How to Replace a Lance 6-Pin Plug w/ a Standard 7-Way Connector

Updated 08/18/2025 | Published 01/16/2025

Question:

I have a 2020 Lance 865; the camper side plug has 7 "holes" in it; the lance proprietary truck side plug (outlet) has 6 pins. Will this work? They don't sell a 7 pin Lance plug.

Yes, it will work. You'll just need to cut the Lance 6-pin connector out and rewire it into the etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector item # e99011.

Here are the individual functions of that Lance 6-pin:

Black Wire: 8 Gauge, 12-volt power
White Wire: 8 Gauge, Ground (-)
Green Wire: 14 Gauge, Running Lights
Red Wire: 16 Gauge, Left Turn Signal
Brown Wire: 16 Gauge, Right Turn Signal
Yellow Wire: 16 Gauge, Back-up Lights

I have a 2002 Lance 921 with a 6-way connector. Is this the same kit I would need to fit my 2022 Chevy 3500's 7-way?

@JohnA Yes, it is! That Lance 6-pin is incompatible with just about everything so the etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector item # e99011 is exactly what you need to convert it to a standard 7-way.

I have a 2021 Lance 650 with the 6 pin proprietary I just bought. To get me home, will a standard 7 pin with junction box with a 10AWG black work? The camper has a small 3 way fridge, and one 100ah lead acid battery. Is it imperative that the black is 8AWG?

@SteveG Yes, 10 gauge will work in your situation.

@JerredH thank you! What is the benefit of going with an 8G black and white? If I were to install a 10g black and white today, it is important I immediately switch out to the 8G kit when I get home? I should add, I just purchased the camper in Texas, but am camping in it this weekend in Northern AZ before heading back to Phoenix. What am I at risk of if I run the fridge while driving?

@SteveG It won't conduct power as well. You'll lose voltage when you drop to 10 gauge. 10 gauge will get you home but I would swap it out before you go on your camping trip. Depending on how long the drive is you may not be able to recharge your battery, while powering the fridge.

Jared, I’m picking up a2024 Lance 855S truck camper. I have a 2025 Ford F350 it will be going on. The Lance has the 6 wire as stated. So if I buy the box that you suggest will this run my 3 way fridge ok? Will this be a permanent solution or do I need to rewire something better when I get it home? Also my mechanical skills are limited. Is it as easy to do as your video shows? Who knows what the weather may be when I get it. Thank you for your time and patience.

@JohnW Thanks for all the information and congrats on your new camper. All of the functions of your camper will still work like they do now when you install the etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector item # e99011 in place of the Lance 6-wire connector. Essentially, the only thing changing is the connection to your truck and that will be a permanent solution. This is extremely easy to do, however I wouldn't attempt to do it in the rain! You will need some wire strippers like item # PT43ZR.

@JohnW Jerrod, Would the Blue Ox 88206 6 to 7 plug adapter work? Thank you

@Johnw No, the Blue Ox 7-Wire to 6-Wire, Coiled Electrical Cord item # BX88206 is a flat towing connector. That's a proprietary connector that Lance uses, which is why nothing else works with it.

Jerred H. Question. So where do you mount the junction box? I assume to the Lance camper. And then the cable with the 7 pin can simply plug in to the bed mounted 7 pin receptacle. But my question is how do you run the two 8G wires from the battery? I just purchased this camper and trying to sort through all the rigging. Mark

@MarkS Where you mount the junction box item # e99011 is going to come down to personal preference and space available where it won't get in the way. The box is weatherproof and is designed to be mounted on trailer tongues so you can put it anywhere. You shouldn't have to run additional wires from your battery. You'll just need to cut the Lance connector off and then run the individual wires to the junction box.

@JerredH I get the picture if it is used on a trailer. But the Lance slide in camper has to be set up where it can be loaded and unloaded in the truck. So I guess the there would still have to be a connection from the junction box to connect the two 8 ga wires. The running lights would all run through the round 7 way coming from the junction box. I may be over thinking it. Sorry. Mark

@MarkS You're good! It helps to talk it through sometimes. I recommend looking behind where the Lance Plug is located and seeing if there is space back there.

Does this come in a longer option? I'm looking for an 8 or 10 foot cord.

@EricC There isn't another kit, however you can buy the pieces separately and add a longer cable. Here are the parts you'll need: Junction Box - item # 3375601101 8' 7-Way Cable - item # H20046 or 10' 7-Way Cable - item # 50-67-005
