What Rating Should be Used to Pick Out Trailer Leaf Springs

Published 09/25/2024

Question:

I have a two axle 1986 closed Haulmark trailer that I’m considering to replace the springs. When considering the spring load rating, should I be ordering springs based upon usual load weight or should the springs be ordered such as to distribute the weight? For example, say my total load weight is 4000 lbs. should I order each spring with a 4000 lb weight rating or springs rated as 4000 lbs divided by the number of springs?

Hey Howard, you would want to go with leaf springs that match the axle rating of your trailer as that's how the springs are typically rated. So for example, the leaf spring part # e57SR would be the correct rating as it was designed for 4,000 lb axles and also has a very standard length of 25-1/4 inches.

My question again is: Would I need all springs to be rated at 4000 lbs or would the required spring rating be 4000 lbs divided by the number of springs?

@HowardB springs are rated per axle so in pairs. So a 4k spring would technically be 2k per spring.

@JamesonC so, if I were to order product e22YR I would receive two 4000 lb springs?

@HowardB you would order a single spring. You'd need to order a quantity of 2 if you need 2.
