Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Fastest Tires for a Malone Kayak Trailer
To upgrade the tires on a Malone Kayak Trailer like item # MPG461B2, I recommend the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire item # TT48012C. This is a 4.80" x 12" tire that will fit with the 12" x 4" rim that came with your trailer. It has a 81 mph top speed.

  • What 4.80-12 Tire on Galvanized Wheel do You have for My Boat Trailer Used on Sometimes Saltwater?
Hello Todd, We definitely have something for you, but we do not a radial tire and wheel combo, as we only have that tire and wheel combo in a bias. It depends on your bolt pattern, and the weight of your boat to decide what the best option for you. You will want one of the following: - If you have a 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern and your boat does not weigh more than 2,500 pounds (assuming you need 2 wheels) # AM30670 - If you have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern and your boat does not weigh more...

  • Can 4.80-12 Tire Replace ST145/R12 Load Range E Tire
Hi Andrew; in terms of size it is close but the 4.80-12 is going to be shorter and and narrower. It also has a significantly lower capacity compared to a 145/12 load range E tire. I would stick with the same size and get the # KE46EV as a replacement. This also a load range of E with a max load of 1,520 lbs at 80 psi.

  • Correct Inflation Pressure for Trailer 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
Tire size 4.80-12 is not found on vehicles, but is a common trailer tire size on smaller utility- and sport-type trailers. In trailer use you do want to inflate them to the maximum cold psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall. Trailer tires should never be under- or over-inflated since they can deliver their rated weight-carrying capacity only when inflated to their specified pressure. Incorrect inflation can lead to excessive heat which is the main cause for tire failure. All of our tires...

  • Replacement Wheels And Hubs For A Triton LTWCI Personal Watercraft Trailer
Hi Chris! I would be shocked if the wheels have a 5 on 5 bolt pattern. I don't think I have ever seen a 12" wheel with that bolt pattern. They will typically have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and I would encourage you to have him look at the picture I am including to double check. If it's a 5 on 4-1/2, as I am pretty sure it is, the Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30670 would make a good replacement. It can support up to 990-lb...

  • What PSI Should Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel be Inflated to
Hey Andy, the trailer wheel and tire part # AM30670 should be inflated to 90 psi when cold under all circumstances and you'll be fine. Unlike on vehicles with trailer tires they need to be inflated to the max psi rating at all times so that you get the full weight capacity and prevent heat buildup which leads to failure.

I contacted ShoreLand'r Trailer for the original wheel and tire size supplied on your trailer model B16750-12. My contact there was able to find some data on this 1988 trailer. He indicated that the original tire size was either a 4.80-8 or a 4.80-12 with a 5-on 4-1/2-inch wheel bolt pattern, such as 4.80-8 # AM30060 or one of the 4.80-12 items shown on the linked page, such as # AM30670. • Can I Replace The Wheels On My CE Smith Sport Plus With The Kenda KE89EV?
Hey Tom, The Kenda Karrier # KE89EV you mentioned is a close size to the original on that CE Smith # CE48870 trailer, but it is not the exact same size. The Kenda # KE89EV is a larger tire size, but uses the same size rim and bolt pattern. The width and diameter of the tire is larger than the original on the trailer. The Kenda is 5.8" wide with a 21.4" outer diameter when inflated compared to the CE Smith trailer wheel which is a 4.9" width and 20.7" outer diameter. Just by looking...

Hey Adin, thanks for the information. The Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel item # AM30670 is indeed compatible with the CE Smith Offset Spare Tire Mount item # CE27310G. This is a great combo that will make storing a spare convenient. The galvanized finish on both the spare tire mount and rim will keep the rust away. The Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire item # AM30670 is about as comparable to a Carlisle 4.80 x 12 tire as you can get. This would be a great...

  • Can Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel Fit with Brakes on Trailer
Hey Nate, yes the Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 can be used with a hub/drum but the drum would have to be smaller. Basically it would need to be a lower capacity than a 3,500 lb axle to fit as those drums are going to be too big. Do you know what capacity axle you have?

  • Upgrading from Load Range B to Load Range C 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
It won't really be necessary to upgrade the load range of your trailer tires as the tires only need to be rated for the weight of the boat/trailer minus the tongue which is usually around 10-15% of the boat/trailer weight. That said, you could upgrade to a higher load range without issue for better peace of mind. The ride would just be a bit stiffer. I recommend the Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30670 which has a load range c rating suited for use...

  • 12 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire that Has Higher Speed Rating
Hey Keith, if you exceed the speed rating of your trailer tire you will end up overheating the tire and that will most likely cause it to fail. This is definitely going to be very likely if you are driving 12 to 14 hours at a time. Best option would be a similar wheel and tire like the part # AM31202 which is rated for up to 81 mph.

The # AM30670 is a 4.80-12 sized tire and # AM30790 is a larger 5.30-12 sized tire. The latter being about 3/4 of an inch wider and over an inch larger in diameter. Also, they both have a C Load Range but the larger # AM30790 has a higher weight capacity at 1,045 pounds when inflated to 80 psi. The # AM30670 is rated up to 990 pounds at 90 psi. With...
