Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.


Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.


Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.


Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Today we're going to review Part No. K1HR35D. This is the Kodiak Disc Brake assembly. It's a 10-inch hub and rotor with a five on 4.5-inch bolt pattern. It's on a 3500-pound axle, and it has the Dacromet finish. This brake assembly, we'll make it easy to upgrade from drum to disc brakes for better performance. When you go to disc brakes, you'll get more consistent stopping event at highway speeds, and it also give you dramatically shorter stopping distances.

Also, the maintenance cost are lower than for drum brakes because you have fewer moving parts to maintain, repair, and replace. The Dacromet plating on all these parts provides a superior corrosion resistance with freshwater or saltwater use. All of the parts that are Dacromet plated have a 400 to 600 hours salt spray rating. This hub and rotor is an integral one piece hub and rotor assembly. Because it's all one piece, it will minimize the lateral run-out, prevent any warping, provides also a smooth ride because the hub and the rotor are balanced. It does use the industry-standard bearings which are included, and the grease seal. The bearing raises themselves, already preinstalled on the outer.

If I spin this around, also they're raised on the inner. This is a vented design rotor as you can see here. What that does is this will effectively dissipate the heat buildup, and that will prevent any heat related damage to the rotor. The caliper itself right here, this is a cast iron caliper, which is self-adjusting for smooth, equal braking. The cast iron construction of it does not flex like some of the aluminum calipers. It has a low drag design which uses a piston right here that activates the brakes. It will retract further than a lot of other calipers and give you a cooler running brake. The piston is a stainless steel piston.

It is 2.25 inches in diameter, and that's about a 30% larger piston than a lot of the other brands. Because of that, you'll get more braking torque than the competition. The red pad you can see here, they are a high performance ceramic brake pad. The mounting bracket, this is an iron mounting bracket. It provides strength and durability. It has a nice side support design here.

I'm sure that the load is placed on the whole bracket, not just on the mounting bolt. It have some extra embossing right up here at the very top where the caliper mounting bolt screw in. This will give you additional thread contact and it will ensure a tight, secure mount for the caliper guide bolts. If you notice, this is a four-bolt brake flange mounting configuration. We do have a weld-on flange if you'd like. That is sold separately on our website. This part will include everything shown here on the table. It's one full brake assembly. It's one Dacromet plated cast iron hub and rotor assembly. It's one Dacromet plated cast iron caliper. One Dacromet plated iron caliper mounting bracket with the four bolts and nuts to install it. It has the two stainless steel caliper mounting bolts to attach the caliper to the bracket. It comes with the grease cap that would go on. It comes with five with a half inch wheel lug nuts that would be used to hold the tire and wheel onto your hub. It also includes the bearings, inner and outer bearings, and the grease seal. There are a couple other things required that would be sold separately. You do need to have a hydraulic brake actuator and hydraulic lines on your trailer. We do sell those separately if they're needed. They are required for these brakes to be activated in which you want to make sure is that the actuator and the lines that you get, it does require the PSI rating of them to be at least 1500 PSI. A few specs again, this will fit on axle, a 3500-pound axle, with the No. 84 Spindle. It does use a wheel size of 13 inches and larger. The bolt pattern is a five on 4.5-inch bolt pattern. The diameter on the rotor is 10 inches. The wheel stud again is a half inch, so it uses these included half inch lug nuts. Again, the brake flange configuration is a four-bolt design. That should do it for the review on Part No. K1HR35D Kodiak Disc Brake assembly, the 10-inch hub and rotor, and the five on 4.5-inch bolt pattern. .
