Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • Can 2.2K Heavier Rated Leaf Springs be Used on a 2022 Grand Design Imagine BHE Trailer
Hey Steve, thanks for reaching out! According to my research your 2022 Grand Design Imagine BHE has a GVWR just shy of 7,000 lbs so increasing the leaf spring weight rating by 2.2K will result in a pretty noticeable stiffness and I don't recommend going that route. It's okay to have leaf springs that are rated a little higher, but 2.2K is pretty significant for this weight of trailer. If you can let me know what the length of your leaf springs are when they don't have weight on them (lift...

  • Can Slipper Springs be Used to Replace Double Eye Trailer Leaf Springs
Hey Allen, good to hear from you! You can swap to the 30" Slipper Spring # e89SR, but it will require you to get a whole new hanger kit installed on your trailer which means cutting the old ones off and having new ones welded on by a professional. A much better option to beef up your suspension would be to install the 4K Double Eye Leaf Spring # e22YR because you'll continue to use the rest of your current components.

The determine the correct replacement leaf spring on your 2021 Coachmen 259FKDS you'll need to lift your trailer frame so the spring is hanging freely and then measure from center-eye to center-eye, then for the equalizer you need to measure center-eye to center-eye for the horizontal bolts and then from the center of the top eye to the centerline of the horizontal eyes. Be sure to also note your axle weight rating as well. I'm attaching dimensional photos from the Leaf Spring #e22YR...

  • Can A 25-1/4" Leaf Spring Be Replaced With A 26" Leaf Spring?
Hello Mark, thanks for reaching out. When replacing leaf springs, it is important the new springs are identical in length to the old ones. There is a small amount of tolerance, like 1/2" or less, but any more than this can throw the suspension off center like you are describing. It sounds like the 2" springs are just too long for your trailer and will need to be replaced. I see that you ordered the # e22YR springs which are for a 4,000 lb axle. We do offer a 25-1/4" spring for a 4,000...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For A 2020 Freedom Express SE Travel Trailer
Hey Matt, The GVWR of your trailer is 7,500lbs so it's more likely that you have 3,500lb axles. To closest option to this would be the etrailer 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e22YR. I would definitely take a look at the axle tubes to find the axle tag sticker and confirm the weight capacity before purchasing a new set of leaf springs. If the axle tags are gone or painted over then you can measure the diameter of the axle tube with a caliper # PTW80157...

  • Replacement 26 Inch Long Double Eye Leaf Spring for Travel Trailer
The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles # e22YR looks to be exactly what you need. This measures 26" from center eye to center eye and is 1-3/4" wide. This is rated for 2,000 lbs so when you replace both springs together they are rated for 4,000 lbs (check to make sure this is rated high enough for your axle specs). Be sure to replace the leaf spring on both sides of the same axle to ensure that you have a consistent ride quality.

  • Replacement Leaf Spring for Wells Cargo T8520T2-D
Hey Rick, he leaf spring part # e22YR that you tried can replace all of the springs you have now without having to change anything so this would work great. As a leaf spring breaks in and eventually wears out it stretches as it gets flatter which is why a shorter new spring is what you end up needing when it's time for replacement.

Seth, with that length there aren't going to be any options that we have unfortunately. The closest springs we carry to your 24" are all slipper springs like the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Radius End for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles # e69SR.

Hello Ken, thanks for reaching out. We do carry some 26" long double eye leaf springs. For example, the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e22YR is a 1-3/4" wide 2,000 lb spring that may work for you. As far as the other suspension parts, I will need more info to make sure you get the right parts. If you want to replace all the bolts and shackles I would need to know the length of the current shackles measured center hole to center hole. Same for the equalizer. I would need the hole to hole measurements...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For A Tandem Axle Trailer With Flattened Leaf Springs
Hey John, You definitely weren't lying about those springs being flattened out. With them being flattened out they are going to be a bit wider so you will need a shorter eye-to-eye measurement than 26-1/4". My only concern is that the # e54SR at 25-1/8" is going to be a bit too short and have your shackle straps sit out too far, which will eventually lead to a bind up. If this was a trailer we had in the shop I'd pull a few sizes and see what worked the best. Since we don't have that...

  • Can 4k Axle Trailer Leaf Springs be Installed on 2019 Jayco Jayflight 267BHSW
Hey James, you can go with a 4k axle leaf spring like the part # e22YR in place of what you have now while it has a slightly higher weight capacity it's not enough that it would create a harsh ride quality. This is a 26 inch long spring though so you should verify that is length you have. If you have something different let me know below.

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for 2022 Sun Lite 16BH With Dexter Axle
Hi Jason; do you know the capacity of your Dexter axle? More arch for height isn't really a thing, and I wouldn't get longer shackles since that would throw off suspension geometry and be uneven since the front hanger stays the same. It is acceptable to move to a higher capacity spring so that is the best option here. If you have a 3,500 lb axle (based on specs you probably do) the # e22YR you looked at would last longer with a capacity of 4,000 lbs. This also isn't such a large increase...

Hey Dan! I don't have an exact reason for the measurement restrictions on one vs. the other. It is what MORryde has found works based on the designs. Regardless, the best replacement for an EQ310 like yours is the MORryde ALLTREK 4000 # MR89DR. That particular equalizer isn't as common and has that extra height to it. The ALLTREK 4000 is the closest match (which is the most important factor) and will keep your suspension geometry the same. While you're at it, I also recommend adding the...

I can help you determine the right replacement double-eye leaf springs for your Keystone Hideout, though we don't have any way of knowing what specific ones you need. It's pretty easy though, as all you need to do is measure your current leaf springs from center-to-center of the spring eyes. Leaf springs also flatten a bit over time, so you should go with ones that measure a bit shorter than what you currently have. I can certainly point you in the right direction. Unfortunately we do not have access to Dexter's serial number database, and I cannot recommend springs based off of axle specs. If only it were so easy right? The best way to go about replacing leaf springs is to have you measure the overall length of the spring. Since you have a 3,500 lbs axle, I recommend the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles item # e22YR. These are for 4,000 lbs axles which will still work great with your Gulf Stream trailer. As far as your 26" measurement goes. If this was taken with both sides of your trailer on the ground you'll want to jack up one side and remeasure the lifted side. The springs tend to stretch out over time and this will give you the most accurate measurement to go off of. If your 26"...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for Camper Trailer With 3,500 Pound Axle
You definitely do not want to use the # e77SR on your trailer with a 3,500 lb axle. These are rated for a 2,000 lb axle which is well under your capacity. If you need a 26" leaf spring I would not get the # e54SR since they're a bit too short. You're better off getting the # e22YR. This is rated slightly higher at 4,000 lbs but that won't be an issue for the trailer and will likely allow them to last a bit longer. These measure 26" which is what you were looking for.
