Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

I was camping about 200 miles from home. It was our last day there and we were loading up. I noticed that the right-side front wheel was closer to the back wheel than it should have been. I crawled under the trailer and noticed a broken spring. The right side of the front axle shifted backwards about 4 inches and closed the gap between the front and rear axle. The original spring was no doubt cheap foreign steel. I ordered the above leaf spring from etrailer and of course cheap foreign steel, but this is the world we live in. I took a chance ordering it because my original equipment was 4 leaf's. All the other dimensions were very close. It actually worked out great. I only needed 1 but I bought 4 because I didn't want to do a half assed job. It is not a job for someone with minimum mechanical skills (you can really hurt yourself).

It is nice to know that if you need parts for your 2013 trailer, etrailer might just have it. For that

I bought a pair of springs for my 5th wheel trailer as preventive maintenance. In 500 miles of travel they had flattened out. I order a new set from etrailer and changed them. I've had no issues with these springs from etrailer in the 10000 miles we've traveled since installation.

by:

I ordered trailer leaf springs for my 2022 Keystone cougar and the items came in very quickly, and I was very pleased with the email updates that I got. It was very easy to click on a link and determine where my items were in transit. I also ordered a new bushings for those leaf springs and they came in at the same time without any issue.

On installation of the leaf springs and the brass bushings, the items fit perfectly.

The only thing I would suggest is better packaging as one end of a leaf spring broke through the cardboard box. The leaf springs are quite heavy, so they should’ve been packaged a little bit better. There was no damage to the items though.

by:

Replaced my stock 3500# springs after 2 of the 4 broke on the way home from a camping trip.

by:

After 1 year the spring is still doing fine. the size fit just right.

I broke a leaf spring on my trailer for the second time while hauling my Jeep coming south out of Flagstaff. I replaced all the springs with this product from etrailer and also added the MORride upgrade. The result has been very excellent. Quieter, Smoother towing experience....I highly recommend this product.

All parts arrived in a timely manner, and as ordered. Upon installation I found that they were of good quality and easily installed. I am quite happy with my purchase.

by:

Very good product. Fit and worked exactly as I hoped it would. Its hard to give a any product like this five stars without having run it for a couple years to see just how durable it really is.

by:

Shipped fast. Fit perfectly. Seems to be better quality than what I was replacing. Would buy again.

by:

U-bolts seem to be good quality. Would purchase again.

by:

The springs were just what the doctor ordered. Installation was a snap. Very pleased.

by:

I was totally in shock they were exactly the springs that I needed for my pontoon boat trailer I couldn't be happier with the service that I received from e-trailer and I would definitely recommend them to someone else

by:

Got my package today, it was on time. Haven’t opened it up yet but as I went to pick it up seems like they just threw the package. There’s a big hole on the corner of the package when delivered and the leaf springs were sticking out. I’m sure no one stole anything from it as the U-bolts and hardware came in a different box next to it intact. But as for the leaf spring box, seems as if just thrown down and the leaf springs sticking out from it being dropped. I didn’t open it, I just picked it up from the delivery area.

My review of the actual product I ordered, 6K springs is one part. They are as advertised. Correct measurements, no surprises. The really impressive part is the service provided by etrailer. I placed the order on a Friday, early evening. It was on the road by Saturday early morning, and to my door Tuesday. This was the standard, free shipping mind you. Plus, I got updates on every step of the process, from the moment the order was received, until it was at my door. Top notch service. Strongly recommend doing business with them for any of your trailer needs.

  • Recommended Shackle Straps and Hangers for a Single Axle Trailer
I would be happy to help but first you will want to take some measurements of the hangers and shackle straps you currently have to determine which ones you'll need. Longer or shorter on the shackle straps and hangers will change the ride height of your trailer. The Dexter Heavy Duty Suspension Upgrade Kit for Single Axle Trailers item # K71-358-00 would work great with the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring item # e34SR you're purchasing. The included shackle straps have a length from center of...

  • How to Select Replacement Leaf Springs for 5th Wheel Trailer
It does sound like you have found some clear damage to your 5th wheel trailer's leaf springs that will require attention. Uneven tire wear can be caused by a number of things - incorrect pressure, inadequate weight on the axle or a visibly damaged component like a leaf spring that has allowed the suspension geometry to change. It sounds like the broken driver-side spring is letting the axle hang too low on that side, which brings the tire's outside edge into more contact with the road...

For a new hub/drum that will work great with your current axles you'd want the part # 8-201-5UC3-EZ and then for brake assemblies you'd want the # AKEBRK-7-SA which are self-adjusting. To wire up the brakes you'd need 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 which we sell by the foot. Then leaf springs the part # e34SR would work really well too. Then for a U-bolt kit you'd want the part # APUBR-8. For new shackles I'd need you to get me the length of the ones you have now though. Measured from...

  • Dexter EZ Flex Equalizers for 6,000 Pound Axles on a 2006 Heartland Bighorn 5th Wheel
The length is good on the EZ Flex system # K71-653-00 but the height may be different depending on where you are measuring that 4-3/4 inches. On the EZ Flex the distance from the center of the mounting hole to the center line between the 2 bottom holes, straight up and down, is 2-7/8 inches. If your 4-3/4 inch measurement is diagonal then you will be good to go with this kit. For a u-bolt kit you can use # APUBR-9. The shocks might actually feel more effective with the EZ Flex kit installed....

  • Rebuilding a Tandem Axle Trailer with 6,000 Lb - 7,200 Lb Axles
I would love to help but are you sure that you have space to lower the trailer 4" - 6"? You will need at least 3" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender in order to allow for proper suspension travel. It looks like the fenders on the trailer now will not allow for this therefore I would you to do some measuring before any of the new parts are purchased. I would also need more info on the trailer such as axle capacity (see center label), leaf spring length (eye to eye), leaf...

  • Recommended Replacement Leaf Springs For Fifth Wheel Trailer
You do want to measure the springs with the weight off of them because they will flatten out with the weight added. Over time, springs can flatten a bit and that is why you are getting the 26 inch measurement. Based on the measurements you provided, I recommend going with part # e34SR. This is a 5-leaf spring and is designed for 6,000-lb axles. You also want to check the rest of your suspension to make sure everything is in good working order.

  • Choosing the Correct Replacement Leaf Springs for a Weekend Warrior Toy Hauler
In order to choose the correct replacement leaf springs for a trailer you'll need to know both the unloaded length and axle capacity. The number of springs is not relevant so long as you choose a set that matches the axle capacity as springs can have different thicknesses therefore different weight capacities not necessarily dependent on the number of leaves. A few other things to keep in mind is that leaf springs can lengthen over time and you need to replace them in pairs. I have attached...

  • What is the Minimum Space Between Tires on a Tandem Axle Trailer
I checked with Dexter, manufacturer of many trailer parts, and according to them there should be at least 1 inch of space between the tires when under load. So once your trailer is loaded and ready to tow, if you have more than 1 inch of space between the tires then going to the larger size would work. You also have to consider the additional width of the larger tire and the additional height. the new larger size will be 3.2 inches taller and 1.25 inches wider than your existing tire size....

If you are measuring your current leaf springs and are getting 26 inches from the center of the spring eye to the center of the spring eye and they are older springs it makes sense that they were originally about an inch less than that because springs will flatten out over time. Hey Cody, The amount of leafs in the spring isn't as big as factor as you'd think. The more leafs the softer the progression will be when the spring is compressing. The 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e34SR will be a good replacement for your 2021 Grand Design 31MB, provided the stock leaf spring is also 25-1/4" long. The suspension is all designed based on a specific length of spring, so it is critical that the replacement springs are identical in size to the stock springs. You can easily swap to the 5,200 lb axle like the part # 8327816 but you will need new hub/drums like the # 8-201-5UC3-EZ which has a 12 inch diameter (3,500 lb setups are 10 inch), and then for brake assemblies # 23-464-465 for a left and right hand side. Even if you remove the weight it will be longer than it was originally since they wear out over time so you need to account for that.
