Should Leaf Spring Capacity Match Trailer Weight or Axle Weight for Best Ride Comfort

Question:
I am building a custom trailer which will have a smoker mounted to it. Total weight of frame, cargo, and smoker should be between 1000-1200 lbs - never more than this. I am cutting down a recycled 5000 lb axle but think the leaf springs on it would be way too strong. I am thinking of going with 690 lb to 750 lb leaf springs as long as i can get 28-29 to make it pull and ride better. am i right to think this way????

You are indeed right to think this way. When picking out the appropriate leaf springs for your custom built trailer you will want to choose them based on what the actual loaded weight of the trailer will be. Just make sure that the leaf springs have a combined weight capacity that matches or exceeds (within reason) the 1,200 pound max weight of your trailer.
Matching the leaf springs to the 5,000 pound axle you plan on using will give you an awfully rough ride with a 1,200 pound trailer.

I have also included a couple articles on trailer axle placement and leaf spring suspension that you might find helpful as you design and build your trailer. The correct length of the leaf springs will be dependent on your hanger spacing. If you happen to know this I will be happy to see if we have an option that fits both the needed length and capacity.

i have a trailer frame and boat with a combined weight of 700 lb , what size springs should i put under it?
