Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

The axles that I ordered last year are still working out great. But even better than the parts was the service I got from etrailer. It was so great working with a company who took the time to listen to my project and help me get the right parts I needed, especially coming right off the heels of a terrible experience dealing with bad information and wrong parts from a competitor. Even with some damages in shipping, the returns/ and replacements were no hassle, with most issues being quickly resolved and not even costing me any additional downtime. As a contractor keeping a small fleet rolling, your competency and professionalism have made me a customer for life!! You guys at etrailer will be my first stop for trailer parts.

Welds looked good however the assembler failed to rotationally align the weld on spindle/brake mounts properly. One was about 3 degrees off and the other side was an 9.5 degrees from the 12 oclock position. Not sure about the thickness of the tube. Kind of strange to look at when the top of the brake system is not at 12 oclock. Found this after I removed the spring pads on this 2.1 degree camber axle so I had to jig the tube to fine zero toe to locate the new pads as the 2.1 camber tube changes wheel alignment depending on the bend/ springpad relationship. Not sure the AVG JOE is going to be able to move the spring pads when the brake mounts can't be used as a reliable ref point. If the toe is off from improper pad rotational location. the trailer will eat tires at best or worse cause a loss of controlled tracking and someone could get get killed.

So far performing well. Have not been able to use trailer yet as much as I wanted to, don't use the grease nipples. Its easy to regrease without.

by:

Everything is working perfect with that replacement axle. I have definitely put it to the test a lot of miles with a lot of weight. Very highly recommended.

by:

Very easy installation. Everything fit perfect.

by:

The mounts were 1/2 inch closer than advertised. I was able to persuade the springs inward to compensate. Good price and fast shipping.

by:

Axle arrived fast, was exactly what I ordered and needed. Install went well with no problems.

by:

Worked great on my trailer.
It is a older
trailer and I needed to move the anchor points on the axel but that was not difficult to have done.
Axel works great.
I love the easy grease feature.

by:

The axle was exactly what I ordered and showed up much quicker than I expected. I installed it in about an hour. Good quality. Having the wire for the brakes already ran inside the axle made it very easy to rewrite the brakes, nice feature.

Direct replacement for my rusted out axles on my car trailer, perfect fit, awesome quick shipping thanks etrailer

by:

Perfect fit shipped in great shape. No problems at all after a year running.

I needed to replace my 3500lb drop axle. etrailer.com website is easy to navigate. I found a new axle, the price was reasonable, free shipping, it arrived in a few days and fit perfectly. I’m totally happy with the axle and the service I received from etrailer. I will definitely use them again.

by:

by:

A+ works great. Fast shipping if I ever need axle again will buy from you

by:

Very good product

by:

Should come with the nuts for the breaks

by:

This axle fit and has done a great job for the loads it has hauled

by:

Received the axle about 1pm the next day after I ordered it! I didn't get home till 3, removed the old one slid the new one in, fit like a glove, and had it buttoned up back on its wheels by 5:30pm. Awesome!!!!

by:

I could not find the exact axle for my 2006 Carryall tandem axle trailer. This one was a perfect fit between spring perches but increased the distance between wheels by one inch. Also had to use a wheel seal with a larger ID. This was not a problem at all. I will be replacing the front axle shortly. The originals had a rust issue where the spring gripes (u-bolts) hold the axle. Well built product!

by:

Arrived quickly was easy to install, has been going strong for a year now.

by:

Good quality, quick delivery, everything fit as expected. Thank you again, etrailer!

  • What Is The Difference Between 5,200lb Axle e55gr and 6,000lb Axle e23gr?
Sure is! The only difference between the 5,200lb axle # e55GR and 6,000lb axle # e23gr is the wall thickness of the tubing. They both use the same spindle as it's actually the outer bearing and race in the hub that give extra strength and not the spindle diameter themselves. Since both of these axles are the same length, and same spring seat length, I'd just go with the 6k # e23gr for some extra peace of mind. This won't increase the capacity of your trailer if you originally had 5,200lb...

  • Determining The Correct 6,000lb Axles, Wheels, And Tires For A Yard Trailer
To provide you with the correct 6,000lb axles for your yard trailer I would need to know the following measurements from your current axles: -Hub face to hub face measurement (see picture below) -Spring center to spring center dimension (see picture below) For example the etrailer Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles - 89" Long - 6,000lbs # e23GR has an 89" hub face to hub face measurement and 74" spring center to spring center measurement. You'll be perfectly fine going with a 74 inch spring center to spring center axle with 74-1/2 inch spring center. That said we don't have 64 inch hub face to hub face axles with 74 inch spring centers, only 89 inch hub face to hub face and 74 inch spring centers. There are a few different options depending on the axle capacity you need: - 3,500 lbs: Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles # e38GR - 5,200 lbs: Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles # e55GR - 6,000 lbs: Trailer...

  • Replacement Trailer Axle Option for 1999 Triton Boat Trailer
The best match replacement we have for your trailer is the Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles part # e55GR which has an 89" hub face, 74" spring center, and 5,200 lb weight capacity. The hub face is longer than what you have but only by an 1" so the wheels and tires will stick out about 1/2" more per side. The spring centers don't match up either but you can move these inward by cutting the old ones off and tack welding them where you need them. If you need a higher capacity, this...

Based on the bearings you gave, that is either a 5,200 lb or 6,000 lb axle, but it's not possible for me to know specifically, that's just the capacities of the hubs that have those bearings. Realistically, to get the exact capacity you'll need to contact Dexter with the serial number.
