How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack lifts your trailer high enough at the tongue to allow you to couple it with your vehicle. Usually, your tongue weight is about 10-15% of your gross trailer weight (GTW). For example, a 10,000-lb trailer has a tongue weight of 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. To raise the tongue of a trailer this size, you'd need a jack that can handle a static load of no less than 1,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time fishing.

  • Are RAM Jacks and etrailer Jacks the Same
Kelly, the RAM jack MJ-1200B is the same thing as the etrailer # MJ-1200B. The discrepancies in the outer and inner tube measurements (3/8") are what we measured, versus what the original manufacturer measured. Sometimes the manufacturer measures one thing, but when we get our hands on it and re-measure it for our site we get a different measurement, which I believe is what you're seeing here.

  • Replacement Tongue Jack For Boat Trailer With Knott 1,200LB Jack
Since we do not carry any rebuild kits for your Knott jack and I do not see any kits available online, I recommend switching to our Round Swivel Marine Jack # MJ-1200B. If this jack needs rebuilt we have the following common replacement parts. Replacement Gear Kit # MJ-1000B-GR Removable, 6" Poly Caster Assembly # JWK-6P Replacement Bearing # MJ-1000B-BR Replacement Sidewind Handle Knob # MJ-1000B-KB

  • How Do Bolt-On Round Swivel Marine Jacks Mount to Trailer
The Mounting Kit # MJ-1000B-MK is a replacement part for the Round Swivel Marine Jacks # MJ-1200B and # MJ-1500B which actually mounts to the side of the frame of your trailer instead of in the hole location in your A-Frame coupler area. As long as your trailer frame is 2" to 4" tall this bracket system will work for you. If you're needing a different style that mounts in an A-Frame I recommend either the manual # TJA-5000S-B or electric # EJ-3527-BBX. These have a 2-1/4" outer diameter...

  • 1995 Freedom Wheels Cobalt 220 Runabout Replacement Trailer Jack Recommendation
Thank you for the photos! While it doesn't look like we have anything that mounts directly to your current mounting bracket, we do have some bolt-on replacement swivel jacks that will work perfectly for your application. For a single wheel replacement I recommend the Round Swivel Marine Jack w/ Wheel # MJ-1200B with 11" of travel and a 1,200 lb weight capacity, or for a dual wheel jack (for easy maneuverability) we have the Round Swivel Marine Jack w/ Dual Wheel # MJ-1500B-DWL which has...

  • Is There a Replacement for a Shelby Jack 5856A That Uses Existing Bracket
I do have an option for you but the Shelby trailer jack mounting bracket that you have welded to your frame won't be able to be reused with any newer jack. The Shelby trailer jacks did use similar designs in regards to mounting like the bolt-through and snap ring that some current jacks have but they are simply not cross-compatible. The bolt-through option for example from Shelby has a flat plate whereas the current models have a recessed portion. Therefore, the best option for you would...

  • Replacement Jack Options For a Shelby 4587 Trailer Jack On a Boat Trailer
I have a couple options for you to consider as no one makes a jack that will bolt on in place with your Shelby 4587 jack bracket you have welded to your frame. First the Round Swivel Marine Jack w/ Wheel # MJ-1200B is the closest we have to the design of your jack. This will bolt to your trailer frame either just behind your current welded jack bracket or you can have the bracket cut off and install the jack in the same place. • Replacement for Shelby 5764A Trailer Jack on 2000 Four Winns Horizon 180
Swapping the mounting hardware on a jack can be done, but it will depend on the specific mounting hardware of the jacks. Shelby jacks and parts are becoming more difficult to locate, so I would recommend replacing your Shelby hardware with something more easily replaceable in the future like the etrailer Marine Jack # MJ-1200B, which has a 1200 lb capacity and 11" lift. If you want to try to match the existing Shelby mounting plate, we do have one jack that may work. The Fulton Bolt-Thru...

  • Looking For Trailer Jack With 1-3/4" Tube Diameter
Hello Kirsten, thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, we do not offer a trailer jack with a 1-3/4" outer tube diameter. There used to be a jack from Bulldog that had a 1-3/4" tube diameter, but it has been unavailable for quite some time. Most of the jacks we offer have a 2" outer tube diameter like the etrailer Boat Trailer Jack # MJ-1200B. The inner tube has a 1-3/4" diameter, but the outer tube is 2".

  • Replacement for Shelby Trailer Jack on Four Winns Boat Trailer
I do have an option for you but Shelby boat trailer jacks are discontinued and we don't offer any direct bolt-on replacements for them. That said, you can easily remove the old flange by cutting or simply place the new jack beside it and leave the old flange in place. I recommend the Round Swivel Marine Jack w/ Wheel part # MJ-1200B which offers a bolt-on install with wheel for easier maneuvering.

  • Looking For A 1 5/8 Caster Wheel For My Pop Up Camper
Hey Jordan, The closest option that we have to the 1-5/8" you are looking for is going to be the Ultra Fab # UF49-954035, which is going to fit a 1-3/4" diameter inner tube. Its going to be an 1/8" larger than what you need. 1-5/8" is not a standard size which is why it is difficult to find a replacement. You will either have to find a wedge or something like a small adapter tube for this to work for yours. Typically in these situations I recommend going with a new jack as a whole that...

  • Recommended Trailer Jack with Lower Retracted Height for Landscaping Trailer
I looked through our selection trying to find a similar jack to the MaxxTow MT70149 with a retracted height less than 14-3/4 inches and found a couple of good options for you. You didn't say exactly what height you need, however part # MJ-1200B has a retracted height of 12-1/2 inches. The weight capacity is slightly less, at 1,200 pounds but that's probably still plenty for your trailer. It also offers 11 inches of travel which is a 1/2 inch less than the MaxxTow. • How To Add Tongue Weight To a Small Motorcycle Trailer
The issue you are having with excess sway is pretty common on light trailers. The sway issue might then be minimized when you have your motorcycle attached but odds are you are still going to have sway issues. The overall weight of the trailer is a concern but more importantly is the tongue weight. The best option you have to decrease trailer sway with your trailer would be to add as much weight as you can to the tongue. The best way to add the most amount of weight would be to make some...

The linked page displays all of our 1200-lb-rated trailer jacks. All of these are side-wind types and they range in their amount of lift, most providing 10-inches of lift. We also have both weld-on and bolt-on types. You can click on the filters on the page to narrow the items shown to those with the characteristics you prefer. • How To Replace Welded-On Trailer Tongue Jack for Boat Trailer
In order to remove a welded-on trailer tongue jack you will need to cut off the old welds to release the mounting bracket. This can be done using an angle grinder. The jack can then be replaced with another welded-on option such as the Fulton Marine Jack part # FXP100W0301. If you don't have an angle grinder or the skills to use one you can always leave the mounting bracket attached and just install a bolt-on jack in front or behind it, I recommend the Round Swivel Marine Jack part # MJ-1200B.

  • Replacement Jack for 2009 Ranger Boat Trailer
Trailer makers don't maintain detailed specs on items like the jacks they supply on their new trailers but we do offer many types and capacities so we'll have one that will work for you. It is best to select a jack with more capacity than you actually need; the same is true for hitches and winches. • Is 1,500 lb Trailer Jack Enough for 21 ft Boat Trailer
Trailer jacks are rated for the amount of tongue weight that the trailer has. Typically trailer tongue weight is around 10 percent of total trailer weight. So for a 1,500 lb jack to be at capacity the trailer would most likely weigh near 15,000 lbs. So a 21 ft boat trailer would have no problem with a 1,500 lb jack capacity. Our most popular swivel jack for a boat trailer is the part # MJ-1200B which has a 1,200 lb capacity and would work well.

Hello George. I believe I understand what you are describing. I really cannot recommend modifying a jack in the way you described though. If you need something with a retracted height of less than 10-1/2" we do have a few options for you. One is the Square Jack w/ Footplate # MJSQ-2500B. This jack has a 7-1/4" retracted height. Actually the hole that you see under the handle on the Ram Jack part # MJ-1200B is the port for lubricating the jack. Sometimes there is a zerk fitting there but for your jack it's just an opening. You would want to spray a lithium grease into that hole to keep the parts lubricated. Or you can remove the cap and spray down into the main tube of the jack that way as well.
