When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

EZ-Latch Coupler

Cast Coupler Cutaway

This coupler features a simple-to-use latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. With this mechanism, hooking up is as easy as dropping the coupler over your trailer hitch ball. The latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is automatic. Disengaging the coupler is just as effortless. Simply lift up the handle and the coupler socket will automatically release its grip on the ball.

Demco EZ-Latch in Use

The contoured, low-profile design of the latch handle helps protect the coupler from damage by allowing any potential hazards - from debris on the road to your ball mount backing into the coupler - to simply slide over the top. This helps prevent anything from getting under the latch handle and releasing the ball, and it can also limit any damage to the coupler should an impact occur

Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Made of sturdy steel, this hydraulic trailer brake actuator features a durable zinc coating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. This zinc coat has a 120-hour salt spray rating. In addition, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability.

  • Replacement Surge Brake Actuator For Atwood 61101
Atwood is no longer in business, which means replacement parts are unfortunately no longer available for your Atwood 61101 surge brake actuator. The best option available if yours is no longer working is to replace the actuator, which you can do with either of the following models, depending on if you have drum brakes or disc brakes. - Drum Brakes: Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM72VR - Disc Brakes: Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM62VR Both of these actuators are bolt-on...

  • Correct Replacement for Disc Brake Demco DA66B Actuator
The correct replacement for a Demco DA66B Actuator is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator part # DM62VR. This will be a direct bolt-on replacement for the existing model, no drilling required. It uses a three hole pattern but the two holes will match the ones you have now and you can choose to drill the third lower hole or just use the top two. There are only two required. The brake line fittings will be the same.

  • What Is The Difference Between A Disc Brake and Drum Brake Surge Brake Actuator?
The difference between the Demco # DM62VR for disc brakes and the Demco # DM72VR for drum brakes is the pressure each one operates at so that why they cannot be interchanged. Disc brakes require 1600 PSI where drums like what your trailer has require around 1000 PSI. For a surge brake actuator compatible with drum brakes and a reverse lockout solenoid I recommend going with the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-00 which...

  • Weight of Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuating Coupler
Minus the packaging, the Demco # DM62VR Hydraulic Brake Actuating Coupler weighs about 18 lbs. The coupler is compatible with trailers weighing up to 7000 lbs with disc brakes. The coupler fits a 2 inch trailer ball, and is equipped with an electric lockout solenoid that will prevent the brakes from engaging when the tow vehicle is shifted into reverse, assuming that the coupler is installed correctly and the center pin of the 7-way on the tow vehicle is tied into the reverse lamp circuit. • Disc Brake Compatible Replacement for Tie Down Model 660 Surge Brake Actuator
In regards to surge brakes, disc brakes require a much higher psi than drum brakes for proper operation therefore the two types of brake actuators (disc/drum) are not cross-compatible. The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator part # DM62VR would be a great disc brake compatible replacement for a Tie Down Model 660. It has an electric lockout which you can use to prevent the brakes from locking up while in reverse but it does not have to be hooked up.

I was able to do a little bit of research and it looks like the Karavan trailer you're referring to had a 7000-lbs surge actuator. To replace that I recommend using the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Disc - Zinc - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs # DM62VR, which will bolt onto a 3" wide channel tongue and gives you a durable zinc-plating that's going to stand up to rust and corrosion really well. • Actuator/Coupler Replacement for 85841 on Sea Ray Boat Trailer
Since your trailer has disc brake it will be very important that you pick out a actuator/coupler that is rated for that and not drum brakes as that is a lower pressure rating that won't work well. The 85841 is no longer made so it would be tough to find so I would recommend going with a new coupler setup like the # DM62VR which you could bolt onto your frame once you cut off the older welded on model. If you wanted to weld this in place of what you have you certainly could do that as well.
