Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • 3,500 lb Rear Axle is Hitting Car Trailer Frame Are New Leaf Springs Needed
Hey Henry, Really appreciate the photos as that made it easy to see what the situation was, and yeah, that's definitely an issue as the axle should not be hitting the frame like that. New leaf springs are a good idea as yours seem a bit long in the tooth (so to speak), but I'd also get an over/under conversion kit. The kit will move your leaf springs to the top of your axle, creating more space from the frame. I assume since you mentioned a 7,000 lb trailer that you have 3,500 lb axles,...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs and Shackles for 2014 Evergreen Amped 28FS Toy Hauler
MORryde does have a suspension upgrade kit that I highly recommend. It comes with 1/2" thick shackles, along with wet bolts and bronze bushings. You will want to choose a kit based on the length of your current shackles. For 2-1/4" you need the # MR46ZR and for 3-1/8" the # MR76ZR. For replacement leaf springs you will need to know your axle capacity along with your spring eye to spring eye measurement. Your current leaf springs will be slightly elongated since they flatten over time so...

  • Determining The Correct Replacement Leaf Springs For A 2021 Keystone Passport Grand Touring TT
You could potentially replace your leaf springs with a larger capacity spring but will need to match the length of your current leaf springs to avoid having to remove and reinstall the hangers and rest of the suspension system, which is a giant hassle and a lot more costly than just replacing the springs. If you have double-eye leaf springs you'll need to measure from the center of one eyelet to the center of the other. If you have slipper springs then you'll need to measure from the...

  • What Weight Capacity Leaf Springs Are Needed For a 2017 Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf 26DBH?
Looking up the information for your 2017 Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf 26DBH I see it has a GVWR of 7,725lbs with a 725lb tongue weight which means you likely have tandem 3,500lb axles. You should find this information on the front drivers corner of your camper on the information tag. We currently have 23-1/8" # e59SR and 27" # e97SR leaf springs with the capacity for 3,500lb axles. These lengths are from the bolt hole center to bolt hole center on the leaf springs when the springs are...

If you don't know your axle capacity, try checking the axle tag to see if it is listed. For your leaf spring measurement, we are measuring from spring eye to spring eye. For the shackles measure center hole to center hole. For example, if you have a 3,500 lb axle with a 27" leaf spring measurement you...

The axle capacity can typically be found on the axle tag. For the leaf spring length you need the spring eye to spring eye measurement. See the attached picture, this is measurement A. We have them in a 23-1/8" # e59SR, 25-1/8" # e68SR or 27" # e97SR length. You will want to select the spring length slightly larger than your mounting bolt pattern. There isn't an exact angle to go off of when it it comes to shackle straps, but we try to them to sit in a 'W' shape to allow for the suspension to travel without binding up. Depending on the length of the shackle straps the angle can vary a bit so it's a bit of a guessing game to get it perfect. If you're replacing your shackle straps, equalizers, or leaf springs you'll want to make sure that you properly measure each component and get matching sizes to avoid any issues with the suspension...

  • Is There Advantage to 3 Leaf or 4 Leaf Trailer Suspension Leaf Spring
In general the differences aren't huge, but some people prefer spring packs with greater amounts of leaves as that in the unlikely event one of them break there are several others to back it up. But the thinner the leaves (to create a multi-leaf spring pack) the more likely one would be to break. The other thing to consider is that a thicker spring pack would raise the trailer up a bit if the spring was mounted above the axle. The most common spring sizes we offer for 3,500 lb axles are...

  • Solution for 28 Inch Long Replacement Leaf Spring
Depending on how you measured, you may be able to use the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e97SR. This leaf spring is 27" long and is designed for 3,500 lb axles. You also want to match up your leaf spring capacity to your current axle capacity. Assuming your leaf springs are worn out they will be elongated. If you didn't account for this, then the 27" measurement is probably more accurate. If the # e97SR was worn out and flat it would measure 28" eye to eye.

Andy, while I do like your Axle # e95SR and U-Bolt Kit # CE23002 selection of which you will need 2 of each I do have another recommendation for the suspension kit. The Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT3 you found has longer equalizers designed for a 35" spacing used on larger axles. Our general rule of thumb is that the hanger spacing should be 1/4" -1/2" less than the length of the leaf spring. There is a small amount of tolerance,(1/2" or less) but not much. I do not recommend using a 25-1/4" long leaf spring with a 26" hanger spacing. We have a leaf spring # e97SR which is 27" long. This will be your best bet for a 3.5K double eye spring.
