Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Hi there, I'm Michael with Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this trailer axle with electric brakes. This is going to be a great option for replacing an axle on your trailer, whether you currently have an idler axle and your needing to switch it out so that you can get brakes put on there, or if you currently have an axle like this with electric brakes and something's not working on it, and you need to replace it, this is gonna do a great job for you. This is a round axle beam, that's got a sturdy steel construction, it's got a maximum weight capacity of 3,500 pounds, so it will work really well for your trailers with that same weight capacity. To measure our length, we are going to have two very important measurements to take. So you can see that our spring seats are welded in place here, so from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other spring seat, we're right at 74 inches.

From our hub face on one side to our hub face on the other, it's right at 89 inches, so make sure that that's gonna work for your trailer. You can see, right here in the middle, we do have a little bit of a bend, and that is going to be our camber to ensure that even when we have weight on our trailer, our wheels are going to ride nice and even getting that full traction that we need making sure that they're not gonna wear unevenly, so having that camber in there is gonna ensure that those are going to ride correctly, this is gonna be great for your straight line towing. Our spindles on the sides are welded in place, they are a straight installation, so there's no drop or rise to them at all, that's just straight in line with our axle. They are easy lube spindles, so you can see, we do have that grease zerk in the middle there, that's gonna make it much easier for us to get our whole system lubricated up. Our cap that will go on the outside once we have everything installed, has this plug here in the middle that we can simply pull away, get access to that grease zerk, hook up our grease gun, give it enough grease to lubricate it, you're not gonna have to worry about unhooking everything, pulling it all out, so that we can grease up the bearings, everything is gonna be very accessible there with that easy lube spindle.

And our spindles are welded in place using a patented welding process that prevents spindle failure with 40% stronger spindles, so a really nice option there to make this a lot more durable for you. You can see that our spring seats, like I said, they are welded in place, they're welded to the underside of our axle, so that we can mount our leaf springs in the underslung position to lower our deck height for easier loading and unloading. Our electric brakes are gonna be extremely easy to install, you don't have to worry about actuators or hydraulic lines, just super easy to run your wiring. You can see, we do have a double wire that runs through the axle, so that we can connect one side to the other. Your adjuster plugs and mounting hardware are included with this, so very easy to get installed.

And then our idler hubs here are cast iron, so they are gonna be very sturdy and durable. Our hub bolt pattern is gonna be 5 on 4 1/2 inches, So it's gonna work for your wheel sizes 13 inches up to 15 inches. The bearings, races, seals, and lug nuts are all included, they do come pre-greased, so you're not gonna have to worry about packing your bearings, just get it all installed and they'll be ready to go.
