Electric Brakes for a 3500-LB Axle with 10" Wheels
Updated 01/25/2021 | Published 01/19/2021 >
Question:
Hi. I was hoping you could help me. I bought a 20ft 4 place snowmobile trailer that has two 3500lb axles under it with 4 bolt brake mounting plates. It has 10 wheels and 205/65-10 tires. It currently does not have brakes on it and is completely wired for electric brakes including a breakaway box. I cannot seem to find any brakes that will seem to work with a 3500 lb axle and still fit the 10 wheels though. Is there an inexpensive way to do this or am I looking at having to change the axles to 2000lb and then install brakes? I dont believe i can fit larger tires because my axles are already under the springs and theres not enough room to enlarge the tires.. Thanks for any help you can give.

You are correct in that we do not have electric brakes compatible with 10" wheels on a 3500-lb axle. In fact, the only brakes we offer for that combination is the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 8" Rotor/Hub - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet, part # K2HR35D-8, which is disc brakes (I've linked to a video review of them below).
The reason for this is that 3500-lb axles are rarely supported by 10" wheels. Looking through our site, the highest capacity 205/65-10 tires we have are for 1650 lbs. Two of those together would not support a 3500-lb axle.
All of that to say that you may have uncommon axles that we would need more information on to get everything sorted. If you can take apart your hubs and drums, locate the bearings, and give me the numbers for the inner and outer, we may be able to find a better solution for you. I've linked to a help article to assist you with this.
If you do end up going with the disc brakes, they will require an hydraulic brake actuator and lines. Before that though, it would be best to get those numbers so we're sure we're getting you the proper parts.
