Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

These fit and work great! Wanted to replace the olds before they got too bad. For the value, buying all new wheels was clearly the simplest solution. Thanks etrailer for shipping them promptly, as promised! [Thumbs up] 722273

Recently got me a used Jon Boat trailer and noticed the 8 inch tires were dry rotted. While looking for shackle bushings found these bigger 12 inch for cheaper than local prices. My friend said going to a bigger tire puts less stress on the bearings so I got me a couple. Fit was perfect and it actually set the trailer and boat higher so I can see it in the rearview mirror better. Havent had them on the road yet but expect they should be ok. 642579

Wheels came quickly, tires mounted and ready to go. They installed on my 4'x8' folding trailer without a hiccup. The wheels and tires worked as expected with no issues on their maiden 600 mile round trip. 640042

Have used them for a year now. Right after we bought them we put them on a trailer for my small catamaran (1000lbs, boat and trailer) and took it to Florida from Ohio. Made the trip back and forth and several trips to Michigan throughout the summer without a problem! 607278

Cheaper than Northern Tool. Shipping was cheaper and/or free. I needed quicker shipping (spent over $100). Arrived quickly. Tires fit. Arrived inflated to correct pressure. Thanks! 603043

- AM30540

One tire was not mounted on the back side, about a half inch from the rim. This is obvious to a casual glance and should have not been shipped. Extremely poor product quality control! My attempt to make the tire mounted and round was unsuccessful due to the paint on the inside of the rim. The paint was too sticky to get the tire to pop out. 576300

I ordered a variety of products from etrailer.com to help build a custom rooftop tent trailer for a 8 week road trip. These included 2 different jacks to stabilize the trailer, wheel blocks, coupler and hitch locks, and a receiver/hitch for installation on my 2008 Honda Fit Sport. While researching and building my trailer, I was very pleased with the variety of products available on etrailer.com. It quickly became my go-to, one-stop site for all my trailer related parts. After 8 weeks on the road, all the components are still going strong and I am looking forward to many more years of adventures with my trailer! The specialty coupler and hitch locks were great for peace of mind on such a long trip, especially for the numerous occasions where my trailer sat unattended for a long duration while my girlfriend and I were out hiking, climbing, or backpacking 465958

  • Size 4.80-12 Tire/Rim Recommendations for Pop-Up Camper
The main issue people run into when switching to larger tires is that there isn't enough clearance, but if you have been using the larger tires for years without a problem, then it sounds like the size isn't an issue for your trailer. The next factor you'll want to consider when buying new tires is the bolt pattern of your wheel. Our 4.80-12 tires come in a 4 on 4” bolt pattern (4 lugs) and a 5 on 4-1/2” bolt pattern (5 lugs). I've attached an article on how to determine your bolt pattern....

If your trailer axle is rated for 1,200 lbs gross weight then a load range B tire is going to be the best choice. We have two white spoke wheel options with a load range B tire. If you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern hub you will need the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire and Wheel, # AM30580. If you have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern hub, you will need the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire and Wheel, # AM30540. Two of these wheel and tire combinations are rated for up to 1570 lbs...

  • Recommended 4.80-12 Tires for a Fiber Stream Camper Trailer
The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30540 is my recommendation for a Fiber Stream Camper Trailer. This is a pre-mounted combo that comes ready to mount on the trailer. It comes with a bias ply tire which will be fine for this trailer and the only option for this size pre-mounted. It will also have plenty of capacity for the weight without going over and causing a rough ride. They are both (tire/wheel) backed by warranties as well.

  • Replacement Trailer Tire and Wheel Recommendation for a 4x8 Harbor Freight Trailer
As long as the bolt pattern on your trailer is 4 on 4 inch and the tire size on your trailer tire is 4.80-12 the Kenda 4.80-12 Tire with Wheel part # AM30540 would work well on your trailer. If you are unsure what your bolt pattern is check out the FAQ article I attached that details how to determine this. If your tire has a 5.30-12 tire size instead you would want the part # AM30780.

  • If Trailer Wheel Attaches with Wheel Bolts Does the Pilot Diameter of Wheel Matter for Replacement
Since you have wheel bolts instead of lug nuts to secure the wheels of your trailer you will need to find a wheel with the exact same size pilot hole since your wheels are hub-centric, meaning they center on hub with the pilot hole. Of the 12 inch rims we offer, none of them match your pilot diameter. They all have 3.19 inch pilot diameters. The biggest size rim we have with a matching pilot diameter would be a 10 inch rim. • Can Trailer Tire Types By Mixed
It is not a good idea to mix types of trailer tires. Radial trailer tires usually run cooler than bias ply types. It is one thing to use a different tire type for the spare, where if it is used it will be only for a short distance/time. But for ongoing use we recommend staying with one tire type/size/load rating to ensure no one tire has more heat/weight stress than another. • Backspacing of Trailer Wheel and Tire Combo part # AM30540
The backspacing of the wheel that comes with the wheel and tire combo part # AM30540 that you referenced is 2-1/4 inches. This is calculated by taking the width of the wheel (4 inches) adding an additional inch for the lip on the wheel and then dividing by two. It's that easy to calculate because all trailer wheels like this one have an offset of zero.

  • Can 8 Inch Trailer Tires be Replaced with 12 Inch Trailer Tires
Hey, thanks. You're not so bad yourself! Going to a larger tire size is possible but there are a few things to think about. Chief among these things is clearance. When going from an 8 inch tire to a 12 inch tire the diameter will increase by 4.4 inches. This means that if there is anything above the tire such as a fender the larger tire may not fit. Even if you have the clearance now you also have to account for the travel of the suspension. The width between the two sizes is not...

  • Can 12 Inch Trailer Tires and Wheels be Used in Place of 8 Inch Tires and Wheels
A 12 inch tire and wheel is going to be over 4-1/2 inches taller than a 4.80-8 tire, half of which is applied to the top of the tire so you will need more than 2.3 inches between the tops of the existing tires and the fenders plus the distance needed for the suspension to travel so estimate 3-1/2 to 4 inches at most. If you have that much space above the existing tires then you could go to a 4.80-12 such as # AM30540.

But if you are willing to remove the old spindles and have new ones welded on then I do have a solution for you. First for the spindles: I recommend a BT8 spindle # TRU97FR for a square stub or # TRU94FR for a round stub.
