Video Transcript for etrailer Electric Jack with Footplate and 7-Way Plug Review

Randy: Hey guys, it's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at an A-frame trailer jack that's a direct replacement for the Ram jack. This is our etrailer 3,500 pound lift capacity jack.Something unique about this one, it's designed to plug directly into the back of your vehicle in your seven-pull, so we don't have to have an onboard battery in our trailer. We don't have to worry about rigging up a junction box and wiring this to it. Basically we plug this directly into the back of our vehicle, and as long as we have a working 12-volt power source coming to that, which most seven-pulls will, the jack and the light are going to operate fine.I've worked with a ton of different jacks over the years and I really like the way this one works. A lot of times ground issues that we have through our trailer or our junction box not being wired properly lead into issues when we want to operate it.

Being able to plug this directly into the back of a truck I think is going to save a lot of headaches and a lot of issues. Even the ground for it is going to come through your vehicle, so you don't have to worry about the connection point between the jack and the trailer, which I think is really important. Now with the 3,500 pound capacity that it has and the 25-1/8" of travel, I think this is going to be a jack ideally suited for small, medium and large A-frame trailers.Generally we're not going to have 3,500 pounds of tongue weight on a trailer, but by having a jack that has that kind of capacity, the jack doesn't have to work very hard. On this trailer, even when we have this trailer loaded down the jack remains very quiet. You'll see that in a few minutes, and overall it's one of my favorites. In talking with customers about it, I've never really had any complaints about it. We have an LED light up here on the front which not only kind of illuminates forward, but also straight down here to where your coupler is at to make it really easy when we're connecting to our ball at night or if we're trying to get a weight distribution system start up at night, and overall this is definitely a jack that I would own.Now in the event you have some kind of failure on your vehicle side and you're not getting the power through, we can remove the cap here on top, you can see that has a nice thick rubber washer there to keep moisture from getting down and in, and we can use our manual override tool.

Just place that in and we're able to raise and lower it just like the manual jack. Now in some cases with these overrides you're just going to get sent a socket. The socket fits down on and then you have to use a ratchet handle. Well, if you don't have that handy it's pretty much useless. You can't turn the socket by hand, so I like that they incorporate the longer handle with it. It just reduces the amount of stuff you have to keep with you in the event you do have that failure. Now a measurement that's pretty important when deciding if this is going to be a right jack for you or not is going to be the measurement from your bracket or from our mounting surface here to the very top.

In some campers and things like that you'll have like a bed that will fold out of the front, and if it interferes, well it's not really a good fit.So to take that measurement we'll go right from there right up to here. We've 20-1/2", so as long as you don't have anything that comes down lower than that this is going to be a really good solution for you.The drop leg is going to have four holes. You'll see one, two, three, and our fourth one is here. This is going to be excellent to save a lot of the effort for the jack, where it won't have to cycle that entire time. The holes are 1-7/8" apart, so that's going to give us a total of 5-5/8" to drop.Another important set of measurements that we need to talk about with jacks is how low it will go and how high it will go.

We get questions about it quite a bit from different customers.Right now we've got it in its lowest position, with the exception of course of the drop leg being extended. Right now, right up here to our bracket we're at 14-5/8. So if we take that 5-5/8 off, we can go all the way down to 9" with it. Then we're going to extend it all the way and we'll get that measurement as well. Now with the jack fully extended and that drop leg extended, as you can see it's got plenty of lift to it. Right now the bracket is going to sit at about 34-1/8. So if we take that 5-5/8 off of that we're back down to 28-1/2, so 9" to 28-1/2", that gives us that travel that we're looking for. Overall I would say that you ought to be able to get this connected to about any vehicle that you want. With the two switches here on the front, one of course operates the jack. The second one turns our lights on and off. They're LED lights, so they're not going to draw a whole lot of power, and they have good brightness. It's not the brightest set of lights I've ever seen on a jack, but certainly not the dimmest, so I think it's going to fall right there in the middle of the range.Something I really like about this jack is how quiet it operates. A lot of times these can get really loud, it really sounds like the jack is just working as hard as it can to move anything, and that's just not the case on this one. It operates really nice, really smoothly. I don't think you're going to have any issues with it even if we do push it up closer to its maximum capacity. The overall construction of the jack is something that I really like. We're going to have a clear zinc finish on the inner tube and on our drop leg here, as well as our pin to hold our drop leg in.The outer tube here and our flange has a nice thick durable powder coat finish on it, and then the housing up here, this entire cover is one piece that comes down, so we don't have any areas up here that moisture can get in. Our cap is protected there.I really don't think you're going to run into any issues. Again, like I said, with working with customers there's really no problems with this jack. It just always works. It always does a good job.Something else I appreciate about the jack is that they built a fuse holder in-line, so if we have any issues, if there's any situations where we overload it, the fuse is going to pop. We can easily take that one out and put a new one in and just close that case back up. This is going to help protect both our jack and our vehicle in case we have any kind of shorts. To begin our installation process of course we need our old jack removed from the trailer, and we're going to take off that drop leg, use the pin we talked about earlier. I like to set this right down underneath, because in a lot of situations if you don't put that on now and you bolt your jack on there you can't get it back in, so I like to line it up at the same time.I'm going to drop this down and through, get the leg realigned there. We just want to turn the jack to where it aligns with the holes in the coupler, and we're going to reuse our existing hardware. Now if for some reason your hardware is damaged, maybe it's rounded off or something and you need to replace it, just be sure you replace it with at least a 3/8" bolt, and you want that to be a grade five.Once we've got those criteria met, I'm just going to thread these in. You can see we're using a flat washer there. Once we get those started, since these are 3/8th we'll be using a 9/16th to get them tightened down. I'm not going to over-tighten them. We've got a torque wrench we'll use after this just to get them torqued down appropriately. All right, now we're just going to plug into our testing power source here. It's going to fit into any normal seven-pull. It's really easy to use, so if your vehicle has a working seven-pull in the back you're going to be in good shape, and then we can test it out. Just allow it to take the weight and we'll take those jack stands out and it'll be ready for use.Overall, guys, I think this is going to be an excellent jack for most of the A-frame trailers out there, except for maybe the really, really large ones. I think it's something that you'll be very happy with and it should give you years of great service.

Purchased this jack to replace a manual jack we have on our cargo trailer. Swapping it out was easy-peasy! Had an issue getting power to the jack; called for assistance and had enthusiastic help from Nicole. Turns out it was our brand new truck that was the problem...a smart vehicle sometimes needs to be outsmarted in order to allow power to the 7-pin. Overall, very pleased with the purchase and the customer service. Highly recommend! 727294

After purchasing a small camper and using the hand crank jack two times that I would look for an electric jack to replace it. Many of the jacks cost more than I wanted to spend. Then I found "etrailer.com". The prices were reasonable. I ordered Item EJ-3520-BBX electric jack. I have had it for a year now and have used it many times. I truly a happy camper. It has saved me time and energy. My wife can operate it and has no trouble letting me fish while she breaks camp with no help at all. The follow up service is great. Check "etrailer.com" before you buy any where else. 566675

What a easy upgrade for your camper. I ordered and received in a few days. etrailer just does it right. Install was so easy, anyone can do it. No more cranking for me, push the button and like majic, you can take your trailer up or down. I also purchase the cover to keep the weather of the motor and controls. It is nice too. Thanks Lisa D for your great service. 496356

My electric trailer jack came at noon today. Got home from work at5:30 and had all hooked up and running in 25 minutes! Easy to install! Was worried about the motor head being too tight against propane bottle cover...but it fit perfectly!Runs super smooth so far. I put up with a hand crank tongue jack for far too long. Seems like a good product for a reasonable price!! 394253

Review from a similar 3.5K in Camper Jacks

I bought this jack after doing a lot of research. The conclusion I came to was that most of these electric jacks are basically the same design with a different name stamped on them. I like how this one has an inline fuse, a higher lift range, and an adjustable footplate. I read a lot of forums, Facebook pages and reviews on a variety of websites. Etrailer offered the best option for what I was looking for. This jack is well made. It's heavy and solid. It was super easy to install. If you can't install this, you probably shouldn't be pulling a trailer. It was literally 3 bolts and a ring terminal. The wire lead does not come with a ring terminal attached. You have to add your own, which is no big deal. It comes this way so you can cut the excess wire to fit your application. It also came with 3 washers and 3 star washers to ensure a good ground connection on the wiring. The light is super bright as well. Etrailer kept me up to date the whole way through the ordering and shipping process. This was my first purchase from them and it was a great experience. 438735

Would have to say 4.5 on the rating only because of the installation instructions. On installation instruction #4 it tells you how to assemble the hardware and then directs you to a figure above. This figure is nothing more than the plain jack. Then it tells you on #6 to position the fuse holder as close to the power source positive terminal as possible. The fuse holder comes in already attached to the jack adjacent to the jack control switches. Ease of installation other than above. Common sense will get anyone past those directions. Jack operation was perfect after installation. Test of jack showed it works as advertised and I can't wait to use it in the upcoming camping trip. Ordering, customer service and shipping/receiving was excellent. I was informed on the delivery date and status of shipment by ETrailer to whole time. Properly packaged and the unit came in in excellent shape with no defects. As you can see in the pictures it is a clean install and I added a very nice cover which was also sold through E-Trailer. Another nice product to finish a successful installation. 379431

Review from a similar 3.5K in Camper Jacks

Used it for about 5 dry camping trips last summer with my 24' toy hauler. Works fine, has plenty of power to lift the tongue off the trailer hitch even when it is somewhat bound to the hitch ball. Bought a cover to keep it covered and out of the high elevation sun. It sure saves a lot of manual labor fighting with the manual hitch crank. 730284

Review from a similar 3.5K in Camper Jacks

After four camping trips with a manual tounge jack, I decided to buy an electric one. My last camp site was 8 inches off level and that was enough for me. I installed the EJ-3520-BBX this afternoon. Everything worked fine except for a few tweaks. The lower a-frame hole for the tongue jack was too small so I had to use a sanding drum on a drill to open it up so it would fit. Not a big deal to me but might have been for someone non-mechanical. Not sure if that was a trailer problem or a non-standard tube diameter. The jack light (three LED's mounted on a circuit board) under the jack screw and motor cover had become completely dislodged from its slotted mount and was just floating around in the plastic housing. I took the cover off, re-mounted it and used stainless washers under the cover screws to prevent them from digging into the plastic when I put the cover back on. The jack works as advertised, and even picked up the rear of my Ram 2500 Cummins several inches to facilitate putting my Blue Ox WDH sway bars on. The tongue weight of my trailer is 650 lbs so I'm guessing it picked up well over 1500 lbs. I found an old dry bag and it fits perfectly over the jack to protect it from the weather. So far I am pleased with it but wished the manufacturer had used and automotive type spade fuse instead of the antiquated tubular glass fuse. Only time will tell as to the durability and longevity of this product but I am optimistic and there is a manual crank included if something goes down. A tick over a hundred bucks can save one a lot of aggrevation! 443807

Comments
Generally, I am happy with the product it has adequate power to lift my 900 lb. tounge weight plus lift the rear of my Ram 2500 to facilitate installing the spring bars of my Blue Ox WDH. However, what I dislike about the jack is the fact that there is no limit switch either up or down. It is possible to over-extend or collapse the jack when that happens, you can hear the gears slip a tooth which Im sure, over time, will incapacitate the jack.

The Electric Jack w/ Footplate part # EJ-3527-BBX is what I recommend you use to replace your old hydraulic a-frame trailer tongue jack. This will be a great option for the old hydraulic tongue jacks because it simply plugs into a 7-way on vehicle without any additional wiring required. The three hole pattern is an industry standard mounting pattern so you don't have to worry about this either.

  • Troubleshooting Ram 3,500 lb Trailer Tongue Jack Working Intermittently
I reached out to my contact at Ram and he said that their electric jacks, like part # EJ-3520-BBX, # EJ-3520-WBX, or # EJ-3527-BBX have one fuse and it is located on the black wire where it enters the housing. From what you described I believe your problem is a bad ground. These jacks ground through the mounting hardware so if the connection isn't solid and constant it can cause the issues you are having. What my contact recommended doing was taking some of the paint off of the trailer...

  • Troubleshooting Electric Trailer Jack with 7-Way Plug That Does Not Function Consistently
An electric A-frame tongue jack like # EJ-3527-BBX or # 3370093500 that has a pre-wired 7-way plug will rely on the ground and +12V contacts within that plug to deliver operating power. Jacks may not function with less than 12 volts. Those contacts are located, respectively, at the 5:00 and 11:00 positions on the plug as you look at it. Please refer to the linked photo. You might try an aerosol electrical contact cleaner like Caig De-Oxit to see if that restores reliable operation. I...

  • Electric Replacement for Jayco Feather Lite with Hydraulic A-Frame Trailer Tongue Jack
I do have an option but we do not carry hydraulic a-frame trailer tongue jacks. The best option we can offer to replace this is an electric a-frame trailer tongue jack, the Ram Electric Jack part # EJ-3520-BBX or part # EJ-3527-BBX. If you have a battery on your trailer you can pull power from then the former is the best option but if not the latter which pulls power from the vehicle battery is the best option.
