Note: Early production models built before April 1994 require wiring harness 46255, if built March 1994 or beyond, 118349 is correct.

Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

easy to install, but fuse line instructions and where to connect it on the black box were not as clear as they could have been. no markings on the black box.

by:

This wiring system was so easy to install. eTrailer.com provided a great online video tutorial of the installation. That helped a lot because the instructions from the manufacture was limited.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Easier than I expected.Follow the video instructions and you can't go wrong. Route wire under truck along driver's side and you'll avoid most of the hot, exhaust system. Product works great! Installed on 96 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the tow package.

by:
1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

It works very well but I think the instructions need to be a lot more detailed for most people. It took some time to figure out a few things and the fuse that must be installed does not explain what to do very well at all, (Thats the yellow thing up there in the picture).

Other then needing much better instructions it is a great product and I WOULD buy it again without any problems.

by:

Well made, easy to installLiked the instruction video. It was easier to understand than the written instructions. Everything from ordering to installation was easy and well thought out. It wasn't the lowest price but the website gave me confidence that this was the one for my car and everything was included for an easy install.

  • Hitch and Wiring for a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Hello John, No, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13048 does not come with the wiring, but it is a great fit for your 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For the wiring you are going to want the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118349, and don't forget a # 18144 for a clean looking install. Now the # 118349 is going to get you equipped with a 4-flat to get the lights working on the trailer, if you are looking to tow something with brakes...

  • Installing Curt Trailer Wiring Harness 55260 on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee
When installing Curt trailer wiring harness # C55260 on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, both connectors will install on the passenger side of the vehicle behind the tail light and interior trim panels. Look for the matching connectors that look like the gray and black connectors on the harness. This harness is designed to fit on vehicles that have the factory tow package. If yours does not have the factory tow package the wiring may not be present or active for this wiring harness. If that...

  • Cant Find All of the Connection to Install Curt Trailer Wiring Harness on 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Curt trailer wiring harness # C55260 is designed for models of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee that came with the factory tow package. It is possible that yours does not have the factory tow package so not all of the wiring is present. If you have searched and cannot find that connector anywhere then that is likely what is going on. So instead of harness # C55260 you would need a different harness, # 118349. I have included a link to a video review of this harness for you.

  • Do Converter Boxes on Trailer Wiring Harnesses Ever Go Bad
Converter boxes like what is on the Tow Ready Wiring Harness # 118349 can short out. Actually if there's a short on the trailer wiring they tend to short out pretty frequently. If you tested the input side of the box and the voltage is there when it is supposed to be, but on the output side of the box the voltage isn't there then it has shorted out and would need to be replaced. I attached an FAQ on troubleshooting 4-ways for you to check out also.

  • Parts to Add 7-Way Wiring to 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Factory Trailer Hitch
I definitely have some wiring parts so you can add a 4-Way/7-Way connector to your 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. There aren't any with that direct plug though so we'll have to piece together a few things to get to that point. To add a 4-Way to your vehicle you need the Curt T-Connector # C55260 which plugs into the factory tow package wiring. If you don't have the factory tow package you'll use the Tekonsha T-One # 118349 instead. Now that we have the 4-Way you can use the Hopkins # 37185...

  • Installing 4-Way Trailer Connector on a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Vehicle manufacturers don't always (Hardly ever) use the standard green, yellow, white, brown wire coloring we're familiar with. So, you have to connect the harness by function. Use a circuit tester, like our # PTW2993, to test the wiring on the Jeep to determine each one's function. Then wire it as follows: Green - Right turn signal Yellow - Left turn signal White - Ground to the Jeep's frame Brown - Running lights If you'd rather use the custom wiring harness for the Grand Cherokee,...

There could be a few reasons why this is happening. The first thing I want you to do is go ahead and disconnect the trailer. Then use a circuit tester, like # PTW2979 if needed, to test the wires leading into the converter box for harness # 118349. Run through all the functions of the vehicle (left/right turn signals, brake lights, and running lights) while testing the wires. If the signals are not correct going in there that indicates a problem with the vehicle wiring that will need to...

  • Brake Controller and Trailer Wiring Installation on 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
To install a brake contorller on your 1997 Grand Cherokee, you'd first need to install a 4-pole connector, using the Tow Ready # 118349. How you'd proceed next will depend on the connector use on the trailer you'll want to pull. I'd recommend using a 7-way because it's the most common. You can always use an adapter like part # HM47570 to convert it to anything else you'd need. To actuate the electric brakes on the trailer, you'd need a brake controller. I'd recommend going with a proportional...

We don't have a video for this harness but I have included a link to our help article with tips on routing the power wire. • How do I Find Out if my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Came with the Factory Tow Package?
In most cases you'll be able to tell whether or not your Jeep has the factory tow package because it came with an unbranded (no manufacturer) hitch and a wiring harness installed on the rear of the vehicle. Even if those two things aren't true, it doesn't mean that at one point they were not attached. The most accurate way to determine the factory build on your Jeep is using the Jeep website and putting in your VIN to get the exact build sheet for your 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. If you...

Curt trailer wiring harness # C55260 is designed for models of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee that came with a factory tow package. If that connector is no where to be found then that likely indicates that the vehicle does not have the factory tow package and you will need a different wiring harness, # 118349, which plugs in line with the vehicle tail light wiring.
