Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

You are welcome! Glad you have some peace of mind now.

Fit perfect. All parts from my old axle transferred without any problems. I welded the new saddles on the axle without any issues.

Worked as planned = a good fit. My application required me to weld new mounts to the opposite side of the axle - my application was over sprung and had a 68.5" mounting measurement.

The axel was received in excellent condition. After measuring twice I welded the spring pads on. It now sits in the rafters of garage. Dexter sent me a complete axel and spring assembly 2 days later that they said they would not. I now have a spare to take with me to Alaska next month.

Great service and product, it seems rare to find such quality customer service. Thank you

Got what i was looking for and got great input from Customer Assistance.

This was part of an upgrade. The easy lube feature is worth its weight in gold.

Great price great staff all the way aro und

Well wrapped and no rust to be found on the spindles which is good but its missing a few studs for the backing plates but i dont need them for this applications so it ok

Bought to replace a tube that was bent when I bought it. These are very nice axles, and the amenities of the ezlube setup is awesome. Definitely better than other axles I’ve had in the past

I order axle, u-bolt kit, and tire/wheel combos. Prices are great and products exactly as described. I received the items quickly. Great service.

My Bent Weak Axle Problems,Thanks

I like trailer and have ordered from them a number of times and will order again.

The products ordered came as what was in the description, came 1 day earlier than promised and were packaged well.

Fast delivery and was in stock. Made repairs quickly.

Part was a great fit & delivery was on time and properly packaged.
Definitely recommend & I will use this company if future trailer parts are needed.

I inherited an aluminum trailer that ended up needing a complete overhaul and etrailer was the best resource I could have found. After researching extensively to find out what I needed and watching their videos on how to do it I ended up ordering an EZ-lube axle, galvanized hubs, springs and a hanger kit (in other words everything from the frame down).
Everything shipped quickly and arrived in great shape. All the parts worked perfectly and I couldn't be happier!

Axle arrived in perfect condition, was also an exact fit for my Top Hat Trailer.
Your staff was of great help finding my right axle.
I would recommend etrailer to everyone.

After a rust related axle failure, my equipment trailer was down. (If you roll in the rust belt, check your axles near where the brake wire goes through)
After checking my local source, I was told there was a long lead time for new axles due to the pandemic.
I was so happy to find etrailer. They had the exact axles I needed. After I pulled the axles I realized I also needed hardware and u-bolts.
Everything arrived ahead of schedule, allowing me to get back up and running quickly.
Thank you etrailer. You are a valuable resource.

etrailer had the best prices and excellent customer service, Thanks Ian! Shipping was fast and free to boot. I bent the front axle on my in-laws fifth wheel camper and this axle fit the bill. I had to order a set of spring seats and weld them to the opposite sides. The original seats were at 68.5 " centers and that configuration was unavailable anywhere.

Perfect fit, nice axle and fast delivery. I liked it so much I ordered another a day later to replace the front axle. My 30 yr old tandem trailer's axle broke at the wheel, so I went to a local store which doesn't stock them anymore. Could of ordered a so so axle for $94 + $28 shipping and wait 2 weeks but needed it fast. I went to a major trailer sales & service shop and told "maybe we could get one for $250" with no call back. I decided to check out etrailer and was surprised to see Dexter axles that fit my trailer for $140 with FREE shipping in 3-4 days! Ordered Sat. night, got it Wednesday afternoon, and installed it (with brakes) in an hour. Only problem I had was determining if spindles would fit my hubs. They stated "1/16th spindle" and must be industry talk but french to me. So I had to look up bearing #'s they listed to check bearing sizes to make sure they fit my hubs. A little more time but not a deal breaker. The best part was the huge difference in ride with just one new axle. Always had bouncing loaded or not, but now with just one axle the ride is smoother no load and with my 4000 lb tractor on it. Can't wait to get the 2nd axle on that arrived today. First two pics show the difference between the old straight axle and the new dexter axle. The third is a pic of my 2nd axle, oh well. Etrailer is my new go to place for trailer parts. I have 7 trailers.

The axles were missing studs that fell out during shipping. Also, no nuts were included for mounting the brakes.

  • Could Tire Blow Out Cause Other Axle to Bend Spindle
Tire blow outs do not tend to bend or damage spindles but things can happen. I would recommend taking the trailer to an alignment shop who can do trailers and see what they think is going on. It could be damaged suspension components too so you might check there as well. To pick out a replacement axle you would need to know a few things but we don't what axle your trailer needs. You'd need to know the axle capacity, the distance from spring seat to spring seat on current axle as well as...

  • Will Bent Boat Trailer Frame With New Spindle Have Tire Wear?
Since you replaced the spindle, if the spindle is aligned properly with the axle, then the axle will be straight under the weight capacity of the axle. If you straighten the tongue and the other part of the bent frame is behind the rear most spring hanger, you should be able to drive straight and not impact the tracking or tire wear. If you don't get it straightened out correctly all the way to that rear spring hanger, then you could absolutely have a tire wear issue or tracking issue...
