Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Dexter Trailer Axles T20BTR-7258 Review

Today were going to review Part Number T20BTR-7258. This is the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with the standard spindles, 72 inches long, and a 2,000 pound weight capacity. This axle beam will act as part of your trailer suspension system. You can use this to replace an axle on your trailer or you can also use it to fabricate a suspension to fit your application. Its made of a high strength steel construction. Also its probably hard to see in the video, but it actually is raised in the center.

It will actually rise up and go down. The reason they do that when you mount it this way this will ensure the proper camber angle for your tires and wheels. Basically it will ensure that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. The bend will be raised up so when the trailer is loaded down and the weight is put on it it will actually force down and sort of straighten the axle out. What that will do is the bend will create a zero camber angle for even road to tread contact across the width of your trailer tires.

It is designed best for straight line acceleration and steady controlled towing. Right here these spring seat which theres one on each end, its designed with an under slung design, meaning this seats are welded to the underside of the axle. This is where your leaf springs would mount to. When they do that it gives you a low ride height which makes it easier to load and unload your trailer. The spindles they are a straight spindle. There is no drop to them. It is a standard grease application.

It does include when we ship these the castle nut and the cotter pin. When we do ship them they actually protect it because you dont want to ship them bare like this. They would actually have grease around them, and then a bubble wrap, and then over that they would put a corrugated tube and wrap that on there to protect the ends of the spindles so they dont get damaged in shipping. The spring seats and the spindles are all welded onto the axle. Specs on this has a weight capacity of 2,000 pounds. The tubing outer diameter right here is 1- inches.

The spindle diameter right down here is 1-1/16 inches. Basically there are multiple ways when you measure the length of an axle beam but the two most accurate ways are going to be the hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center. Basically on the hub face to hub face, this axle doesnt have any hubs on it right now, but when you would put your hubs on there on each end when youre measuring the hub face to hub face length thats actually measured from the base of one wheel stud on a hub to the base on the opposite end of the wheel stud on that hub of the opposite end. Basically if you did that, just to give you an idea Im going to try to show you the hub face to hub face on this axle is going to be right at 72 inches. The other one is the spring center to spring center which you can measure because its the measuring from the center of this spring mount to the center of that one over there. That base to this measurement will actually get you the approximate width of your trailer. Basically you measure from the center of that spring seat to the center of this one. You can see it's right at 58 inches. Basically if you're going to replace your trailers axle you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining the trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of the wheels, the brake type and then the two lengths I mentioned, the hub face and spring center lines. With that information should be able to get you the correct axle. That should do it for the review on Part Number T20BTR-7258. It's the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with the standard spindles, 72 inches long and a 2,000 pound weight capacity. .

Do you have a question about this Trailer Axle?

  • Replacement Axle for 2,000 Pound Dexter Axle on a Pop-Up Camper
  • We have straight axles that are close to the measurements you have provided, see link, but the spring seats would have to be moved and none of them have brake mounting flanges. I propose a different approach by using a Timbren axle-less system # ASR2KHDS01. This system will provide the "axle" as well as the suspension in one unit plus the suspension part will not wear out nearly as quickly as traditional leaf springs because the rubber won't corrode. They are also set up for electric...
