since the installation approximataley year ago. The representative who took my order was patient and explained things; therefore gave me the confidence to do it myself. Thank you!

by:

Service is great. Delivery time is great. Quality of merchandise looks good.

by:

Great job! We received it first this this morning.

by:

Very Helpful when I called to order! I really appreciate his advice and kindness!

  • How to Choose Correct Replacement Leaf Springs and Equalizers for a 2021 Coachmen 259FKDS
The determine the correct replacement leaf spring on your 2021 Coachmen 259FKDS you'll need to lift your trailer frame so the spring is hanging freely and then measure from center-eye to center-eye, then for the equalizer you need to measure center-eye to center-eye for the horizontal bolts and then from the center of the top eye to the centerline of the horizontal eyes. Be sure to also note your axle weight rating as well. I'm attaching dimensional photos from the Leaf Spring #e22YR...

  • How to Determine Correct 4,000 lb Trailer Leaf Springs
I can help you determine the right replacement double-eye leaf springs for your Keystone Hideout, though we don't have any way of knowing what specific ones you need. It's pretty easy though, as all you need to do is measure your current leaf springs from center-to-center of the spring eyes. Leaf springs also flatten a bit over time, so you should go with ones that measure a bit shorter than what you currently have. For example, if your current leaf springs measure 26-1/4" center eye to...

I can certainly point you in the right direction. Unfortunately we do not have access to Dexter's serial number database, and I cannot recommend springs based off of axle specs. If only it were so easy right? The best way to go about replacing leaf springs is to have you measure the overall length of the spring. Leaf springs are measured from center eye to center eye straight across. It is preferred if you jack up the trailer and measure the spring while not under a load. A very common...

Good question, and what happens is that leaf springs elongate over time, and since you mentioned you got measurements of 25-1/2 inches from center eye to center eye and 26 inches under partial load, the best option for leaf springs really is the 25-1/4 inch spring: - 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e57SR If you go with the longer spring, it won't allow for much travel or rebound, and the ride would be exceptionally stiff.

  • Will 4,000lb Rated Leaf Springs Work Replace 3,500lb Springs If They Both Have The Same Length
Hey Todd, The 500lb increase in capacity to the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e22YR will definitely work and would probably give you a bit sturdier of a ride because the springs won't compress as easily. Going too stiff can cause problems though so I'd definitely stay around the 3,500 to 4,000lb capacity when swapping them out.

Since you have a 3,500 lbs axle, I recommend the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles item # e22YR. These are for 4,000 lbs axles which will still work great with your Gulf Stream trailer. As far as your 26" measurement goes. If this was taken with both sides of your trailer on the ground you'll want to jack up one side and remeasure the lifted side. The springs tend to stretch out over time and this will give you the most accurate measurement to go off of. If your 26"...

Hello Mark. Based on what I could find online, the Dexter 072-042-00 is a standard 1-3/4 inch wide double eye spring which is 25-1/4 inches long and rated for 1,750 lbs. To replace these, I recommend you use the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e57SR. This is a 2,000 lb rated 1-3/4" wide double eye spring that measures 25-1/4" long overall. So this will be a direct bolt-on replacement for your Dexter springs and it has the 2,000 lb rating you are looking for.

  • Correct Replacement for 26-1/2 Long Leaf Spring
It's not uncommon for new trailer leaf springs to measure shorter than the old leaf springs they are replacing. The reason for this is that leaf springs stretch as they age. Therefore, I do think the 26" long leaf spring options we offer will work for you. In order to find the right one you just need to find your axle capacity; part # e77SR for 2,000 lb, part # e22YR for 4,000 lb, or part # e94SR for 6,000 lb. For new u-bolts, we have the 2" Square Trailer U-Bolt part # SP01-160.
