Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

  • How to Determine Correct Leaf Springs For 2018 Jayco Travel Trailer
Hi Austin, I can help you determine the right replacement double-eye leaf springs for your 2018 Jayco trailer, though we don't have any way of knowing what specific ones you need. It's pretty easy though, as all you need to do is measure your current leaf springs from center-to-center of the spring eyes, and you also need to know the weight rating of your axle. Based on its weight, your 174BH is likely to have a 3,500 lb axle, though you'll want to double check just to be sure. Leaf springs...

  • Limited Tire Clearance with Stock Tire Size on a 2006 Forest River Cherokee 27Q
We recommend having a minimum of 3" between the top of the tire and bottom of the fender in order to allow for proper suspension travel. However, based on the photo you sent I believe you need new leaf springs as the ones you have appear to be almost completely flat. This has then compromised your tire clearance. The flattened leaf springs could either be a result of overloading the trailer or just general wear. In order to replace them you would need to know your axle capacity and the...

  • Determining Correct Length Replacement Leaf Spring
Trailer leaf springs can grow longer after many years of use. A new springs that measures 25-1/4-inches long like # e57SR could easily measure 25-1/2-inches after years in service on a trailer. Springs can lengthen as much as 3/4 of an inch. If your old spring measured 25-1/2 you can safely conclude that it is actually a 25-1/4-inch. Our main leaf spring page is linked for you. Just click on your dimension and axle weight rating to see suitable options. Generally you want no less than...

  • Choosing the Correct Replacement Leaf Springs for a Weekend Warrior Toy Hauler
In order to choose the correct replacement leaf springs for a trailer you'll need to know both the unloaded length and axle capacity. The number of springs is not relevant so long as you choose a set that matches the axle capacity as springs can have different thicknesses therefore different weight capacities not necessarily dependent on the number of leaves. A few other things to keep in mind is that leaf springs can lengthen over time and you need to replace them in pairs. I have attached...

  • How to Determine the Correct Axle Position When Building a Trailer
The 60/40 axle placement formula is a great starting point and does take into account the tongue of the trailer from where the trailer sits on the hitch ball. Please keep in mind that this is a very basic formula or estimate for axle placement. For a much more accurate way to determine the correct axle placement for your trailer, take a look at the formula that I have included for you. This formula also takes the length of the trailer tongue into consideration.

  • What Rating Should be Used to Pick Out Trailer Leaf Springs
Hey Howard, you would want to go with leaf springs that match the axle rating of your trailer as that's how the springs are typically rated. So for example, the leaf spring part # e57SR would be the correct rating as it was designed for 4,000 lb axles and also has a very standard length of 25-1/4 inches.

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for 2017 Grand Design Imagine 2600RB
Thank you for providing that information. Leaf springs like the ones you have now typically match the axle capacity on your trailer. Although adding leaf springs with a slightly higher capacity won't hurt, it also is not necessary. Based on the leaf springs and and other information I'm sure you have 3,500 lb axles. Your standard diameter for this capacity would be 2-3/8". In addition to the capacity you want the eye to eye length to match, so we are looking at 25-1/4" long leaf springs. I...

  • Can A 25-1/4" Leaf Spring Be Replaced With A 26" Leaf Spring?
Hello Mark, thanks for reaching out. When replacing leaf springs, it is important the new springs are identical in length to the old ones. There is a small amount of tolerance, like 1/2" or less, but any more than this can throw the suspension off center like you are describing. It sounds like the 2" springs are just too long for your trailer and will need to be replaced. I see that you ordered the # e22YR springs which are for a 4,000 lb axle. We do offer a 25-1/4" spring for a 4,000...

The pages I linked for you display all types of suspension parts and double-eye leaf springs. • Replacement Leaf Springs for a 2013 Fleetwood Express
For your 2013 Fleetwood Express, the correct replacement is most likely the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring part # e54SR. In order to confirm this you will need to take a quick measurement of the leaf spring you have now. It should be around 26" long (loaded) from the center of each eyelet and if that is the case then the above is what you need. The leaf springs on a trailer will lengthen over time as they wear which is why the replacements will be shorter than what you have now. The pair of...

  • Replacement Double Eye Spring Recommendation for 1995 EZ Loader Trailer with 3,650 lb Axle
Thank you for the information. As long as the spring is of the correct weight rating and size, the number of leaves in a spring (spring pack thickness) isn't important. This is especially true because all springs should be replaced at the same time to maintain even support from the trailer. A close option is the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long, part # e57SR. This spring has just a slightly higher capacity, at 2,000 lbs, so it may stiffen up your ride...

  • Cushioned Equalizer Upgrade Recommendation for 2012 Forest River Work and Play
Mark, the Dexter EZ Flex part # K71-652-00 can be used to replace your # TREQ310 and is cushioned like you are wanting. The 25-1/4 inch leaf spring size is very common but you didn't mention what axle capacity you have so if you needed a 5k spring you'd part # e44sr, 4k axle part # e57SR, or 6k axle part # e34SR. Keep in mind going with a little higher of a capacity than needed is perfectly fine.

For hub drums to convert to a 6 lug wheel you'd want the part # 84656UC3-EZ which is correct for 3,500 lb axles so that you could install a tire and wheel in the size of 225/75R15 Load Range D like the # AM32664.

Thank you for the photo! I was able to use the serial number on your axle to determine which is the correct replacement leaf spring for your trailer. For this, you are going to want to use the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e57SR. The measurement you provided of 26" long is correct but the leaf spring needs to be measured while unloaded as it will lengthen while a load is present. I then recommend using the 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 7,000-lb Trailer Axles - 24-7/8" Long # e64SR which will work well with the spacing of your hangers at 29-1/2 inches on center which will put your axles at 33-1/2 inches on center. The 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,500-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e27SR will be the closest fit for your 3750 lb axle. Having leaf springs rated slightly higher is normal because you will be limited in capacity by the weakest component on your trailer and normally you want that to be your axle. These springs will not be too strong for that axle as to cause too firm a ride.

Hey John, You definitely weren't lying about those springs being flattened out. With them being flattened out they are going to be a bit wider so you will need a shorter eye-to-eye measurement than 26-1/4". My only concern is that the # e54SR at 25-1/8" is going to be a bit too short and have your shackle straps sit out too far, which will eventually lead to a bind up. If this was a trailer we had in the shop I'd pull a few sizes and see what worked the best. Since we don't have that...

  • Should Leaf Spring Capacity Match Trailer Weight or Axle Weight for Best Ride Comfort
You are indeed right to think this way. When picking out the appropriate leaf springs for your custom built trailer you will want to choose them based on what the actual loaded weight of the trailer will be. Just make sure that the leaf springs have a combined weight capacity that matches or exceeds (within reason) the 1,200 pound max weight of your trailer. Matching the leaf springs to the 5,000 pound axle you plan on using will give you an awfully rough ride with a 1,200 pound trailer....
