When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

EZ-Latch Coupler

Cast Coupler Cutaway

This coupler features a simple-to-use latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. With this mechanism, hooking up is as easy as dropping the coupler over your trailer hitch ball. The latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is automatic. Disengaging the coupler is just as effortless. Simply lift up the handle and the coupler socket will automatically release its grip on the ball.

Demco EZ-Latch in Use

The contoured, low-profile design of the latch handle helps protect the coupler from damage by allowing any potential hazards - from debris on the road to your ball mount backing into the coupler - to simply slide over the top. This helps prevent anything from getting under the latch handle and releasing the ball, and it can also limit any damage to the coupler should an impact occur

Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Made of sturdy steel, this hydraulic trailer brake actuator features a durable zinc coating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. This zinc coat has a 120-hour salt spray rating. In addition, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability.

this is the best product it's so easy to use!just lower the hitch and it locks in and is also easy to unhitch, no binding. I would highly recommend this actuator.

by:

Best brake actuator I have ever used. Had issues with my brake line fitting up to the actuator and George J helped me trouble shoot the problem and got it resolved in no time. Best price, best product and superior support staff. I would not hesitate to purchase any product from them at all and will definitely use them in the future for all my trailer needs.

After using this product for a year I will have to say it is still the best product I’ve ever used. I would recommend using it for your own personal use.

Nice replacement for old out of date surge coupler. Fast shipping, and everything seems to work like it should. Wish that etrailer would include the factory Demco install manual, but was able to find it on the web.

by:

This actuator works great with the brakes and love the easy “click” hookup. Would highly recommended

This actuator works great! Really easy to connect and disconnect it. I highly putting this on your boat trailer.

by:

The whole staff at etrailer bent over backwards to make sure I was satisfied with the installation of brakes on my trailer. Have made several purchases from them always satisfied with parts and service. Special credit to Jamie great to deal with. Answered all my questions and was very knowledgeable.

by:

After spending a long time on the phone with etrailer sending Pictures, they told me this is what I needed. Well Ordered and didn't have time right away to install, since it was snowing. This wasn't even close. Wasted couple hundert bucks on the wrong part.

by:

Fits perfectly. Easy to install. An excellent replacement.

by:

I recently replaced my old actuator. Price and delivery was very good. after the install we went to bleed the brakes and the master cylinder was defective. Called Demco and they immediately knew the issue because they have been having problems. They shipped a replacement master cylinder to be installed by us. Good customer service by Demco but caused labor costs to be more than double original estimate.

by:

I received the actuator and unfortunately the master cylinder appears to be defective and I could not get it to pump any fluid at all. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong with the install (although we're dealing with simple physics)and called etrailers but they had nothing to add. To etrailers credit, they are to send me another unit via express tomorrow (no shipments on Sunday). Will post an update on the new unit.

by:

Excellent support from Nicole in helping me confirm availability of all my material needs for my boat trailer brake upgrade from Drum to Disk. Have not actually done the install but parts arrived a day early and look to be high quality. This actuator is a perfect fit to replace my old drum brake surge actuator. Thanks Nicole!!

by:

The videos really helped convince me the Demco was the one to buy. Came on time. Is exactly what I expected. Nice hitch. MUCH better design than the old actuator hitch, which had become disfunctional.

by:

It was delivered very quickly and on my doorstep. I bought this to put on a Tow Dolly I purchased to pull my car behind my motorhome. The surge brake will make it much safer going through the mountains on my way south. I also feel the price was great.

by:

I guess I didn’t read enough, I wanted an actuator that did both drum and disc. Now just ordered a disc brake kit which is what I wanted just not now, but I know I’m better off that it’ll be done all at once.

by:

SO far so good the unit showed up very quickly and I like the self locking unit. It should have keeper pin included with it other than that I like the design.

by:

Excellent replacement for my 2008 EZ Loader trailer

by:

Hit brakes trailer stops. That's what I want it to do and that's what it does.

by:

Excellent quality. I had to drill an extra hole for mounting, no problem. No manual for bleeding or parts breakdown was included so I downloaded the manual from Demco website.

by:

Product was exactly as advertised. Shipping date kept getting pushed back and the item arrived much later than anticipated.

by:

This actuator has great features at an exceptional price. Also, it's proudly made in the USA!

by:

Excellent service as usual. The part was on backorder just like everything else. They were in constantly in contact keeping me updated. Hopefully I'll get to install it after the holiday.

by:

Exactly what I needed. Great online documentation. Speedy delivery

by:

Easy to install works great fast shipping thanks!

  • Parts Needed To Replace Torsion Axles On Tandem Axle Boat Trailer With Leaf Spring Axles
I recommend checking out the Timbren Silent Ride Suspension # TSR7000T04 for your 2016 EZ Loader trailer. This will allow you to bolt the suspension to the trailer rather than having to have frame hangers welded on. It also uses a rubber spring suspension system which is more progressive than steel and will help reduce bouncing much better. You will be able to attach 2 Straight Axles # 7359765-I or 4" Drop Axles # 7685269-I with idler hubs. I do recommend checking your local laws for trailer...

  • Replacement For Atwood 85091 Actuator as There Are Not Replacement Parts
Atwood is out of business which is why there isn't a replacement master cylinder to be found. So you'll have to replace your actuator with an appropriate option, like the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator - Disc # DM62VR or Drum # DM72VR depending on what type of brakes you have. I have added a link below to our entire selection of actuators.

  • Installation Video For Surge Brake Actuator
Hello Maxim. I do have a video that I think you will find helpful, but we do not have a video showing installation of the exact Dexter Actuator # T47457107K that you mentioned. We do have a video showing installation of a similar bolt-on actuator, the Demco # DM62VR, and I have provided a link to the video below. So it is not the exact same model of actuator, but it should still give you a good enough idea of how to get one installed.

  • Replacement Part Availability And Options For Replacing An Atwood Brake Actuator
Replacement parts for an Atwood actuator are going to be very hard to find these days. Atwood stopped producing actuators quite a while back, so at this point unless you can find parts secondhand, replacing the actuator is going to be your best bet. To replace the Atwood actuator the Demco # DM72VR for drum brakes or # DM62VR for disc brakes will work really well. These have a 7,000 pound towing weight capacity, a trigger-style latch that's easy to use for a secure connection with the...

  • Parts Needed To Convert From Electric Drum Brakes To Hydraulic Disc Brakes
Hey Shawn, The first thing to check is going to be what bearings and grease seal fit your axle's spindle. You can remove a hub and check the bearings and seal to see if the part numbers are still stamped onto them but you're most likely need to measure the spindle. Using a caliper # PTW80157 you'll measure points B, C, and D from the diagram below to determine the inner diameters of these components. You can measure the bore hole for the hub (also shown in diagram) to get the outer diameters....

Atwood is no longer around and parts for the Atwood 85778 are no longer available. Since there are no replacement options for the master cylinder your only choice is to replace the coupler with a new one. I recommend the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout # DM62VR. This is designed for disc brakes and comes with an electric lockout. It also uses the EZ-Latch coupler which allows you to hook up while the latch is in the closed position.

  • Can Disc Brakes Be Added To A Lippert 4,400 lb Axle?
Hello Josh. It is possible to convert your Lippert 4,400 lb axles over to disc brakes. The 4,400 lb axles generally use the same braking system as a 3,500 lb axle. These assemblies use bearing # L68149 and # L44649 so you will want to confirm the fit with your spindle. Assuming this is all correct, there are hubs that can be used on your trailer, but they are going to have the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. There is nothing in a 6 lug so if you convert you will need new wheels and tires too....

  • Is There Demco Surge Coupler that Can be Used with Drum Brakes
Hey Al, so we have a solution but since disc brakes require a higher PSI than drum the # DM62VR would not work on drum brakes. Instead you'd want to go with the part # DM72VR which is basically the exact same thing but made for drum brakes. You can lock this to a hitch ball with the coupler lock like the InfiniteRule part # IR66FR which was designed specifically for this coupler.

Most brake actuators for drum brakes like your Dico 6000 lb cannot be used for disc brakes. This isn't based on weight capacity, but rather based on the pressure the master cylinder can handle. Most drum brake systems give you 1000 to 1200 psi, and disc brake systems require more with most rated at 1600 psi.
