How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I purchased this jack because it is the exact same model as the jack installed on the trailer at the factory. I have attached a photo of the one I removed. I had the trailer power washed and the spray damaged the membrane that covered the three switches that operate the jack. The resulting exposure damaged the switches which could not be repaired. Not the best design in my opinion.

The Smart Jack has taken to just clicking when the down arrow is pressed. I have to break out the crank handle to lower the tongue of the trailer. If I have to replace it AGAIN it will not be a Lippert jack. Totally dissatisfied!

We have reached out to Lippert about the switch on the jack. It sounds like the screw or the motor on the jack is damaged as the switch is working and the motor is not. If it is within a year old it is covered under warranty however if not it is time to buy a new one.

ordered overnight and got in a timely f ashion!!!

by:

Gamechanger, so much better than a hand crank

I am replacing my 2 year old Smart Jack. The old one broke. The "buttons" on the Smart Jack are flush and difficult to press sometimes. My biggest complaint is that the plastic covering the "buttons" fade in only 2 years. My wife is sewing a cover to protect it from the sun. I do give 5 GOLD STARS to etrailer.com. Your website is easy to navigate and there is a generous amount of infomation and video on your products.

by:

I own two of these jacks and they've worked well for the most part. The nice feature is the ability to press a combination of buttons and it will either retract or rise to a pre set height without you having to hold down the button, which is very convenient and allows you to hook up other parts of the trailer while it is working.

The downside is one of the jacks immediately developed a crack in the top of it. There was a recall on this jack where a crack would happen and water intrusion would cause the jack to extend when you are driving....not good. My jack wasn't part of the recall, but likely they really didn't fix the problem, so it still happens on some units. I did request a warranty repair and after many back and forth questions about my trailer, they would repair it, but the shipping expense was on me. Now shipping is going to add up to 1/3 or more of the item cost and I also won't have a jack for a little bit, so I'm just going to risk it.

So it is a nice product because the jack has some unique features, however the known issue of the cracking of the unit is kind of annoying.

by:

This jack has plenty of power for raising and lowering my 10,000 lbs camper.
The automatic features are annoying and get in the way of easy operation. The memory setting is useless because it never works. The automatic down works ok.
I regret buying this model and intend to purchase a simple up/down one in the future.
This is the model jack that came standard with my grand design reflection TT. The one that came with the unit new was replaced by recall. The replacement lasted 2 seasons
and cracked causing water to ruin the electrics. I wanted to keep everything stock so purchased the third. I also keep a cover on it to protect that cheap plastic on the controls. I won't hate to see this one go and join his two brothers in jack heaven.
etrailer is great to deal with and I will do business with them in the future.

by:

Kept draining battery and could not work off of the truck when plugged in. Trailer customer service couldn't be reached by phone and never returned email request for help.

by:

Easy to install. Some nice improvements over the older model.

by:

I ordered a few things that day from some other companies and this is the only thing that has made it to me. Very happy with Etrailers being so fast to get my products to me. And it was very easy to instal.

by:

Smart Jack arrived in just a couple days and looks great. Will install later do to weather but expect it will work great.

by:

Just what I needed to keep my arm from getting cramps from winding the stupid crank!

by:

Very easy to install and wire.

by:

Always fast shipping and exactly as des cribed!

  • Recommended 3500lb A-Frame Camper Jack with Limit Switches
The Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589 is the one I recommend for you. This is one of the first jacks with intelligence built in. It features a memory so that you can store your hitch height for your truck and recall it. It also has an auto retract feature to retract the jack completely without having to hold the switch until the jack retracts fully.

  • Replacement Powered Jack Recommendation for Keystone Springdale with Broken Jack
Since nearly all A-frame trailer jacks don't have replacement motors your best option will be to replace the entire jack. The LIppert # LC643589 Smart Jack is a good choice. It has all the features of other powered tongue jacks but also can be set to remember the uncoupled height and hitched height. No more cranking and waiting for the jack to get to the right height. I have included some demo links.

  • Testing Power to A-Frame Trailer Jack and Recommended Replacement For Failed Motor
It sounds as if the motor has failed on your tongue jack. You can verify by using a Test Light # PTW2993 on the wiring that runs to the motor. If you can confirm that you are getting power to the motor and all the wiring connections are tight then it must be a bad motor. I recommend replacing it with a Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589. This jack has built in memory features as well as an auto retract feature. So you will be able to set your jack to remember your truck...

  • Best Electric Trailer Jack for Use with a 2017 Keystone Bullet 243BHS
You will want to find a jack that can at least lift the weight of your fully loaded trailer. Since the Tongue Weight (TW) of a trailer should be between 10-15% of the weight of your trailer, we can do a little math to figure out what would be best. I found that your 2017 Keystone Bullet 243BHS has a dry weight of 4,685 lbs and can carry up to 1,815 lbs meaning that the most your trailer will weigh is 6,500 lbs. This will put your TW at 650 lbs - 975 lbs. I recommend going with a jack...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Jack that is Slow to Rise and Lower
It could be a few things that caused your jack to slow down like you mentioned. I'd first check the condition of the trailer battery as that's most likely it. If the battery is weak or not fully charged the jack won't operate like it should. Also check to make sure the wiring of the jack is solidly connected to the battery as well as the ground. The jack grounds through the mounting hardware so make sure the mount is clean and the main ground strap of the trailer wiring is connected to...

  • Troubleshooting A Lippert Smart Electric Trailer Jack That Won't Function
If the fuse has been replaced and you've confirmed that you have a full 12 volts going to the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589 then the jack is most have some sort of wire damage internally or the circuit board is fried. Unfortunately, Lippert doesn't give you the ability to replace any parts on these jacks and essentially requires you to completely replace the jack whenever anything goes out. • Troubleshooting A Lippert Smart Jack That Will Not Retract
The Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack w/ Footplate # LC643589 doesn't really give you much of an option when it comes to troubleshooting so I recommend first checking that it's getting 12 volts with a multimeter # PT89ZR. The only other thing you can do from there is disassemble the head and see if maybe there's a loose connection with the button board. Lippert unfortunately doesn't offer replacement parts for this jack so if anything goes wrong it's a complete replacement every...

  • Are The Stickers On The Side Of The Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack Replaceable
The promo stickers on the sides of the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack w/ Footplate # LC643589 are not a replaceable part. You can however use a cover like Ultra-Fab Protective Cover for Electric A-Frame Jacks # UF38-944020 to prevent any more weathering to the stickers or other parts of the jack head going forward. If you know anyone with a Cricut machine then you could have them make you a custom wrap for your jack head to match the trailer as well.

  • Can You Grease The Gears Of A Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack
spoke to my contact at Lippert and they confirmed that the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589 does not require any grease maintenance. Therefore they didn't include a grease zerk, what you can do is use a spray lithium grease and spray up the inner leg of the jack to try and grease all of the moving parts. You might get lucky and hit where it seems to be needing lubrication.

  • Lippert Smart Jack Extends On Its Own
It sounds like water has got into the circuit board on your Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack part # LC643589 as this is a common issue that causes the jack to raise and lower on its own. There was a recall for this and it sounds like you have a pre-recall version but in order to confirm you can look on the back of the jack for a sticker on the stem with a serial number. • Smart Jack Won't Go Up or Down
I'm sorry the folks at the establishment you purchased the Lippert Smart Jack # LC643589 from were unable to help you. I'm not sure what they told you to do, but what the manufacturer has told us regarding this jack is if it is not operating up or down is to first check the grounded 12 volt power supply it is wired to. That is basically the issue 99% of the time when this occurs. Should that not remedy the problem, remove the fuse in the power wire for 15 minutes which will reset it.
