Simple, One-Step Installation

Echo Operation
The Curt Echo brake controller is managed entirely from the free ECHO Smart Control app on your smartphone. It connects via Bluetooth. From the simple, user-friendly app you can set the maximum braking output, adjust the braking sensitivity, and even apply the manual override. You can save multiple towing profiles in the app - a big plus if you have a fleet and want to be able to just select a profile and tow. And don't worry; after you've downloaded the app, you don't need to have data on to use the app with the brake controller.
Braking Output and Sensitivity
Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. To set your maximum braking output, select a level on the main screen of the app, going up to 100. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change.
You can also set the sensitivity, between 1 and 9, to control the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the set output level. This is a great adjustment to make when you're towing a heavy load and the trailer will need more umph to bring it to a stop so it doesn't push your vehicle forward. If your vehicle takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, lower the setting. You may also need to adjust the sensitivity based on your own preferences, or when the trailer load or road conditions change.
Manual Override
The app also includes a manual override button. Press the big orange button in the middle of the screen to slowly and smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your vehicle's brakes. This is perfect for stopping sway or limiting your trailer's movement while you're cruising. The maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes is determined by the set braking output.
You can also add a manual override button (C83HR - sold separately) to your dash so you can use the manual override without the app. The app must be running - either open or in the background - for the button to work. The button has an adhesive pad for a quick-stick installation and includes an easily replaceable battery.
Save Multiple Trailer Profiles
Get on the road faster by saving your settings. With the app, you can add and store multiple profiles for both trailers and vehicles so that your braking output, sensitivity, and display preferences will be ready to go as soon as you hook up. This is perfect if you own a landscaping business and you don't want to have to reset the controller every time you swap out trucks or trailers. But it's also really convenient to have at home. Because you can use the Echo on any car that has a 7-way, you and your spouse can trade off towing the family camper without having to completely redo the settings each time. Dark Mode for Night-Time Towing
The ECHO Smart Control app has an included dark mode for driving at night. This will change your background from white to black to cut down on glare and make the app safe and comfortable to use.
Weatherproof Construction
Because the Echo is made to be outside the vehicle, it's designed for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements, ensuring long-lasting operation despite rain, snow, dirt, mud, and more. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way RV-style plug that helps to reduce vibration and improve connectivity.
LED Status Indicator

Proportional Braking
The Curt Echo brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. Picked up my teardrop in ABQ on 2/17/23, and the Echo was easy to mount and sync to my phone, and worked flawlessly the 175 mile trip home. I also got my longer 3-way curt ball mount from etrailer, and it is a beast and also worked perfectly!1521174
As long as you follow the directions for hooking it up precisely, it works marvelously. Especially, if like us, no OEM brake controller was available for our Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I give it a low rating, however, because it is made very cheaply. Just from regular use (plugging it in and unplugging it), the unit cracked, and then after 1-2 more uses it completely fell apart. See the pictures.1468318

I just received the wireless brake controller so my experience using it is still little, however it was very easy to setup. It took about 2 minutes to plug in and get setup once the app was installed on my phone. I pulled my trailer around the block and worked to setup the sensitivity and it seems to work flawlessly. I like how I can setup multiple profiles for my different trailers. I lease my truck to it is nice that I don't have to install wiring and install the controller onto the dash of the truck knowing I will most likely turn it in at the end of the lease1255612

I have had the wireless brake controller for about a year now, and I have to say it has worked flawlessly. It connects to my phone each time without fail also. It is a bit more expensive than a wired controller but in my opinion, the ease of use and ability to use in different vehicles makes it well worth the investment.

Initially wouldn’t connect to iPhone but after uninstall/reinstall of app it was fine. After literally traveling around the entire US I have to say it was a blessing with plug-and-play simplicity and total control over braking parameters. The phone lost Bluetooth connection a few times while traveling but the controller maintains the program so no big deal. For me it was nice to see the braking rate on the phone graphic. Recently had a tow package installed on a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Unfortunately, there is an issue with this model not allowing a computer flash. All lights work but no power to the brake pole on 7-pin. This little adapter solved all my issues bypassing the brake pole and using the brake lights for power. When this arrived I opened the box and did not have any packing material to cushion the contents inside to prevent damage. The right side of the controller was cracked open (screw missing) and one of the pins inside is bent. I was able to repair the damage on the side. Have not plugged it in to see if it works.1438773

I used the wiring harness and 7/4 pin receiver from etrailer to wire my 2021 Toyota Highlander to use the Curt Echo. It worked flawlessly the first time. So far I haven’t needed to make adjustments from the original settings for my R-Pod 180 travel trailer. I do wish there were better instructions for initial set up.1308457

Like many, I have an SUV that isn't wired for a brake controller and was nervous about whether a wireless controller would really work. I purchased the Echo Controller after realizing my RV was not wired for Trailer Brakes and I needed to pull a trailer within days and no time to wire it myself or get it wired. I called eTrailer and explained my situation the solution that was suggested was the ECHO, I asked a lot of questions as I wasn't totally sold but was assured it would work and in fact it did. The only issue I have had is at times the Bluetooth does not stay connected, as indicated the ECHO defaults to the previous setting. I would buy it again.1534359

The only reason I didn’t give this product a higher rating is we found out, after the fact, that the controller doesn’t allow a charge to our RV battery like a regular plug does. That should be made ;more apparent in the specs of this product. While there can be rewriting workarounds to this, those weren’t satisfactory options so it is causing us to move to a different brake controller. The operation of this controller, otherwise, is excellent. Simple to use, simple to hook to your phone and worked great with our trailer. Unfortunately we need our battery to be working and charging as we travel since we go “off grid” often. If that’s not a concern of yours, this is an excellent choice.1279522

We have researched this question with Curt. They advised that the circuit is only rated for 30 amp peak. The constant amp rating is lower but they am not sure what that number is at this time. With the potential of overheating the unit while charging the battery they would not recommend it.

Wished I would have had other opportunities to get more familiar with the settings. But, we decided that this is not the type of RV we want to use. I used this kit to convert an OEM 4-way flat connector to a 7-way on a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Easy, straightforward install. Its been a Year , I have it on my Ford Transit 350 Adventure van that I haul a trailer with. I never worry about it not working ( I did when I first put it on) I don't even know if I have the App anymore. I holds all the setpoints in memory. I've been up and down the Grapevine about 6 times with no issues. It dose hang out there a bit but has never fallen out. A little fab work would be good but it hasn't caused me any trouble yet, So Why fix something if it's not broken.1519480

My daughter ordered a Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controler from another dealer and it appeared to be faulty. I contacted eTrailer to confirm my diagnosis and they were very helpful and confirmed that the controller was faulty. As we were in a time crunch to get the trailer brakes operational, I ordered a new controller from eTrailer and it worked as advertized - easy setup and control plus three families can use the same controller instead of having to have 3 separate controllers. Only issue is that it took over a week for them to ship the controller even though they showed it in stock when I ordered it.1025186

Curt has actually updated the Curt Echo # C51180 so that it is now compatible with the Smart Trailer Tow feature like what you have on your 2019 Ford F-150 Lariat.
The Echo used to not interact well with the Smart Trailer Tow feature (they essentially couldn't read each other well) so Curt started adding resistors inside the Echo and my contact at Curt said that the brake controller is compatible with that feature now.

Wireless brake controllers have been around for a bit but they haven't become all that popular until pretty recently. They're a lot easier to install and transfer from one vehicle to another. There's nothing added inside the vehicle and when you don't need it it's not in the way.

You do not have to disconnect your older brake controller to use the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180.
The wireless Echo will override a wired brake controller because the Echo does not use the blue brake wire from the 7-way socket. If you are looking for convenience, the Echo is definitely the best choice and won't require you to do anything but set it up and plug it in.

The Curt # C51180 Echo will work just fine on your Rebel , and the computer would not need to be re-flashed at the dealer in order for the Echo to operate. The Echo gets operates independently of the trailer brake circuit on the truck so it'll work great for you right out of the box. As long as the 12v power feed circuit on the vehicle is active (it should be) and you have a smart phone with a recent OS, the controller will work great for you.

Those are good questions and the answer to yes is both. Twelve volts will still go through the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 so the batteries on your travel trailer are not going to be affected.

I checked out our reviews and did not find anything regarding brakes wearing down using the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. That said, the controller can apply your trailer brakes even if you are not hitting the brakes on your tow vehicle.

It sounds like you are trying to pair the Curt Echo part # C51180 to the Bluetooth on your phone which is why the app is not recognizing it. You want to go into your settings on your phone and make sure you disconnect the Bluetooth from the Curt Echo device. Then go to the Curt app and pair the brake controller.
