Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Can I use a Trailer Wheel with a 3-1/4 Inch Pilot Hole to Replace a Wheel with a 3 Inch Pilot Hole
If the wheel is stud-piloted, then the pilot hole hole does not matter. However, if the wheel is centered using the pilot hole, then you will need to find a wheel with the same size. Check the holes for the bolts or studs. If they are beveled then the wheel is stud piloted. The lug nut should have a matching bevel. Other than that, just make sure the bolt-pattern is the same as the current wheel.

  • Recommendation for 4.80-12 Size Tires for Shoreland'r Boat Trailer
We have several options to replace your existing 4.80-12 size tires. Based on my research, that tire has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern. I have attached a link to all of our 4.80-12 size tires with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern for you. All of the tires we offer in that size come already on a wheel. To replace your existing Load Range B tire and wheel, I recommend the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 Inch White Wheel # AM30580. This tire has a 785 pound max load...

  • Adjustable 2-Inch Ball Mount to Allow More Clearance for Garaging Boat Trailer
It sounds like you need a ball mount with more than 3-inches of drop to allow your boat's windshield to clear the bottom of your open garage door as you move the trailer inside. If I understand things correctly it is just the combination of the windshield's height and the driveway's angle that are the issue. I suggest an adjustable 2-inch ball mount. One of these will allow you to lower the ball and therefore also the trailer's tongue when you need to garage the boat and trailer and...

  • Can a Load Range C Trailer Tire be Used in Place of a Load Range B Trailer Tire
If the load range B tires will sufficiently cover the gross trailer weight capacity then that is what you should go with. Going with a higher capacity tire would not allow the trailer to carry more weight because it is still limited by the axle and suspension. You could go with the higher capacity tire but with more plies in the construction it could heat up faster and you could also experience a stiffer ride. I have included a link to the right to our help article on trailer tires for you.

  • Lowering Height of Cargo Trailer to Fit in Garage
Going with a 12 inch wheel versus a 15 inch wheel is only going to lower your trailer by half the difference in diameter, which in this case would be 1-1/2 inches, which won't be enough to get the trailer into your garage. Your friend's idea of using PVC pipe as rollers is intriguing, but I would measure the height from the bottom of the axle to the highest point of the trailer, to see if that distance plus the diameter of the rollers is shorter than the height of the garage door opening....

  • Can a Trailer Wheel with Smaller Center Pilot Hole be Used than Stock Wheel with Larger Pilot Hole
On a wheel that attaches to the hub using lug nuts, the center pilot hole of the wheel does not have to be an exact size. As long as it will still fit over the center of he hub like it is supposed to you can use the smaller size because the wheel centers on the hub using the lug nuts.

  • How to Know When to Replace the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire AM30580
There are wear bars between the treads of the # AM30580 that once the tread of the tire has worn down to that level it would be time to replace them. Look for a raised rubber section between the treads of the tires that are higher than the base of the treads. That being said most trailer tires don't end up wearing out before its time to replace them. Typically age is what causes them to need replacement. You want to replace them at around 6 years of age or if you see dry rotting or cracking.

  • Does the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch Rim Come Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

On the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch White Wheel, # AM30580, the center hole of the wheel measures 3.19 inches. • Which Load Range Tires for Light Duty Utility Trailer w/ 1450 lb GVWR
Since the Load Range B rating of 1570 per axle and the Load Range C rating of 1980 lbs per axle are both above the GVWR of the trailer in question, no it doesn't really matter. However if it were me personally, I'd go with the Load Range C # AM30660 over the # AM30580 load range B. A little overkill never hurt anything, especially if the trailer should ever get accidentally overloaded. To learn more about trailer tires, click the provided link.

  • Size 4.80-12 Tire/Rim Recommendations for Pop-Up Camper
The main issue people run into when switching to larger tires is that there isn't enough clearance, but if you have been using the larger tires for years without a problem, then it sounds like the size isn't an issue for your trailer. The next factor you'll want to consider when buying new tires is the bolt pattern of your wheel. Our 4.80-12 tires come in a 4 on 4” bolt pattern (4 lugs) and a 5 on 4-1/2” bolt pattern (5 lugs). • What is the Difference Between Load Range B and C Trailer Tires of the Same Size
Trailer tires that are the same size but with different load ratings will have different capacities. A load range C tire will have a higher capacity than a load range B tire of the same size. The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 Inch White Wheel, # AM30660, that you have referenced has a capacity of 990 pounds at 90 psi and it is a load range C. • Will a Higher Capacity Trailer Tire Last Longer on a 4x8 Trailer Harbor Freight Trailer
The first problem is that you are running lower air pressure than what the tire is rated for. Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to the maximum air pressure as indicated on the tire. The reason is that trailer tires are constructed with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires. Because of the thicker sidewall, if the tires are under-inflated there will be more heat build up and than can cause the tires to fail and as you are seeing wear out quickly. If your trailer weight...
