Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Good or bad or so-so, we would love to know more! Please feel free to reach out with any comments you would like added to your review.

The axles that I ordered last year are still working out great. But even better than the parts was the service I got from etrailer. It was so great working with a company who took the time to listen to my project and help me get the right parts I needed, especially coming right off the heels of a terrible experience dealing with bad information and wrong parts from a competitor. Even with some damages in shipping, the returns/ and replacements were no hassle, with most issues being quickly resolved and not even costing me any additional downtime. As a contractor keeping a small fleet rolling, your competency and professionalism have made me a customer for life!! You guys at etrailer will be my first stop for trailer parts.

So far performing well. Have not been able to use trailer yet as much as I wanted to, don't use the grease nipples. Its easy to regrease without.

Everything is working perfect with that replacement axle. I have definitely put it to the test a lot of miles with a lot of weight. Very highly recommended.

Very easy installation. Everything fit perfect.

Axle arrived fast, was exactly what I ordered and needed. Install went well with no problems.

The axle was exactly what I ordered and showed up much quicker than I expected. I installed it in about an hour. Good quality. Having the wire for the brakes already ran inside the axle made it very easy to rewrite the brakes, nice feature.

Worked great on my trailer.
It is a older
trailer and I needed to move the anchor points on the axel but that was not difficult to have done.
Axel works great.
I love the easy grease feature.

Direct replacement for my rusted out axles on my car trailer, perfect fit, awesome quick shipping thanks etrailer

I needed to replace my 3500lb drop axle. website is easy to navigate. I found a new axle, the price was reasonable, free shipping, it arrived in a few days and fit perfectly. I’m totally happy with the axle and the service I received from etrailer. I will definitely use them again.

A+ works great. Fast shipping if I ever need axle again will buy from you

Should come with the nuts for the breaks

This axle fit and has done a great job for the loads it has hauled

Received the axle about 1pm the next day after I ordered it! I didn't get home till 3, removed the old one slid the new one in, fit like a glove, and had it buttoned up back on its wheels by 5:30pm. Awesome!!!!

I could not find the exact axle for my 2006 Carryall tandem axle trailer. This one was a perfect fit between spring perches but increased the distance between wheels by one inch. Also had to use a wheel seal with a larger ID. This was not a problem at all. I will be replacing the front axle shortly. The originals had a rust issue where the spring gripes (u-bolts) hold the axle. Well built product!

Arrived quickly was easy to install, has been going strong for a year now.

Good quality, quick delivery, everything fit as expected. Thank you again, etrailer!

Don't change anything you guys do . Very impressive . My axle shipped shortly after I ordered it, and on Sunday. Love the tracking setup and fast shipping. Not to mention the price and nice quality. Thanks

stated order delivered. but only u-bolts and bearings. no axle? delivered next day.

Great product. Fast and on time delivery. Thank you.

I have used and abused this axle on my 20' tandem axle trailer for a year and it has held up extremely well! it fit perfectly and was easy to install.

Great experience.

  • Replacement Axle for 6K Dexter Axle with 89-1/2" Hub-Face and 71-1/2" Spring-Center Dimensions
The best solution we have for your application is the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # TASR7KS01 rated for 7K. We have the Trailer Axle Beam # e33GR that has matching spring centers but the hub face is 86-1/2" as opposed to 89-1/2" like what you measured. I'm attaching a video where we show how to measure for these distances that you can reference but if it does end up being that 89-1/2" then you'll either need to swap your trailer over to the Timbren system mentioned above...

  • Replacement Axle for 2018 Grand Design Reflection 337RLS
For your 2018 Grand Design Reflection 337RLS you need a 6,000 lb axle with an 86-1/2" hub face measurement and 68-1/2" spring center length. Since the spring seats can be moved, you can use the Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles # e33GR as a replacement. This axle matches your current axle length and has a spring center measurement of 71-1/2". You will need to cut off the spring seats on the # e33GR and weld on # TRSS300 to match your current spring-center-to-spring-center length....

  • Replacement Axle for Homemade Trailer
Axle length is measured from hub face to hub face. I can find replacement axles based on this measurement, but not backing plate to backing plate. The spring center is less important since spring seats can be moved if necessary. If you want a 3" diameter axle it is going to be a 5,200-7,000 lb axle which won't use hubs that have a 5 lug pattern. The # e33GR you looked at has a hub face measurement of 86-1/2", spring center length of 71-1/2", and a 3" diameter with a 6,000 lb capacity....

  • Replacement for 5,100 Pound 86-1/2 Inch Long Overslung Dexter Axle
When choosing a replacement axle you want one that is the same length. Since you have a hub face measurement of 86.51" a better choice would be an 86-1/2" axle. The # e65SR is an 89" axle so it is several inches longer. Also, you don't need a 6k axle, a 5,200 lb axle is fine. You can use a 6k axle but you need to keep in mind that this will not increase the capacity of your trailer. For an axle that is equivalent to the # e65SR I recommend the # e73SR, or if you just need the axle itself...

  • 86 Inch Axle With Hub and Electric Brakes For Enclosed Trailer
The closest we have to that is an 86-1/2 inch hub-face to hub-face axle with springs seats that are 71-1/2 inches center to center. So what you would need to do is get new springs seats and have them welded on the axle at the correct length. You also need to make sure the axle is properly rated for your enclosed trailer; the two axle capacities we offer that are 86-1/2 inches long are 5,200 lb and 6,000 lb capacity. For the axles, spring seats, hubs, and brakes you can use the following: -...

    The electric brakes of the Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - Easy Grease - 6 on 5-1/2 - 86-1/2" Long - 6,000 lbs # e73SR are not self-adjusting, they are manual-adjust.
