Video Transcript for Review of Deka Wiring - 16-14 Gauge Butt Connectors - DW05744-5

Jeff Hello everybody this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Deka blue butt connectors for the 16-14 gauge size wire and this is for a quantity of five connectors. Now these blue butt connectors will join two lengths of 16 gauge or 14 gauge sized wire and it will insulate the connection with the heat shrinkable nylon for adjustability and durability. Now the blue color on this will indicate the size wire this connector will fit. This one will fit the 16-14 gauge sized wire. And if you forget what color size fits what, it is also stamped on here.

16-14 AWG. Now to install the two wires, what you'll want to do is take your two wires that you're going to connect together and you'll strip off about a quarter of an inch of insulation on each end of the wire. Take your first wire, stick it into this end right here, and push it all the way until it stops. Basically there's a metal casing right there in the middle and in the very center is a little stopper. So when you push the wire in it'll stop and that should put that in the metal casing.

Once you make sure that the stripped portion is under the metal casing, take your crimper, crimp it all the way down until you make a good connection. And then you'll do the same with the second wire. Take the stripped end, stick it all the way in until it goes no further. Make sure it's under the metal or the stripped portion is under that metal casing. And then use your crimper and crimp that side down.

With both of them crimped, then what you'll wanna do is just tug on them, hold both wires and just tug on them. Make sure you have a good connection. Once that's good then what you'll do is get a heat source, like a heat gun, and then just apply heat over this insulation and it will cause this nylon insulation to shrink and it will completely seal around your connection and prevent the elements from causing a problem with your connection. Now this part is for a quantity of five connectors. We do also sell it as a single connector, its part number DWO5744-1.

Or as a ten pack which is part number DWO5744-10. But that should do it for the review on the Deka blue butt connectors for the 16-14 gauge size wire for a quantity of five..

Quality heat-shrink butt connectors. Easy to install with the right torch and one year later they are still working well.

I would like to really thank the team at etrailer for making my order correct. George, Amy and Carol all worked well with communication with me when there was a small issue with the amount of connectors I ordered. They made things right and I have nothing but appreciation for their work and attention to detail to help me out. Thank you again and I will be doing business again!! A+

by:

made the trailer light installation very easy to install by removing the old light and install the new led light so using these butt connectors made it easy and painless. Also they were not badly priced so one stop shopping allowed me to order them with my new lights...

Comments
Everything is working perfect and thank you for the follow up. I will be buying more when the time comes that I need something you carry and I recommend you to all of my friends and colleagues,

I have found that the 16-14 Gauge Deka Heat aren't quite as good as their larger 12-10 Gauge counterparts. They still work very well, but the heat shrink shielding is a bit thinner and seems to split easier when making a crimp, and had experiences where the connecter wouldn't grab a 16-gauge wire on the first try. All total I've had an approximate 20% failure rate with this gauge connecter which I feel is a bit high considering their price point. I will use them again in wet use applications, but would like to see some improvements.

Comments
No additional failures once installed after one year.

Great customer service. Prices are good.

Great, brand name products and some hard to find LED side marker lights. Refurbished an old EZ Loader boat trailer for carrying kayaks. Old incandescent lights were rotted off of the frame and the side marker lights in the fiberglass fenders were inside rubber grommets that were dry rotted. Etrailer had all the replacement lights, available in LED, and beat the price of any other option. Quality products. Delivered in 2 days under a free shipping promo. Etrailer is saved to my favorites for any trailer needs. Pic of the Yak project attached. New tail, fender and side marker LEDs!

I installed the pop and lock on my 2017 Honda Ridgeline. It was easy to install and it is wired to remotely open or use a key. It has worked without any issues. I'm very satisfied.

I wired the Pop & Lock to open remotely and it has worked every time. I used a different approach than what the Utube video had demonstrated.

My order was simple, some heat shrink and a few heat shrink butt connectors, no surprise that what I ordered is what was sent. The surprise I did get it how fast the order was processed and shipped. Shipping throughout the country right now is hit or miss- I’ve got an order from a major U.S. distributor for some simple tools, placed 2 weeks ago and still being “processed”...this order with etrailer was like 4 days, including a weekend, from when I clicked submit til it was in my mailbox. That’s outstanding! Thank you!

by:

Quality products...excellent follow up to solve problems in shipping ,as a lens was cracked in box when I received shipment...an email and pic to etrailer and replacement was in mailbox in two days!!!...small problem with license bracket LP10sb, very good quality for price but mount holes had to b redrilled higher to fit properly with light # STL9rb...overall great service and quality products ...about to order more parts after this review!!!...twisty

by:

Easy to use fasteners. Would purchase this again.

by:

Lights are Bright and easy to install. I completed the job in 20min. The Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors made a nice water tight seal. Appreciate the prompt shipment of my order

by:

Works perfectly as installed from the video instructions on my 2016 Chevy Colorado. More than pleased with Etrailer.....

I purchased electronic trailer breaks for my camper. These breaks are an excellent product at a great price. The tutorials that etrailer offers are incredibly helpful and a superb resource. Their customer service is also spot on. When it comes time to work on my boat trailer I know where I'll be going for parts and/or help.

by:

Worked perfectly. I used them to wire in new LED boat trailer lights and wanted the shrink wrap effect to keep out water.

by:

It’s just a satisfactory product. The vinyl shrink connector did shrunk after being heated but it didn’t shrink tight enough. Only time will tell if I will have corrosion in the connected wires when I start launching my jet ski trailer again. My jet ski and trailer has been stored since the pandemic.

by:

Just received my order of new backing plate assemblies and some misc small parts. Ordered on line late Sunday night, confirmed I had ordered the right parts Monday morning before shipment went out. Customer service by phone was superb and the gal I talked with was perfect. Shipment was on my porch Friday afternoon. I did open box and inspect shipment that arrived completely intact/good shape and all looked good at this point. Not sure when will get to the brakes on the trailer but will post again when the job is done. So far nothing but good to say about Etrailer.com. Regards, John.

by:

Order arrived very quickly. Placed on Friday, arrived on Tuesday from Mo to Pa. Items were packed well and arrived in good condition. Upon initial inspection all items appear of good quality. Ordered tires, brakes with backing plates, hubs ,seals and grease. Haven't installed any items yet, but I am sure I will have no issues. Free shipping is a plus. Additionally unlike other free shipping offers that are out on the back burner for a week, order was processed and shipped promptly. I have recommended etrailer to friends and would highly recommend them to anyone.

TOOK MY TRAILER ON A TRIP OUT WEST AND BRAKES WORKED PERFECT. THANKS ETRAILER!

by:

eTrailer is my go-to for boat trailer parts and I've always had a great experience using them. Everything works as anticipated. These connectors did the trick!

by:

Had to buy an extra at local auto parts store. Could not get wires to stay in connector long enough to crimp properly.

by:

Used these connectors for a lawnscaping trailer lights that sits outside. Shouldn't have any issues with weather. Easy installation and used a heat gun for the heat shrink ends.

by:

Does what it's supposed to, but pay attention to wire size when ordering, as some trailers have larger wires than 16014 gauge for their brakes

by:

etrailer has always been a pleasure to do business with. The products are easily found on the site. The product offering is broad. The information and videos about product application and use are terrific. Shipping is always on time. I have three trailers and shop here several times a year at etrailer.

by:

Good connectors and I haven't any problem with my trailer wiring. They have been on my trailer since 07/17.

by:

Worked as expected.

  • Troubleshooting Roof Vent Fan Wiring On a 1997 Shadow Cruiser Slide In Camper
You may be able to find the short in your wiring, as I was unable to find a wiring schematic available for your 1997 Shadow Cruiser. This is something that is unfortunately normal with these older campers as the records are often when manufactures are changed. I always start by checking the connections at the roof level for the fan. As this is the area where water might get to the connectors the easiest it makes a good place to start your search. You want to check for any exposed wires...

  • How To Wire A 4-Way On a Trailer With 5 Wires
I would love to help but the only way for certain to be sure you are connecting the correct wires together is to test for function. In order to do this for the trailer you will need to apply 12 volt power to each wire to see which circuit this illuminates. This is the only true way to determine the correct functions as trailer manufactures can use different color wires sometimes and the same can be said for the last person to wire the trailer. Please note when attaching two wires you really...

  • Should Butt Connectors On a Boat Trailer be Replaced with Heat Shrink and Solder
I assume you are referring to butt connectors and if that is the case then these can very well be the cause of your issue as they can trap corrosion over time and cause problems. If you test for power on the wire going into the connector and then coming out, that should then let you know if power is passing through the butt connector. If it is not then I prefer to solder and heat shrink wires together as this creates the best bond but we also have heat shrink butt connectors like part #...

Whenever we see lighting issues it usually stems from a bad ground or a short somewhere. This can be the result of a bad 7-Way connector or wiring. You will be fine to use some butt connectors like the Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connector # DW05744-5 for 16 to 14 gauge, # DW05745-5 for 12 to 10 gauge, or # DW05743-5 for 22 to 18 gauge to repair your 7-way. • Trailer Wiring Harness Installation on 2015 Acura MDX
I'm sorry that happened. According to Tekonsha, they haven't changed the plug used on their 4 pole trailer connectors in many years, so I suppose it's possible that either the drain hole diameter might not be consistent across the vehicle line or there might be another larger opening in the floor pan. In order to determine if a breakaway system is required on your trailer you will need to contact your local DMV. This will vary from state to state.
