Question:
Jon, Thanks for your speedy reply. Your suggestions were great and I will be ordering then today. I now have another question. After connecting the 4 wires and heat sealing the connections, would it be a good idea to wrap the connecting wires together in one big tape ball. Small wire loops are great places for limbs or other things to snag or get caught in the wire loops and pull them apart.

Yes, it is necessary to have the ground connection on your trailer as it can cause your lights to not work properly. Since the white wire was cut off right next to the 4-Way connector you'll have to replace the whole connector but we have plenty of options for you to choose from. I highly recommend the Hopkins Endurance Easy-Pull Harness # HM48114 because it is designed specifically to help make disconnecting your trailer wiring much easier and the wiring is labeled for easy installation.
Since you have a Malone canoe trailer, like part # MPG464-LB, I also recommend using Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05744-5 so that your connections are completely sealed off from water.
I have attached an installation video of the Hopkins connector for you to check out.
