Optronics STL16/17 Series LED Combination Marine Tail Light Measurements

Sealed, Waterproof Trailer Light

The waterproof construction of these lights make them ideal for use on trailers that may be submerged, like a boat trailer. Each circuit board is sealed, which means that water will not damage the diodes or circuit board.

Combination Lights for Trailers Over 80" Wide

Flatbed trailer over 80" wide with combination tail lights

If a trailer is 80" or wider at its widest point, then it requires rear clearance lights in addition to basic trailer lights. These clearance lights indicate the width of the trailer when it is viewed from the back.

To meet these requirements on a flatbed utility trailer where the bed extends past the wheels, you can install combination trailer lights that include the rear clearance function. For proper mounting, the lights must be installed at the widest points on the rear of the trailer - one on each corner.

PC-Rated Lights

Diagram of light spread for PC rated light

A PC-rated light produces a 90-degree angle of light to either side of its centerline for a total of 180 degrees of coverage. This beam pattern can be clearly seen when you are standing directly in front of the light, as well as when you are standing on either side of the light. When properly installed, this type of light can function as both a front clearance light and a side marker light or as a rear clearance light and side marker light.

Video Transcript for Optronics Trailer Lights - Tail Lights - TLL160RK Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Optronics Over 80" LED Trailer Light Kit. This light kit is ideal for marine trailer applications. It's going to come with two red rectangular LED trailer lights. The passenger side light, or the right hand side light, is going to serve seven functions: such as your stop, turn, tail, rear clearance, rear reflex, side marker, and side reflex functions. The driver's side light's going to contain all the same as the passenger side light, plus your license plate illuminator or license plate light. The lights feature a sealed, waterproof construction that is submersible. They're going to feature replaceable lenses.

The LED system is encapsulated inside the unit. If you we're to take off the lens, what you would see is you would see is a nice, clear plastic; kind of like a bubble that goes over all the LED lights in the board and all that stuff, to keep it completely sealed. It's got that nice, sealed design, waterproof, can be submersed. If you end up cracking or breaking the lens, the lenses can be replaced. They're just held on there with four screws. The lenses are made from an acrylic construction.

The housings of the unit are made from plastic. It's a nice strong durable design that's corrosion resistant. It's a full LED system. LEDs are going to make great replacements for incandescent lights. They last longer.

They burn brighter. They're much more efficient. You don't have to worry about replacing bulbs. You don't have to worry about brittle filaments. The lights are going to contain a three-wire design. You're going to have your white wire for your ground wire; your brown wire is going to be for your running lights; for your passenger side light, you're going to have a green wire.

That's for the stop and turn lights. On the driver's side, you're going to have a yellow wire. That's going to be for the stop and turn lights. The lights are SAE and Department of Transportation Department compliant. They meet FMVSS and CNVSS requirements for automotive lighting. They are PT-rated as well as PC-rated lights. A few dimensions I want to go over with you real quick. We're just going to take a look at one of the lights, since they're both going to measure the same. The widest point is actually here at the front. They're a little bit more narrow at the back. At the front, the length is going to measure 8 1/16th of an inch long. Take a measurement of the height, so from top to bottom; that's going to give us a measurement of 2 7/8 of an inch. The depth, back to front; we're looking at 2 13/16 of an inch deep. The mounting slots on the lights, these are going to be separated on 2-inch centers. You're going to have three slots. Center on center is 2-inches. Center on center is 2-inches. Center on center is going to be 4-inches; again, three wire design. Your mounting hardware is included so it's going to come with your bolts. It's going to come with your nuts with serrated washers attached to them. With the kit, you're also going to get your wiring nuts, as well. When it comes to the number of LEDs that each light contains, this one is for the driver's side. This is going to contain 22 LEDs, so we're going to have 12 right here in the main body, 3 right here for the rear clearance, and then 3 for the side marker. On this corner, there's going to be 6; 3 on the front, 3 on the side. Then, on the bottom for the license plate light, we're going to have an additional 4; 2 diodes located on each side. For the passenger side light, we're looking at a total of 18 LEDs; 12 on the main body, and then again, 6 going around here on the corner; 3 on the front and 3 on the side. I do want to go ahead and hook it up to power, that way you can see what it looks like with power running to it. I'm just going to hook up the driver's side light. Again, the white wire's going to have a ring terminal already attached to it; that's going to be our ground wire. The yellow wire is going to be for our stop and turn signal. Then, brown wire is for our taillights. It sends out a really nice, clear consistent signal. Again, you can see all the LEDs right here. I'm going to bring it in a little bit closer so we can get a better look at it. We're going to have that main body. Then on the sides, you can see there's no lights on this side. Again, this is for the driver side. On the outer edge we're going to have three right here on the front, three right here on the side, reflectors are built-in to the lenses. On the bottom, we're going to have the license plate illuminator, or the license plate lights to send out a nice signal down towards the license plate. This is the taillight function, so when we activate our brakes, you can see how the signal output increase. Then, when we activate our turn signals, it's going to do that same thing. When it comes to the power draw, we're looking at 0.259 amps for the stop and turn lights, and 0.062 amps for the side marker and clearance lights. That's going to be rated at 10.8 volts. Optronics is going to put a lifetime warranty on the LEDs. That's going to do it today for the look at the Optronics Over 80" LED Trailer Light Kit. .

Thank you etrailer. These tail lights were just as described and were delivered VERY VERY fast. I installed the on an old 2002 Tracker trailer as the old lights were old and rusty and only worked part time. Perfect fit - work great - LED lights are very bright. This is what you need to update an old trailer. 489951

My order arrived in good time and good condition, and the customer service here at etrailer was *superb*. Installation was ultra simple. It took far longer to break loose the old lights than to install the new ones. Very conveniently, the new lights have the same bolt pattern as the 20-year-old incandescent Wesbars they're replacing --and have a couple options for different bolt patterns were I installing them on a new trailer. The electrical leads are a good length --not too short/stingy with the wire. My only major complaint is that they came with wire nuts for connecting the leads to the harness, which aren't ideal for a submersible application, especially in salt water. I ended up using better, butt-end connectors that I had on my shelf. In an ideal world the manufacturer would have included two additions in the package: a packet of dielectric grease, for connecting the leads, and a simple rubber/plastic licence plate bracket to hang in the correct position under the left-side light (such as the original Wesbar lights had included). All in all, sitting here writing this ten minutes after I completed the job, I'm satisfied with the product. Hopefully they'll survive and perform as long and as well as the last lights did. 681891

These lights are great. Marker lights can even be seen in day light. Brake/Turn lights are very bright. Easy to install. These lights are for over 80" wide trailers, and are legal to run in my state for under 80" wide trailers. Very bright and would recommend to anyone that needs lights for there trailer. 504040

I was looking to upgrade all of the exterior lights to LED on my 1986 Fleetwood 5th wheel. All was well until it came to the tail, brake and tail lights. Jameson at etrailer put in touch with the perfect product. Ordering was simple and delivery was expedient. Thank you Jameson and etrailer! 471803

Recently bought a Boat with Easy Loader Trailer , both Tail Lights and side marking lights were corroded from Salt water use, in the process of rewiring the trailer , new lights arrived about week after ordering them, was a little disappointed when opening the new TLL160RK Tail Lamps as the Red lenses on both lamps were scratched during the shipping from the manufacturer to etrailer. I decided to go ahead and use them and very satisfied how they look , assembly was easy . These lights are excellent replacements for the old Wesbar lights that they replaced. 538854

You can't go wrong with LED lights. This kit works perfectly. Easy installation. The wires are all color coded exactly except for 1 of 6 wires but nevertheless, no brainer. I also purchased shrink wrap butt connectors to keep the system water tight. These lights are bright and very visible. As always, etrailer is the best. I love ordering from etrailer. 509078

Installation was dead simple, considering I've done it before. I bought a similar set of lights like this from a well known, budget quality tool store, which were rated to be "submersible." After the first summer, one was completely dead, and the other was flickering like crazy. I figured out when I took them off that the way they sealed them to be submersible was to hot glue them. That might work for colder climates, but when you take your boat trailer to the lakes along the Colorado River in Nevada and Utah, the temperatures at ground level over asphalt can get up to the 120-140°F range. It seems that they got so hot that the glue melted and allowed water to seep in, shorting the lights out and causing my problems. I'm hoping this set will last longer than a single season, but I won't know for sure until I run them. So far, just based on installation, they seem like quality components and so they get 5-stars. If I find out later that they can't take the heat, I'll see what I can do about adjusting my review. 512527

Package delivered promptly. Appeared packaged well. Lights installed easily and operate without issue whatsoever. I decided to purchase this particular brand from this particular retailer because of the lifetime warranty on the LEDs and etrailer's positive reputation. I am, however, a little disappointed that the lens of one of the lights looked a little scuffed up... as if it had been rubbing against the inside of the plastic packaging. I know things like this don't remain pristine forever, but when you purchase something new you want it to look that way! 435826

I just installed these lights on a 2003 Karavan boat trailer, replacing the originals. The standard mounting slots and bolts matched perfectly with the trailer mounting plates, and the wiring color coding matched the trailer's too (perhaps those are somewhat standard?). So installation was simple and straightforward. The instructions included with the kit seemed adequate, but in my case they weren't really needed. These new lights are much brighter than the originals (sealed incandescent) and I expect they'll last much longer as well. Overall I'm very pleased with these lights. The quality seems good and the price reasonable (in my opinion). 442852

This is a replacement on a trailer I bought in January 2017. My trailer came with these lights. I backed into something that broke the lens and made replacement necessary. This, and the original, came with great engineering regarding the lighting bulbs, wiring, and waterproofness of the assembly. Unfortunately, to save a few cents on a $40 tom$60 retail item, the manufacturer chose to use bolts for attaching that quickly rust in salt water usage and become impossible to replace without total destruction of the unit and a hack saw to remove the bolts. Shame on the light producer for saving a few cents on bolts and nuts for an otherwise fine product. The accountants must be in charge. This is similar to outdoor furniture from China that comes with instantly rustable bolts and nuts. 659917

Lights are great. I have installed these already and fit perfect for my trailer. they are bright. The only issue I have is the left light has a white LED light illuminate at the bottom. but the right one did not come with it. 750120

Comments
The left trailer tail light features a white light on the bottom of the light to act as a license plate light. This is why the light is only on the left tail light and not on both lights.

Switched from bulbs to LED lighting on my boat trailer. Was growing tired of the constant maintenance of bulbs over the years; leakage of supposedly water-tight systems, remembering to disconnect the lights prior to launching and plugging them in prior to driving home. etc. The Optronics lights come with a lifetime warranty. They are sealed systems that will not burn out. The installation is simple... Upon testing the new system, you immediately recognize the incredible brightness and the stepped up brightness of the brake and turn signal lights. From safety, easy install, and low maintenance perspectives, I would recommend the Optronics LED system over the traditional bulbs. No regrets. 745366

These lights measure 8 inches long and 3 inches wide and their sealed, waterproof construction is designed specifically for boat trailers like yours. The kit includes 2 red LED tail lights that will...

  • Trailer Tail Lights Stop Working When Headlights on Jeep are Turned On
It could be that the lights # TLL160RK are malfunctioning but since the problem only occurs when the headlights are switched on for your 2003 Jeep TJ I think there is either a faulty connection or ground. Have you tried testing the 4-Way flat on your Jeep with your headlights on? If you haven't done that yet see if that makes a difference. You can also try testing your trailer with a different vehicle to see if it gets the same results. Start off by checking the connector on your Jeep...

  • Locating Replacement Trailer Lights for 1998 Shorelandr Boat Trailer
We do have a large selection of trailer lights available that might work well as replacements on your boat trailer. I am not sure as to the exact model assembly that is installed on your Shorelandr Boat Trailer, but researching some pictures online, it looks like it uses rectangular lights similar to the Optronics # TLL160RK. These LED tail lights feature a sealed, waterproof construction perfect for boat trailers and the mounting hardware is included. They measure 2-7/8 inches tall,...

I attached a picture that has all of the mounting dimensions for this light for you to check out as well.

  • Recommended Replacement Tail Light Assemblies for a Yamaha Trailer
If your Yamaha trailer measures over 80 inches, then I recommend the Optronics Waterproof LED Trailer Light Kit, # TLL160RK. This light set is designed for marine trailer applications which means the unit is sealed and waterproof. The units are hard wired to your current trailer's lighting wiring and the units have separate ground wires. For a trailer that is smaller than 80 inches, I recommend the Optronics Micro-Flex LED Trailer Tail Lights, # TLL28RK. These light are square in shape...

  • What Size Mounting Stud is Used with the Optronics LED Combination Trailer Tail Lights TLL160RK
I would love to help but unfortunately Optronics was not able to provide me with the size of the bolts that are included with the Optronics LED Combination Trailer Tail Lights part # TLL160RK as they do not make the actual bolts themselves. However, I went out to our warehouse for you and measured them. They are either a 1/4"-20x 1" or a 1/4"-28x 1" carriage bolt.

  • How To Add LED Tail Lights To a 1990 Ford Ranger Flat-Bed
I was able to access the tail light wiring schematics for a 1990 Ford Ranger and it appears as if the vehicle uses a conventional combined wiring system in which the brake/turn circuits are on one wire and then the running light circuit is on another wire. If that is the the case then you would not need any additional converter to use the Optronics LED Combination Trailer Tail Lights part # TLL160RK. The setup you are referencing is called multiplex which simply means the brake/turn/running...

  • Wiring 3-Wire Trailer Lights TLL160RK to Semi Trailer With 7-Way Round
By "3-way" LED lights I assume you are referring to 3-wire lights - and with the caveat that our products are designed for recreational vehicles and we have limited experience with semi trailers - you will be able to use 3-wire lights like # TLL160RK on a semi with a 7-round like # PK11700. The issue is that this type of connector has separate pins for tail/license plate, stop, and turn signals whereas a 7-blade has the turn and stop signals on one circuit. So you will need to add Wiring...

  • LED Trailer Taillight that Has Mounting Studs that are 4 inches Apart
Hey Bruce, so the mounting studs of the Optronics LED Combination Trailer Tail Lights # TLL160RK that you referenced can be set exactly 4 inches apart so this light kit would work great as a replacement and would install easily. These are also LED like you said you were wanting too so they fit what you are looking for in that regard as well.

  • Replacement Tail Light for 1990 Douglas Boat Trailer
All of our Wesbar Tail lights that are incandescent bulbs use a 1157. To get your replacement bulb, you will need to remove the other bulb and read the number on it. Since you seem concerned about breaking your lights, it may be a good time to consider upgrading your tail lights. I recommend the following LED options: Waterproof, Over 80" LED Trailer Light Kit # TLL160RK Miro-Flex LED Trailer Tail Lights # TLL28RK Waterproof, Under 80" LED Trailer Light Kit with 25' Wiring Harness...

  • Tail Light Wire Colors on Trailer Do Not Match Wire Colors on New Tail Lights
The easiest way to determine the functions of the trailer wires is to plug in the trailer to a tow vehicle and have someone operate the vehicle lights while you test the wires with a circuit tester such as # 40376. Once you have identified the wire functions you can connect them to the lights in kit # TLL160RK. There isn't exactly a standard for trailer wiring so the definitive way of finding out wire function is to test like this. On the lights a brown input indicates a running/tail...
