Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Review of etrailer Trailer Axles - 89 Inch 6,000 lb Axle with Easy Grease Spindles - e23GR

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at this trailer axle with the easy grease spindles. This is going to be a great option for those of you who are needing to replace an axle on your trailer, or if you're building your own custom trailer, you're wanting to have more of a customized suspension system. This will also work for that as well. But of course, there are lots of different axles out there, different weight capacities, different lengths.

So you want to make sure you're getting the right one for you. This is a three inch diameter round steel axle beam. It's going to have a max weight capacity of 6,000 pounds. So if you have a single axle trailer with a 6,000 pound weight capacity, this will work for that. If you have a dual axle trailer, that weight capacity will be doubled.

The other thing you're going to need to know to ensure this is going to work for you is going to be the length. So there's two different ways to measure the length. The first is going to be from our spring seats here, where our leaf springs attached to. These spring seats are welded onto our axle so they are going to give us a nice static point of reference to measure from. So from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other, it's going to be right at 74 inches.

The other way to measure is going to be from your hub face. And now obviously the hubs are not included in this with this axle but once you put your hubs and your breaks and everything on from one hub face to the other, it's going to be right at 89 inches. So just to give you an idea of what this is going to work with. So if you have your current setup, your current axle, or you can measure that and make sure that this is going to work for you. If you need a larger weight capacity or different length, we do have lots of other options available for you here at etrailer.com.

So make sure you're getting the right one for you. So this axle does have this slight bend here in the center. That's going to be our camber. That's going to ensure that as our trailer is under load, the wheels and tires are aligned properly. So you're going to get full road to tread contact across the full width of the tire. So you're not going to have to worry about uneven tire wear and that sort of thing. It's going to be great for your straight line acceleration and nice steady towing. Our spindles are welded in place using a patented welding process that actually allows the spindle to slide over the axle rather than just budding up against it. And so that's going to create about a 40% stronger weld there to help prevent spindle failure. It's also going to ensure proper alignment of the spindle so that everything is going to be nice and lined up. Our easy grease functionality here has that grease fitting on the end. So you can just took up the grease gun and pump some grease in. It's going to come out this hole here. So it will help fill up that cavity, make sure that you've got plenty of grease inside there around your bearings and that sort of thing. Now keep in mind, this is not going to replace the need to repack your bearings from time to time. Make sure that those are packed properly. This is just kind of going to be in between that regular maintenance so that you have plenty of grease in there for everything. As I said, our spring seats are welded onto the bottom of our axle. That's going to allow us to mount our leaf springs in the underslung orientation, and that's going to help lower the ride height of our trailer makes it much easier to load and unload your trailer. Our axle is also wired for your electric brakes. So we've got a double wire running from one side to the other. So that's one less thing that you'll have to worry about if you're hooking up your electric brakes. This axle is CSA, QAI, and SAEN certified. So you can trust it's going to meet those high quality standards, going to do a great job for you. You don't have to worry about that. It also comes with a limited lifetime warranty. So if you we're to have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. We're always happy to work with our customers and make sure you're getting good quality products and having a good experience. So overall, as long as that length and weight capacity work for you, I think this is going to be a great option. So that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
