  • Disc brakes deliver better performance than drum brakes
    • More consistent stopping, even at highway speeds
    • Dramatically shorter stopping distance
  • Maintenance costs are lower than for drum brakes

    • Low-drag design retracts piston farther than other calipers for a cooler-running brake
    • Stainless steel piston is 2-1/4" in diameter - 30 percent larger than other brands
      • More braking torque than the competition
    • High-performance, ceramic brake pads
  • Ductile iron mounting brackets provide strength and durability
    • Side-support design ensures that load is placed on bracket, not bolts

Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts that will require repair or replacement, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Rotors and Hub Spacers

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotors work in conjunction with the included hub spacers to easily convert your idler axle to a disc brake axle. The hub spacers are designed to replace your standard idler hubs, and they come furnished with races and wheel bolts (bearings and seals are sold separately). Once the spacers are in place, the rotors can be slipped on. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace just one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Replaced drum brakes with these disc brakes. Very easy installation, however, had to get someone that knows what they are doing to bleed and pressurize the brake lines. Attaching the reverse lockout wire to the reverse lights very simple also. Disc brakes has much less movable parts that can "break".

by:

My problem was quickly resolved and the result exceeded my expectations.

by:

Fast shipping and very easy to install. This is my first time ever installing brakes on a trailer, and instructions were very easy to follow. The entire project was done in about 4 hours, including 2 trips to the store for supplies I should have had ahead of time (marine grease, brake fluid and bolts).

by:

Machining on two of the rotor assemblies were poor with missing or improper countersink holes for rotor mount bolts. Had to countersink like the other two because rotor mount bolts interfered with bracket bolts. One of these rotors also rubbed on the bracket and needed to be machined to prevent the rubbing. Unacceptable quality control on these parts.

by:

These were returned do to the brackets for the calipers didn't let them fit over the rotors. we tried them in two different positions and they didn't fit. Pads sat on top of rotors and would not fit over them. so I returned them.

by:

one of the brackets was 1/16 too small to fit on the lip. I should have noticed it at installation but didn't. Other than that system works great

by:

Great product, no issues, my truck no longer has to do all the work like it used to.

by:

It was as described, haven't installed it yet

by:

great crafted set up. easy install, shipp;ed fast, priced right. fit nice.

  • How to Add Hydraulic Drum or Disc Brakes to a Pontoon Boat Trailer
You can equip your pontoon boat trailer with either hydraulic drum or hydraulic disc brakes. You are correct that electric brakes are not a good option since water and electricity don't get along well together. You can get a start by reviewing the two linked articles concerning how to add hydraulic brakes to a trailer. There is an article for the drum brake application and one for disc brakes. Each of these gives you a full picture of the things to confirm and the parts required. Disc...

There isn't a specific disc brake kit for 4,400 lb axles. The 4,400 lb axles use the same braking system as the 3,500 lb axles, so you can use the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 8" Rotor/Hub - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet - 3,500 lbs # K2HR35D-8 if you have 10-13 inch wheels and I recommend the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 10" Hub/Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet - 3,500 lbs # K2HR35D for 14 to 15 inch wheels. These assemblies use bearing # L68149 and # L44649 so you will want to confirm the fit with your...

I did some research and found that the Kodiak Disc Brakes - 2 Wheel Set - 8" Rotor and Hub Spacer 3,500 lbs # K2HR35D-8 will be your best bet. This is compatible with your 5 on 4-1/2" pattern and your 10" wheels. The bearings and seals are not included. For the seal go with Grease Seal # RG06-050, for the inner bearing go with # L68149, for the outer bearing you will need # L44649.

  • Can You Put 10" Wheels On a 3,500 Lb Axle with Brakes
I do have an option for you but you can't run electric brakes on a 3,500 lb axle with 10" wheels as 10" brakes are too large and 7" brakes have different brake mounting flanges. That said, you can switch to surge brakes like the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit part # K2HR35D-8 which are a confirmed fit for a 3,500 lb axle and will fit 10" wheels. Then for hydraulic drum brakes we have just one option, # T4442000 for the right side and # T4442100 for the left side. These are designed for 3,000 pound axles. For disc brakes we have the following options: For 2,000 pound axles we have # K2HR2D. For 3,500 pound axles we have # K2HR35D-8.

  • How to Know What Weight Rating is Needed When Converting from Drum to Disc Brakes
Good questions and there is a lot here so let's start with the simplest thing, the weight rating. Trailer brakes are rated based on their axle; for example, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D-8 is designed for a 3,500 lb axle and a tandem axle trailer with a pair of 3,500 lb axles would need two of these, so the first thing to know is the weight rating of your axles. Then to get the correct fit, since you are replacing a hub and drum, you are going to need a disc brake kit with a hub...

  • Why Is Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D-8 Limited To 13 Inch Wheels
The reason the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, part # K2HR35D-8 is limited to 10 inch to 13 inch wheels is because of the hub surface. My contact told me that the rotor size at 8 inches would not have enough mating surface for the wheel and can cause it to wobble if too large of a wheel is installed on the hub. The bolt pattern may be the same but the hub is not designed for a larger wheel. If you have a 14 inch wheel and it has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern I recommend part # K2HR35D. This uses...
