If you have a seasonal boat or a snowmobile trailer that's occassionally in lakes or on heavily treated salt roads, these are the brakes for you. The galvanized backing plates. stainless steel springs, and zinc-plated wheel cylinder all provide excellent rust and corrosion resistance so your trailer will be ready to tackle the season.
Pro Tip: If your trailer is near saltwater year-round, you may want to look into the increasing levels of corrosion protection that e-coat, Dacromet, and stainless steel components can provide.
If you often find yourself making hard and frequent stops, these brakes may be for you. The semi-metallic brake pads in these Demco brakes are built to last longer and produce less dust than organic brake pads. They're also bolstered to the brake shoes with rivets, which makes the pads less likely to crumble or warp over the course of their lifetime.
The more miles you put on your trailer, the more your brake pads will wear down. As they lose contact with the drum, stopping distances get longer and longer. To keep your brakes working great, it's important to adjust them pretty routinely. For this job, grab a floor jack and either a brake adjustment tool (sold separately) or just a standard flathead screwdriver.
Jack up your trailer enough to get the wheel(s) off the ground. Remove the adjuster plugs from the backing plate on the brake, and insert the flat end of the tool through the back of the assembly.
Push in on the star gear and lift it up. Keep doing this until the brake pads catch on your brake drum. When you can't spin your wheel by hand anymore, back the gear off by about 10 clicks (push down on the star gear). Does the wheel now spin freely (even if it sounds like the brake pads drag slightly on the drum)? Great! Then you're all done with that one and ready to adjust the rest.
Once you get these assemblies installed, and your lines flushed with fresh fluid, you'll need to break in these brakes. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.
Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

Well they last about two to three years max in saltwater even with fresh water wash down. The pads last just fine and braking performance is great. Wish they hardware and other components were more corrosive resistant.
I did have a question. I ordered the setup for 6-7k axel but I found out my boat setup is probably closer to 4K. The surge controller said it was a 6.6k surge controller and that’s why I went with the heavier brake set up.
Will this be an issue at all as long as they fit? Or do I need to send them back for the smaller weight class.

It has been a full year and many miles of trailering my boat and the brakes still work great. I have manually tightened them twice so I know they are taking wear and tear of of my truck brakes.

Perfect replacement on my 3500lb axle boat trailer, 1996 Trailrite. Brakes bolted right up. Galvanized finish was complete, and well done. These assemblies appear as if they will last for many many years over the original factory brakes. Outstanding price point. Wanted to go to electric disk, however I'm very happy with these replacement brakes, and for the price and stopping power I'm very happy. I highly recommend. Shipping time was rapid, and FREE. With the help of a friend, replacing these brakes, actuator, and bleeding the system was about 3 hours work. Well worth it!
Installed on our boat trailer, fit was excellent and worked great last year. Have yet to tow the boat but will shortly and expect the same great operation, I wish they were self adjusting but plan on making any adjustments prior to vacation. Great service as always from etrailer.
I needed brakes shoes, bearings, seals, piston and drums i.e. a complete rebuild on my boat trailer. I called etrailer to place the order. I was lucky enough to get Stacy to assist in getting everything I needed. Stacy was not only very knowledgeable but also enjoyable to work with. She was also patient with me as I had to put her on hold to get more information that I forgot to get before the call. She double checked all my needed items before placing the order.. She even took a minute for some small talk as we waited for the order to log. I've not had customer service like this in quite some time. After the order was placed, i realized that I made another measurement error and had to change the order.
I called Stacy back and she updated the order and made the correction on the amount I owed... I actually saved a few bucks.

A little mixup in the order but etrailer customer service was all over it and made things right. Parts were of good quality. I will use etrailer again.
Delivered with left side plunger clevis laying g in bottom of box, had to reassemble. Missing grease seals I ordered but etrailer was good about it and sent me another pair. Things happen and I still recommend them.

I'm not sure what happened when you guys were packing this order, I received two right side brake kit's (the correct parts), and two right side free-backing brake kits! Now, I can use a standard and a free backing kit per side of the trailer, but my trailer doesn't have 4 right side wheels. It only has two on each side.
Unfortunately, I'm in a time crunch and can't afford to wait for 2 way return shipping, so I bought two left handed wheel cylinders locally, and swapped the hardware on 1 standard and 1 free-backing kit. I guess I'll put the free backing kits on the rear axle, and the standard kits on the front axle.
I'm curious though, Do you guys get alot of folks using trailers with 4 right side wheels?
I kinda don't know what to do with the poor/average/excellent stars thing. On one hand, you guys were super fast and quality seems good, but on the other hand, my trailer has wheels on both sides.

I cant say that we do, Ken! I am so sorry that we sent the wrong brakes! I also want to mention mixing free backing and standard breaks will cause the breaking to be uneven and is dangerous! I am going to look into this for you and see what we can do to make it right.
