Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I was looking to replace and possibly upgrade the tires and wheels I was using. All of the web site's info was enormously helpful in selecting a tire/wheel combination that did exactly that and for a great price. Tire/wheels arrived as promised (on time and exactly as described). Will use etrailer again and would recommend it to others.

1 year later and tires are great, easy rolling, great stability, carry the weight with ease. Looking forward to long service from them.

Customer service does exist on the Internet! Etrailer delivers at a level of service that I did not think existed on the Internet. The team at etrailer rushed my tires out and saved our Memorial Day camping trip. I got follow ups every step of the way, and a very prompt response when I expressed the urgency of my order. The tires are great, and the proper rating for my trailer (they are nearly impossible to find at the big chain stores). After hearing about the site on several forums I decided to give them a chance and will never buy my trailer products anywhere else again!

wow......incredible deal on these tires / wheels and if that wasn't enough, the fastest delivery imaginable ! Of course when In built this splitter 25 years ago, I just modified some wheels to fit it by using washers and filing out the lug holes.....NOW, it's done right ! Many thanks, I will be back !

Excellent quality, fast shipping. I am restoring a 1992 Jayco popup and I bought, wheels and tires, trailer hitch and a 4-way flat to 6 square wiring adapter for the camper. Great experience...I plan to buy from etrailer again.

The product looks good in the pictures. The tires were just as expected. The set was delivered with equal tires pressure. The wheels are another story. The wheels are muddled and appear to be very poor casting with lots of slags. The bolt holes were heavily burred and lacking a clean machining as well. One tire was mounted with the stripes outward and the other with stripes inward. I am hoping this is just cosmetic, however, I prefer my camper to look nice and the same on both sides. The set will complete a 600-mile trip soon. I hope they perform better than they look.

I've ordered from etrailer a few times but had never ordered wheels. My last wheel order was via Amazon. The wheels arrived "packaged" only by being taped together with shipping tape. They were very dirty and rather scuffed up. I thought that's what you get for "free shipping." My etrailer order of 2 wheels arrived in a very heavy cardboard box securely stapled - in immaculate condition - also via free shipping. Bottomline - the wheels were cheaper than I found on Amazon, shipped securely, arrived in 3 days and the nice people at etrailer sent me 3 messages related to the order's progress. Great service, great products & they know what they're doing. Highly recommend etrialer!

I could not be happier with Etrailer's customer service. I ordered the same size in a different style with express shipping to get ready for a cross country trip. But the item was out of stock. I received an email from Kat letting me know this, and even though it was 10PM EST, she still helped me find an alternate product to get to me right away. This saved my start date for my trip. The tires and wheels were perfect and I just drove on them from MA to CA. I put them on a Jayco Qwest Pop up. There were no issues and the tires still look brand new. Great product and super customer support. I will continue to purchase my trailer / camper items from them. Thanks so much!

Excellent looking tire and rim. Purchased 3 of these, to have a spare, as well as a light kit for my trailer. Ordered on a Saturday and delivered and Thursday. Had everything on trailer by Friday afternoon. Had old 8” tires on trailer previously, but these 10” tires make it look A LOT better. Everything looks great and price was more than fair. I would definitely buy again and recommend to anyone looking for a solid tire.

Once again great service and fast deivery! These will be used on a 20 year old pop-up camper replacing the original rusted out wheels. Unfortunately after installation they made the rest of the camper look worse so I wound up painting the chassis to improve appearance! The way I figure it Etrailer owes me a quart of satin black Rust-Oleum!...hahaha! Thanks again guys as always I will be back again!

  • Benefit to Radial Trailer Tire in Size 4.80-12
A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, which gives it better ground contact, better traction, stability, and tread wear. For highway use radials are often preferred. These characteristics come from the tires' construction. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. In your current tire size of 4.80-12 we have...

  • Recommended 5.30-12 Tires for 2,000 Lb Boat and Trailer
I do have some great trailer tire options for you but the total weight capacity of the tires on a trailer does not need to account for the loaded weight of the trailer, at least directly. The reason for this is that 10-15% of the trailer's weight is carried on the vehicle via the tongue. If you're looking for a greater margin of error however I can understand that and the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30790 would be a great option. We don't offer a wheel tire combo with a load range D tire, but you could always purchase the # AM10068 and the # AM20124 wheel separately and have them mounted locally. Another option would be to go up to a 13 inch wheel/tire like # AM3S130. This tire is 1 inch wider and would move your tire about 1 inch closer to the underside of the fender/wheel well. As long as you had at least 3-4 inches of clearance when the trailer is loaded, that would work fine for you. The tire is a 175/80-13...

This means that the wheel centers on the hub using the lug nuts.
