How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

  • Replacement Option for Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack
There was indeed a recall on the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack part # LC643589. It sounds like you have a pre-recall version but in order to confirm you can look on the back of the jack for a sticker on the stem with a serial number. If there is no serial number present or if it is lower than SJWP2017-07-0001, then the jack was made prior to the recall and it will need to be replaced. In regard to who is responsible, that is not really my place to say but most people will go...

  • Travel Speed of 3,500 lb Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack
I reached out to the manufacturer, Stromberg Carlson, who told me their 3,500 lb Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3755 (Black) and # JET-3555 (White) has a travel speed of 10 inches over 55.5 seconds with no load. This is a relatively normal speed for a jack of this type and overall, these Stromberg Carlson jacks represent a great value. I have added links to video reviews of both trailer jacks for you to take a look at.

  • Recommended Powered A-Frame Trailer Jack for a T@B 320 Teardrop Camper
Yes, the vast majority of a-frame trailer jacks use the same bolt pattern which is 3" apart on center. Therefore you should have no problems whatsoever using an electric a-frame trailer jack on your T@B 320 S teardrop camper. For this, I actually recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack part # JET-2500 over the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack part # JET-3755 because it weighs less, 23 lbs vs 26 lbs. The 2,500 lb weight capacity will be more than enough for your...

  • Electric Trailer Jack Options for a 2005 Northwood Nash M-16C Trailer
I have several electric trailer jacks that will work with your 2005 Northwood Nash M-16C which I have attached a list of for you. I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack part # JET-3755. This jack has a 3,500 lb capacity (tongue weight) and offers up to 24" of lift. It has a drop leg for faster lifting, LED lights for visibility, and a built-in bubble level. I have also attached a review video of this jack.

  • Troubleshooting Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack JET-3755 Not Working After Being Extended
I am sorry to hear about the functional issues you are having with your Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3755. Based on the issue you are describing I would first manually lower the jack a little bit to make sure it was not overextended. Being overextended would put too much strain on the motor and it would not be able to retract itself. Next check that the star washers were placed between the trailer frame and the bottom of the mounting flange on the jack. These washers...

  • Replacement Electric A-Frame Jack for 2024 Coleman Lantern LT
I'm not 100% sure which floorplan of the 2024 Coleman Lantern LT you have, possibly the 17R. Regardless, the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack - 2,500 lbs # JET-2500 will be more than enough for your travel trailer. Even the heaviest of the models wouldn't come close to 2,500 lbs of tongue weight. It wouldn't hurt to get the # JET-3755 if you wanted it to move a little faster but it isn't necessary.

  • Solution for Tailgate That is Hitting A-Frame Jack
While your frustration is understandable and we have a solution for you, I wouldn't be able to tell you with absolute certainty that using the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3755 will stop your tailgate from hitting the jack. The reason is, A-frame jacks like these mount to a specific place on your trailer and if your tailgate comes down at that point, they will hit. What you can do instead is use a side-frame mount jack like the Fulton Marine Jack # HD50000101 or you could...

  • Where Can I Store The Manual Jack Tool On My Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack?
There is no place on the jack # JET-3755 to store the manual crank. You will need to find a place in your camper or vehicle to store it. I use the etrailer bag for my ratchet straps but there's more room in there than what the straps take, you can fit it in there. If you need straps, buy the bag with the straps # ETBMB-05852 or if you don't need the straps you can buy just the bag # e98900.

  • Best Replacement for Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack
The best replacement we have for the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack part # LC643589 is the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack part # JET-3755. This jack will be a direct bolt-on swap with the same standard features you have now such as a drop-leg which provides a larger adjustment range, lights for use at night. and an override feature for use in power loss. However, this jack unlike the one you have now has a built-in bubble level and a vacuum-formed plastic housing which...

The 3-bolt mounting flange on the Lippert Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack # LC285318 has a standardized hole pattern. This jack is intended to mount so that the included LED light faces forward toward the tow vehicle to illuminate the coupler and hitch ball. In the specs for this jack I saw nothing mentioned about rotating it. Similar electric A-frame jacks like # JET-3755 that also has an LED light built-in use a round mounting flange that has a similar mounting hole pattern. You are correct...

  • Does The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack Use A Threaded Rod Or Ball Screw?
Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 24" Lift - 3,500 lbs - Black # JET-3755 uses the threaded screw. It is a very nice jack that has some really nice functions like the bubble level, large LED side lights, built in clutch to protect gears and motors as well as the drop leg function. Only the DISCONTINUED Husky jacks used ball screws. I would pick the Stromberg for the clutch feature alone.

  • Lippert Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack 1817941 Stripped Threads on Screw/Nut
Thread damage to the screw/nut inside of a jack is usually a result of over extending the trailer jack. I'm not saying that is what happened to you but that is the cause of the majority of these situations. Is your jack still covered under warranty? If so then it may be able to be taken care of through a warranty claim. The screw/nut are not available as replacement parts. For a replacement jack I would use the Stromberg Carlson # JET-3755 electric jack that has 24" of lift rather than...

Most jacks, like the Stromberg Carlson # JET-3755, will allow you to open up the tailgate on your truck if you rotate the the trailer jack. Most people mount the trailer jack so that the controls face the direction of travel but there is nothing wrong with having the jack face a different direction. You can use a 3,500 pound capacity electric A-frame jack for your 7,500 pound travel trailer. The jack capacity does not need to match the weight of the trailer since the jack will not be lifting the weight of the entire trailer, only the trailer's weight at the tongue. Our most popular 3,500 pound A-frame electric jack is the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack with 23 inch Lift # JET-3755. I've attached a review video of this jack for you. In regards to an a-frame trailer jack, the shape of the mounting flange does not matter as the bolt spacing is an industry standard dimension.
