Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Switched from a 5.7-8 to a 5.3-12, and I was worried about clearance, but I still have +/- 2 inches under the fender. I also like the profile of the bigger tire for the trailer. I always love etrailer! Quality parts and quality service everytime!

Nice wheels I blacked out the center with flat black the did a clear coat. Gave it a more define look.

I wanted a spare tire for my boat trailer. This model is better than the originals. And cost is the same as getting just a new tire at the local tire shop. The designation 4 on 4 means 4 bolt holes on a 4in diameter circle. Measure across the hub from one bolt hole to the opposite side hole.

This is my forth time that I have purchased tires and wheels, except I usually buy the white painted ones. These galvanized junk rims look horrible! I am almost afraid to use them. This is my mistake by trying to save a few bucks! Should have a better description on how poor the quality is. Very disappointed!!

Tires are nice, rims are ok, galvanizing not so good. Fast shipping easy transaction

Easy website, fast service and delivery, great tires and wheels. Thank you.

Perfect purchase, We got exactly what we ordered and 1 year later the wheels and tires are in perfect shape.

Tires/wheels are great - arrived quickly, great quality, will definitely buy again when needed.

They are tires. Not much to review. Galvanizing on the rims is a little rough.
Trailer is much more stable at highway speed than with the old 8" rims & tires. Bolt on replacement for the 5.30-8"original trailer tires.

I got my order in record time with no shipping fees and the wheels and tires I ordered were better than I expected!

Great tires and rims for a very good pr ice.

Customer service does exist on the Internet! Etrailer delivers at a level of service that I did not think existed on the Internet. The team at etrailer rushed my tires out and saved our Memorial Day camping trip. I got follow ups every step of the way, and a very prompt response when I expressed the urgency of my order. The tires are great, and the proper rating for my trailer (they are nearly impossible to find at the big chain stores). After hearing about the site on several forums I decided to give them a chance and will never buy my trailer products anywhere else again!

Excellent quality, fast shipping. I am restoring a 1992 Jayco popup and I bought, wheels and tires, trailer hitch and a 4-way flat to 6 square wiring adapter for the camper. Great experience...I plan to buy from etrailer again.

Haven’t ran them yet but delivery was awesome fast! Tires and wheels look perfect! Nice job!

Great looking tires and wheels. Great price. Most importantly, fast, efficiant service and super quick delvery.

The product looks good in the pictures. The tires were just as expected. The set was delivered with equal tires pressure. The wheels are another story. The wheels are muddled and appear to be very poor casting with lots of slags. The bolt holes were heavily burred and lacking a clean machining as well. One tire was mounted with the stripes outward and the other with stripes inward. I am hoping this is just cosmetic, however, I prefer my camper to look nice and the same on both sides. The set will complete a 600-mile trip soon. I hope they perform better than they look.

Fantastic - received unbelievable customer service that walked me thru the whole process of picking the right tire and rim. Even gave advice for a broken stud.
Gave new Life and Ride to a classic older Motorcycle hauler - Ready to hit the road.

Picked up 2 spare tires for this trailer from on the way to Phoenix, AZ. There are 2 spares on the trailer and a special paint job. Harbor freight trailer with 8 inch tires. 2011 Smart 4 2.

Replaced old original tires on my boat trailer along with rusted rims. Tires look great.
Received my order 2 days earlier than expected.
Once again etrailer with great products and outstanding customer service!
Won't use anyone else.

Always a treat to open the box that new tires and wheels come in from etrailer. The galvanized rims were so shiny and bright they'd look great just hanging on a wall. Never had any issues with wheels and tires from this seller. I will be back again soon as I just purchased another used boat trailer with 8" wheels, (I prefer 12" wheels and tires for the smoother ride).

Whees/Tires came as described! Not knowing much about trailer tires/wheels, etrailer had all the info I needed! Easy to understand, read, and find!

wow......incredible deal on these tires / wheels and if that wasn't enough, the fastest delivery imaginable !
Of course when In built this splitter 25 years ago, I just modified some wheels to fit it by using washers and filing out the lug holes.....NOW, it's done right !

Many thanks, I will be back !

Excellent price fantastic service and delivery definitely a plus

Couldn't find the size of tire I needed on the island. For a little bit more I figured I get the tires and rims together. Took a few minutes to pop on. Ready to go fishing!

Delivery was fast and the tires were as ordered. Great deal on tires & rims. Will install them on my boat trailer in the Spring. Impressed so far !

  • Does the Center Pilot Hole on a Trailer Wheel Have to Be an Exact Size to Fit Over the Hub
There are 2 different types of wheels you will find on a trailer: lug-centric and hub-centric. If your wheels attach to the hub using lug nuts then it is lug-centric. This means that the wheel centers on the hub using the lug nuts. If your wheels attach to the hub with wheel bolts and no lug nuts then it is hub-centric and the wheel centers on the hub using the center pilot hole. If you have the first type, lug-centric, then the pilot hole can be larger since it centers on the hub using...

  • Can 10 Inch Trailer Wheel/Tire Combo Be Replaced With 12 Inch On Jayco Trailer
You said you have a 4 on 4 wheel bolt pattern on the wheels you have on your trailer with the 20.5X8-10 tires. The overall diameter of that tire is 20.5 inches. The Kenda Tire/Wheel Combo, part # AM30790 has a 5.30 - 12 tire on a 12 inch wheel and measures 21.9 inches diameter, and has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern as well. . • What to Consider Switching from 8 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire to 12 inch
As long as you have the fender clearance for a taller wheel and tire you certainly can go from a 8 inch wheel setup to a 12 inch setup. The size of most 8 inch trailer wheel setups are between 16 and 18 inches in overall diameter and for 12 inch wheels the size is between 20 and 21.3 so you would be looking at a difference in fender clearance of somewhere between 1 to 2 inches. For a white wheel with a 5.30-12 sized tire installed on it you would want the part # AM30790 which has a 4...

  • Are All Galvanized Wheels Hot Dipped?
The galvanized wheels from Americana are always hot-dipped. Some of the Taskmaster wheels use a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating that is a black finish and those wheels are not hot-dipped. We do specify the wheels that use the PVD and they are black finish versus light gray, so you will know the difference. The tire in tire and wheel combo # AM30790 is rated for 1,045 pounds at 80 psi. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. This is because trailer tires have a thick sidewall and if under inflated it can cause the tire to generate excessive heat and lead to failure.

  • Recommended Replacement 12" Wheel and Tire for 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
The size of your tire isn't necessarily going to effect the heat that they're going to generate, but tires that are not properly inflated will create more contact with the road and create more heat-which is the largest cause of tire malfunction. Also, there could potentially be 12" wheels with tires that are the same diameter as a 13" wheel, so in the interest of keeping things simple you're probably going to be best served just sticking with what you're currently using, and not creating...

  • What PSI Should Trailer Wheel and Tire be Inflated to In Size 5.30-12
Sounds like maybe you have more than one brand of tire on your trailer and there is multiple PSI requirements based on that. It is correct that you should always run the max pressure in the tire listed on the sidewall otherwise capacity is diminished and likelihood for failure is increased. For a wheel and tire in your size of 5.30-12 and a wheel bolt pattern of 4 on 4 like you need the part # AM30790 would be a really great option.

  • Recommended 5.30-12 Tires for 2,000 Lb Boat and Trailer
I do have some great trailer tire options for you but the total weight capacity of the tires on a trailer does not need to account for the loaded weight of the trailer, at least directly. The reason for this is that 10-15% of the trailer's weight is carried on the vehicle via the tongue. If you're looking for a greater margin of error however I can understand that and the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30790 would be a great option. My suggestion would be to use part # AM30630. It is a galvanized wheel for 4 on 4 pattern.
