Can I Use 4,000 lbs Springs to Replace 3,500 lbs Leaf Springs?

Updated 12/02/2025 | Published 11/04/2025

Question:

Question regarding e57SR 4,000Lb leaf spring. Id like to know if these are a compatible spring for my trailer. Trailer is 2022 Jayco Jayfeather with dual Dexter 3500lb axles. In May of 2024, after finding the original springs flat, I replaced them with e54SR 3500lb springs, LC279687 Equalizers and wetbolt kit upon etrailers recommendation. Those replacements are now flat after about 10k miles. I have weighed the trailer several times over the last year and Im always within the max GVWR of 7250lbs. I would like to find a slightly more robust spring than the 3500lb that is compatible with my axles and equalizers without getting too stiff. Thank you.

Hey Jason, welcome back! The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles item # e57SR is the same length so it would definitely work. Bumping up an extra 500 lbs per spring is definitely going to help with the longevity of your suspension. That increase in capacity along with you dropping down a leaf won't make your suspension stiff. The Dexter item # DX35CR would be a better replacement option though. Dexter's leaf springs are a higher quality and will last longer.

Please note that it is recommended to replace your suspension hardware item # MR46ZR, and your u-bolts item # CE23002 when you replace your springs. The bolts are only designed to be torqued down once.

What kind of roads are your traveling on? That seems awfully fast to wear out a set of springs traveling on highways.

Hey Jason, how did things go after switching to the 4,000‑lb springs on your Jayco Jayfeather? Did the new setup improve the ride and hold up better on your trips? Your update could really help others dealing with worn‑out leaf springs.

@JerredH I haven't made the switch yet, but will be doing it based on your recommendations. Likely won't happen for a couple months. Need some warmer weather before I tackle that job!
