Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com and today we're going to be taking a look at the 22 to 18 gauge butt connectors. These are going to allow you to connect to ends of a very small thin wire like this one that I have here. These are going to be common in any system that uses multiplexing. That's becoming a much more common system of wiring, as there's more and more computerized things in vehicles, those wires get smaller so that they're able to minimize the amount of wires that are in your vehicle. So now we have multiple signals going over one wire, but a lot of times those signals can be going over a very thin wire.So you need to get these connected, you need a small butt connector to make sure that it gets a good bite on that wire.
If you try to use something that's bigger, it's just going to have more of a gap and it's not going to hold tight. So this is going to be the piece that you need, I will show you how to connect the two ends together. So I've got my very thin wire here, this is probably a 20 or 22 gauge, so really thin wire. I'm just going to strip back about a quarter of an inch of the insulation on this wire, that way we can actually get our connection made. Do that on both ends.
Going a little bit more than a quarter inch on that side. I'm going to match it up here on the other and then it's a good idea to twist the ends to make sure that your wires don't come out or there's not one straggler hanging outside of your butt connector. If that happens, it can sometimes cause a false signal, especially with these wires being so thin, even one stray piece of copper can affect the system. So I'm going to fold this over a little bit since it is just so thin to give my connector a little bit more to bite onto. Again, this works for up to 18 gauge, which is going to be a bit bigger than this wire I have here. So that's why I'm able to allow for this to fold over.
Again, just twisting it to get it in place, use my handy crimpers. You want to make sure that whenever you're crimping this down, you use the right slot. Some of these tools will have multiple options, so you want to use the one for an insulated butt connector since that's what this is. Non insulated can sometimes either not get a good enough crimp or punch through and actually break that insulation defeating the purpose of it. Be sure to look at the labeling on your tool.
If you're just using a pair of pliers, you should be fine. You always want to check your connection after you make it, give a little pull, make sure that the wires are all in there and it's not going to come flying out of there. Any wiring that you're putting on a vehicle, you have to think about how it's going to be vibrating as you are going down the road because you are going to be in motion, so you want to make sure that connection is nice and tight so you don't have to get into these wires again. A lot of times thinner wires like this, they can be in some hard to reach areas so the less you have to do this, the better. As you can see, we have our nice connection now. You could wrap that up with some electrical tape or a smart idea would maybe to get some heat shrink sleeve to go over that. Use a heat gun to seal around it to create a more watertight and sleeker look for your wire, but that's pretty much all there is to it.Again, you're going to get five of these connectors with this part number, so should have a few on hand for whatever your job might be. Well I hope this video has been helpful in deciding if this is the right butt connector for you. We do also have heat shrink butt connectors, so if you want something that's going to be a watertight seal, that's a great option because it's going to seal around that wire with just that butt connector. So if any of these connections are being made outside of your vehicle, they're going to be exposed to weather. I'd highly suggest getting those, and you can find those right here at etrailer.com, along with other sizes of butt connectors. Thanks for watching and we'll see you next time.

Products arrived safe and well packaged. Really like all the information on the website to help you do the job yourself. Videos are a great help. I have purchased from etrailer in the past and am very happy with this company!
I received my wiring harness and other components on the day in which they were promised for delivery. I had already viewed one of your posted videos on how to re-wire a utility trailer so I promptly installed the wiring harness and connected it to the lights which I had already mounted. Everything worked great! This was the first time I had re-wired a trailer and was initially apprehensive about doing the job myself. Your video made the difference! I have marked your website URL for future reference. You will be my "go to" site for trailer accessories and information.
These little connectors work great! They are simple and quick to install. I used them to connect some new tail lights, which I also bought from this company, to a jet ski trailer. These connectors helped to solve a pre-existing short and provide a water resistant connection. A perfect transaction from an outstanding company. Thank you!
These make getting a water resistant connection a cinch. Use in conjunction with the shrink tubing and you'll have doubly resistant splices that WORK.
Products were as advertised, but the butt connectors were shipped in an open plastic package and it had came open and by luck they were still in cardboard shipping container, and other contents were in plastic bags with zip bag closures and were all together!
I've made 2 purchases from etrailer.com in the past 3 weeks. Shipping was fast, the price was competitive and all items purchased were as stated in the descriptions. This is my go to site for any of my future needs.
