Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

  • What is the Cold Inflation Pressure of a Loadstar 4.80-12 Tire
In order to determine the specific cold inflation pressure of your tires, I will need to know the load rating of the tire. The load rating or load range designation should be stamped on the tire. We carry two Loadstar 4.80-12 tires, a load range C tire, # AM10062, and a load range B tire, # AM10060. The inflation pressure will be different based on the load rating. The load range C tire can support a maximum load of 990 lbs at 90 psi and the load range B tire can support 785 lbs at 60...

  • Recommended Replacement Tires for Aliner Camper When Tires Are Rubbing Inside Of Fenders
Thanks for the photo of your camper. Looks like a nice area. I was able to find the owner's manual for the Aliner trailer. The tires that came on the trailer originally are 4.80 x 12 and the wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt configuration. The tire also has a section width of 4.9 inches. The tires I recommend for your trailer are the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire, part # AM10062. These are Load Range C tires and have a maximum load rating of 990 lbs at 90 psi. The outer diameter of this...

  • Recommended Axle With 5 On 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Idler Hubs And Wheels
I contacted Harbor Freight's tech services line regarding your Haul Master Trailer. Your trailer may have an odd size axle, so the industry standard size parts would not be compatible. Their tech services can't give me the information to help you, so I would need you to pull your hub and give me the bearing number on it for me to tell you if we can change the hubs out for 5 lug or not.

  • Comparison of Two Kenda Tire and Wheel Combos Part # AM30670 and # AM30790
Both tires # AM30670 and # AM30790 are Kenda tires but there are a number of differences. For starters they're different sized tires. The # AM30670 is a 4.80-12 sized tire and # AM30790 is a larger 5.30-12 sized tire. The latter being about 3/4 of an inch wider and over an inch larger in diameter. Also, they both have a C Load Range but the larger # AM30790 has a higher weight capacity at 1,045 pounds when inflated to 80 psi. The # AM30670 is rated up to 990 pounds at 90 psi. With...

Hi Chuck; we do sell a replacement tire for this setup. The tire that comes with the # AM30620 is the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10062. If you need a replacement valve stem to go with it then you can use the # AM20907.

  • Availability of a Size 4.80-12 Tire with a Speed Rating Higher than 65 MPH
Typically special trailer tires are usually rated to operate at a maximum speed of 65 mph and if you exceed 65 mph, heat could build up in the tire and cause it to break down and fail. The tire I recommend for your 4.80-12 size is the Kenda # AM10062 because it was designed for excellent handling at high speeds even though the speed rating is 65 mph. The load rating is 990 pounds at 90 psi. I included a couple informative articles for you too.

  • What is the Air Pressure Rating for a 4.80-12 Load Range C Trailer Tire
Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. For a 4.80-12 load range C such as # AM10062, it should be inflated to 90 psi. The reason you inflate trailer tires to the maximum psi is because trailer tires are constructed with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load compared to passenger vehicle tires. If under inflated the thicker sidewall will lead to excessive heat build up and tire failure. I have included a link to our help article on trailer...

  • Motorcycle Trailer Tire Air Pressure Required
If your motorcycle trailer has ST (special trailer) tires, then they are made to be run at the max psi. If they do not have this ST distinction, then you most likely can run them at a slightly lower tire pressure. I recommend confirming with the manufacturer of your tires as we don't carry any tires that size. I wouldn't go with anyone else's advice as it could be a safety issue for you and/or others.

  • Are There 4.80R12 Tires With Powder Coated Wheels Available
We don't currently offer a 4.80R12 radial tire and 5 on 4.5 wheel together, but we do offer them separately with part # TT48012C and # AM20151. This wheel has a white powder coating, if you'd prefer silver or black then you can click on the link below that will take you to our available options. For the spare tire mount I recommend the Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier # FSTC1000301. This carrier is designed to clamp onto trailer frames up to 3" wide x 4" tall. For the jack I recommend...

  • Recommendation For Tire Upgrade On Boat Trailer With 4.80-12 Bias Tires For Highway Hauling
Changing to a Radial Tire # TT48012C is going to be the best way to get a more reliable tire for highway hauling without having to worry about any fender clearance issues. Radial tires perform much better on highways and do not wear as quickly as a similar Bias Tire # AM10062. To move to a 13" wheel and tire it will require modification to your fenders and possibly axle due to the larger size of the wheels and tires.

  • Can psi of 4.80-12 C Load Range Tire be Under what is on the Sidewall for Lighter Loads
You always want to have your trailer tires inflated to the max psi rating on their sidewall. If the max rating on the sidewall of your 4.80-12 is a C being 992 lbs at 88 psi, similar to the 990 lbs at 90 psi of the Kenda # AM10062, then you want to keep it filled to 88 psi. If you were to over or under inflate your tire then the load rating would become unknown and you could possibly overload it or it wouldn't do as good of a job at managing the heat from driving. Even though the tire...

  • What is the Speed Rating of the Kenda K353 4.80-12 Load Range C Tire
The tire that's used on the # AM30660 combination is the Kenda K353 12 inch Bias Trailer Tire- Load Range C # AM10062 does not have a speed rating printed on it, so the default speed rating is 65mph; this tire does adhere to DOT standards. The # AM30660 is currently the only tire and wheel combination of that size that comes with a wheel that has a 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern.

  • What is the Speed Rating for the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80-12 # AM10062
All of the trailer tires we carry, unless otherwise noted on the trailer tire itself, are rated for 65 miles per hour. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire for best performance and longest life. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you.

  • Recommended Tires For Malone Microsport With Two Fishing Kayaks
Trailer tires should always be inflated to their max capacity. This helps with load carrying capability but also for heat dissipation and wear. With your tires at 60 lbs, you will have your tires getting too hot and wear too fast as well as decreased traction even with more road contact. My recommendation is to go back to your 4.8-12 tires because you don't need the additional width. The load range isn't the issue, but you won't have any issue with that either for this application....

  • Stronger, More Heavy Duty Trailer Tire to Replace 4.80-12 Tires on a Boat Trailer
What you could do is go up to the next highest load range. The tire will have a higher capacity and ply rating so it will be more heavy duty and last longer. Please note though that using higher capacity tires will not increase the capacity of the trailer. For a load range C tire in size 4.80-12 you can use # AM10062. It is rated for 990 pounds at 90 psi. It has a 6 ply rating. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. The other option I would recommend...

  • Recommended Pressure to Inflate Trailer Tires for Trip
Special trailer tires, like the existing Carlisle tires on your trailer, should always be inflated to their maximum air pressure. The maximum psi of 90 that you mentioned should always be maintained, regardless of the load on your trailer or the distance that you will be traveling. This will ensure that the tires can hold its listed load capacity while performing at their best. If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower air pressure than the maximum, the amount of weight the tire can carry...

  • Determining Tire Pressure Required For a Load Range C Trailer Tire
For the correct tire pressure for your tire you will want to check the sidewall of the trailer tire. A tire like the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10062 does have a recommended cold tire pressure of 90psi and is rated load range C with a weight capacity off 990lbs. A tire like the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10234 that is also a load range C only requires 60psi.

  • Why Does The Wheel My 4.80-12 Tire Is On Measure 13" In Diameter?
It is definitely not common for a 12" tire like your 4.80-12 to be installed on a 13" wheel, but depending on where you measured the wheel it may look like a 13" wheel even though it is truly 12". If you take a look at the 30 second mark of the included video showing Jeff measuring the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel - 12" x 4" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Black # AM20153 you can see that to measure the diameter of the wheel you measure inside to inside of the bead seat, and not the outside...

  • Does a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire use a 12 Inch Wheel
Yes, a 4.80-12 trailer tire uses a 12 inch diameter wheel that is 4 inches wide. The 4.80 spec is the width of the tire. I have attached a link to all of our 12 inch x 4 inch trailer wheels for you to check out. They come with either a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern or a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Make sure you choose a wheel with the same bolt pattern as your trailer hub or as your previous wheels. I have also attached a help article on how to determine your bolt pattern for you to check out.

  • Can a 4.80-12 Tire Be Upgraded to a Larger and Higher Capacity Tire
There's no reason you couldn't upgrade your 4.80-12 Load Range B tires with Load Range C's like the part # AM10062. These would fit the exact same as your current tire with the only difference being that they have a higher Load Range. You could also go with a 5.30-12 like the part # AM10068 as long as you have room for a tire that is just a tiny bit taller and wider. This tire is 5.5 inches wide and 21.9 inches tall, whereas the 4.8-12s are 4.9 inches wide and 20.7 inches tall.

  • Switching From 4.80-8 to 4.80-12 Trailer Wheels and Tires With a 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern
First, I do recommend verifying exactly how much clearance you have. The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 you are looking at is 20.7" tall while your Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30020 is 16.1" tall. The 4.6" difference will be 2.3" loss of fender clearance. It is recommended to have 3" of vertical clearance for suspension travel with the taller tires. The wheel that comes on the set above is lug piloted and will center...
