How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I purchased this jack to replace my tired 10 year old camper jack . I ordered it at 10:00 AM Monday and as promised by Ian it was at my doorstep on Friday just in time for my weekend getaway . Installation was a breeze . I gave the product a 4 out of 5 for a few reasons .
First , I was not able to see the manufacturer of the jack before receiving it . Which made name brand comparison pricing difficult . However I feel pricing was on target .
Second , I feel that the jack should come with a battery terminal end connector and new mounting bolts with the hardware that was included . This didn’t pose any difficulty to me as I had hardware at hand but for some it will mean a trip or two to the hardware store . Third , once installed , at least with my truck and trailer , unless the truck and trailer are perfectly aligned and level the jack motor gets in the way of opening the tail gate .
On first use I noticed it was much slower than my original but the strength made up for it . This jack had no difficulty or hesitation lifting my truck and trailer for load distribution and anti sway bar installation . I would recommend etrailer and this product . Time will be the final test of its durability .

I’ve owned this jack for a year now and it’s still working like new . The Motor still gets in the way of the tailgate from time me to time but I’ve learned to work around it . The strength of this jack is incredible ! I’d recommend it for its value and retailer for its customer service !! Since purchasing this jack from etrailer I’ve done business with them again and I’m extremely satisfied . If I need a part they’ll get my business.

We own a Forest River Wildwood FSX travel trailer and decided this Spring to invest in a powered tongue jack to make setup and breakdown easier for our camping trips this year. The EJ-3520-WBX Ram Powered Jack was the perfect choice. Very easy to install (less than 30 minutes) and it works just fine. No more hand cranking up or down!

by:

Terrible workmanship. The screws attaching the cover were completely misaligned. It almost looked as if this was intentional. The lens for the light was loose in the box. I did manage to straighten it out enough to reattach the cover, but it was still somewhat distorted, so not a great fit.

I have used it for a couple of outings now and the jack appears to function OK.

That is not good, definitely sounds like its not right for you. Let me get you over to our customer service department for them to get you a return label.

by:

Works great, easy to install and doesn't go that slow up or down. Pretty quiet, haven't tested the light in the dark, but looks more capable than those on other units I've seen. Price was a good value and I really like the adjustable leg attached to the supplied foot.

by:

It’s a jack and it does what a jack supposed to do in best way possible. It saves time and energy for hitch and unhitch especially when weight distribution is involve. It’s a general reason to have electric jacks. This one have not disappointed me with my light trailer. No malfunction no skiping. Easy installation on standard frame. I like it and I believe it was money well spent.

Still working flawlessly

by:

Jack does the job. It replaced the 11 year old Lippert jack that completely seized up on my 19' travel trailer.
Install was easy, matched right up, the drop leg is a nice plus that the Lippert didn't have.
It is quieter and smoother but it is also slower than the Lippert, but fast enough. The cover design is a bit clunky looking and doesn't feel very substantial, but it works.
After installing the jack, I turned on the jack light, one of the 3 LEDs blew out. Contacted eTrailer and a replacement LED board was sent the next day. Replacement was 10 minute job. Thank you etrailer for the quick support.
Depending on how long it lasts, it looks like it was a pretty good deal overall for the price.

Its still working fine with no functional issues after a year. The 3 screws that hold on the white plastic cover have rusted and left rust stains. Maybe replace them with stainless.

by:

I am happy with how fast it was delivered. But the packing worried me. The small plastic lights were just tossed into the box along with the very heavy trailer hitch. The edge of the box was torn. The heavy metal hitch could have very easily crushed the plastic items. Maybe those could have been placed inside a rolled up paper bag.

But lucking out there was no breakage.

I will review after I install. But I like it. The led light wires are big enough to splice onto other wires.

Consider me happy

by:

Ok.... the customer service from ETRAILER totally saved the review! These guys are incredibly awesome. I ordered 2 of the jacks. The first came with a broken housing cover , the light had beed disloged, and the up down switch was wired backwards. (Up would put the jack down and down would put the jack up)

Solution? Glad you asked! I contacted ram about the cover.... waiting! The light was easy to correct, just had to slide it back into the slit that holds it. Switch, well.... if-your2 not comfortable with wiring, I recommend not even attempt to rewire. I just popped it out of the cover, twisted 1/2 turn, popped it back in. Total time to correct.... 8-10 minutes. Total time to install, 15 minutes.

Total job less than 30 minutes.

Would I recommend this jack... YES. Despite a shipping issue to crack the housing ... its easy to install, price right, powerful. I dont have to hand crank. Simple correction to the switch. And they could use some r&d improvment on the light... but excellent jack! It does what i meeded it to at an affordable price!

It is amazing, single best aftermarket upgrade I’ve made!

by:

It was delivered in excellent condition. It is exactly as described on the website. My husband is extremely happy as this one is a better design because the caps arent exposed that allow moisture in. He is very pleased.

by:

So glad I ordered this electric tongue jack. It makes life much easier. Thank you. It is a great product.

by:

I have a 2020 travel trailer and the electric jack stopped working. I ordered this and it was a simple and easy install. Just one wire to splice (power from RV battery) and three bolts. Replace and install took 20 minutes and the new jack works great. Priced was reasonable and the jack itself was made well and seems more sturdy than the one that came with the trailer.

by:

This electric jack has been a great add on to my 2016 Casita Travel Trailer.
I installed it myself in less than an hour (including electrical hook up) just remove three bolts from the old hand jack and it pops out, replace the electric jack in same holes with new bolts (included).
Great purchase for the money!

by:

We love it. Easy to install and use.

This is my first time shopping at etrailer and was a little concerned because of their low prices and of the quality of their products and the service I would receive. But after giving them the benefit of the doubt I am a believer. They excelled at both quality and service and I received my order in just a few days. The 3 screws that hold the cover on were missing , called customer service & they were shipped the next day. The quality of the electric jack exceeded my expectations and I am very pleased. I will definitely be shopping etrailer in the future.

by:

I was a little skeptical on the purchase at first reading some reviews about this jack, Customer Service seems to be right on the ball when questioned them on a tracking BOOM it was in route and 3 days it arrived !!and when it came in I immediately opened it up and Yep as most reviews had stated about the screws on the plastic housing , which they were recessed in , wth!! Why can't they just take 3 lousy washers and use them!! I still will give this unit a 5* because that wasn't really a big deal. The 3500lb jack lifts my 3100lb Rockwood with ease, I've tested it a few times and it works awesome, some reviews said they struggled well maybe get the correct rated jack for your camper, trailer etc!! This saves my back bc of a back injury , no more cranking!! I would recommend this jack at this time, would like to follow up in the months to come to see how it holds up!
Thank you etrailer!!

Great product. For a disabled person, this is one item that is help me continue to go camping. I was still running strong and hasnt given me any problems at all.

by:

Web site easy to use. Trailer jack came in quick. I like not having to wonder if my online order is going to ship or get delivered. Every time i order from this company i get an email they received my order. I get an email that it shipped. I get an email that it was Delivered. Now days its common to place an online order and you take a chance of not knowing if you going to get anything. I recommend this company.

by:

Pretty simple to install took all about 20 minutes I lowered the trailer on jack stands raised the damaged jack removed 3 bolts and one wire and replaced.

by:

Was standing next to my RV looking at the hole in the tongue where the jack goes and the UPS driver stops in front of the house. He has my new electric jack I ordered the day before and hands it to me. 10 minutes later I have a working electric jack on my trailer. DIsclaimer here, I did prep for the arrival this morning.

by:

Great price. no more cranking and getting sweaty ;).. Thanks etrailer

  • Replacement Cover For Ram 3500lb Electric Trailer Jack
I am sorry to hear that the cover on your Ram 3500lb electric jack broke. There are two different covers based on which jack you have. If you jack is the Electric Jack w/ Footplate - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 25-1/8" Lift - 3,500 lbs - White # EJ-3520-WBX you will need the Replacement Cover # EJ-3520-CVRW, or if you have the # EJ-3527-BBX you were looking at you will need the Replacement Cover # EJ-3520-BCV.

  • How to Determine Correct Size Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack for 12,500-lb Triple Axle Trailer
The correct electric A-Frame trailer tongue jack for your 12,500-lb triple axle travel trailer will need to have the capacity that will surpass your trailer's loaded tongue weight, which is typically between 10 and 15 percent of the loaded trailer's weight. So your 12,500 pound trailer would have a tongue weight between 1250 lbs and 1875 lbs, so any trailer jack rated over 2,000 lbs would be sufficient to lift the trailer's tongue, however I recommend a higher capacity and high quality...
