Can I Use A 4,000 lb Leaf Spring For A 3,500 lb Axle?

Hello I am considering using this leaf spring to replace mine that I’m sure are 27 years old, I bought a 16 foot trailer built in ‘99. My axles are rated for 3,500 lbs., will I expect any bounce going up to this rated leaf spring? My eye to eye measurement is 25.5 inches and from what I’ve read on most QandA’s, a 25.25 inch leaf spring is my go to. I’m doing an axle replacement thus all the hardware is going to be replaced, if you may kindly share any torque specs recommended when changing out U-bolts, shackle bolts, and equalizers. Thanks much!

Hello Alfredo, thanks for reaching out. You are on the right track with the 25-1/4" long 4,000 lb leaf spring part # e57SR. That sounds like exactly what you need size and capacity-wise. I wouldn't worry about any excessive bounce with those. If anything, it would bounce less since the spring will be a bit stiffer than what you had before. It's not enough of a jump to make the ride too stiff though, especially if you are loading the trailer up with gear. I think its a good choice.
For U-bolts you'll need the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit # CE23002. For these you will want to torque them to between 45 and 75 ft-lbs.
The shackle and equalizer bolts do not have a torque rating. You don't want them too tight or else they will have difficulty moving and that could bind up your suspensions. Simply tighten them down until they are good and tight but still allow the equalizer and shackles to move.
Are you looking for a new shackle kit and equalizer too? We can definitely provide those, I will just need to know the dimensions of the current shackles and equalizer. Those are measured from center hole to center hole. Equalizer is measured hole to hole across, then measure the height from that center line to the center of the top hole.
Shoot me those dimensions when you get a chance and I'm happy to make some recommendations.

Alfredo, I have a 14' box trailer used to carry dirtbikes. I pull the trailer down a lot of washboard dirt roads. The trailer is never overloaded. I have had the 3,500' springs break every few years. I chose to upgrade to 4,000' springs to hopefully avoid this. I haven't noticed any difference in the way the trailer ride.

With the expert help from E Trailer, I handed their entire retrofit package over to my mechanics, and they handed me back a like new ride and suspension. I have a small commercial carpentry business, and there are often times the decision to have it, but not need it rather than not throwing it in with the rest of the materials and equipment.
