Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Recommendation for 4.80-12 Size Tires for Shorelandr Boat Trailer
We have several options to replace your existing 4.80-12 size tires. Based on my research, that tire has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern. I have attached a link to all of our 4.80-12 size tires with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern for you. All of the tires we offer in that size come already on a wheel. To replace your existing Load Range B tire and wheel, I recommend the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 Inch White Wheel # AM30580. This tire has a 785 pound max load at...

  • Recommended Replacement Wheel and Tire for a Triton LTWCI X Trailer
I checked online and it does look like your Triton LTWCI X trailer uses a 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern. You may want to measure and confirm this. Otherwise the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B item # AM30580 you were looking at would be a great replacement. We also have this tire wheel combo in a galvanized rim item # AM30670. This will protect your wheel against rust. For a jack to change your trailer's tires, I recommend the Powerbuilt Unijack...

  • Can Trailer Wheel with Pilot Diameter of 3.19 inch Replace Wheel with Pilot Diameter 3.25 inch
As long as your trailer wheel is secured to the hub with lug nuts and not wheel bolts you can use a trailer wheel with a slightly different pilot diameter. Since you mentioned lug nuts you're totally fine to use a wheel and tire like the Kenda 4.80-12 on a 12 inch wheel part # AM30580 which has a pilot diameter of 3.19 inch.

  • How to Know When to Replace the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire AM30580
There are wear bars between the treads of the # AM30580 that once the tread of the tire has worn down to that level it would be time to replace them. Look for a raised rubber section between the treads of the tires that are higher than the base of the treads. That being said most trailer tires don't end up wearing out before its time to replace them. Typically age is what causes them to need replacement. You want to replace them at around 6 years of age or if you see dry rotting or cracking.

  • Does the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch Rim Come Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

  • Can a Load Range C Trailer Tire be Used in Place of a Load Range B Trailer Tire
If the load range B tires will sufficiently cover the gross trailer weight capacity then that is what you should go with. Going with a higher capacity tire would not allow the trailer to carry more weight because it is still limited by the axle and suspension. You could go with the higher capacity tire but with more plies in the construction it could heat up faster and you could also experience a stiffer ride. I have included a link to the right to our help article on trailer tires for you.

  • 5 On 4-1/2 Trailer Tire and Wheel Replacement With 3.25 Pilot Hole
Be sure to triple check your measurement of the end of the hub cap to make sure before you purchase. The largest pilot hole I have for that size wheel and tire is from Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30060 . The pilot diameter is 2.8". It's a 4.00-8 Non Radial Trailer Tire and has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. I do have a 12 inch tire with a pilot hole measuring 3.19" # AM30580. If you have a fender you may have to remove it for it to fit.

  • Do You Have A Tire And Wheel With A Center Hole Of 2.875 Inches For A Hawkeye Leisure Boat Trailer
On a 12 inch wheel, there is two choices of center hole sizes available. The 12 inch wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern has a center hole of 3.19 inches. The 12 inch wheel with the 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern has a center hole of 2.84 inches. On the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch White Wheel, # AM30580, the center hole of the wheel measures 3.19 inches. • Can 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tires Be Upgraded to 4.80-12 Tires
In order to upgrade from 4.80/4.00-8 tires to 4.80-12 tires you'll need an additional 4" of clearance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender. That said, you also need to allow about 3" for suspension travel. If you have this much space I recommend using the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30580. I won't be able to confirm this with the information provided unfortunately.

  • Can A Wheel With A Larger Pilot Hole Work As A Replacement For A Wheel With A Smaller Pilot Hole?
The 2.8" pilot hole will typically be found on wheels in the 8" to 10" range, so having it on a 12" wheel is a little odd. With that being said, most trailer wheels, if not all in this size, are lug centric and are centered by the torque of the lug bolts. This means the pilot holes is less important than that on vehicle wheels, which are hub centric and use the pilot hole to center the wheel. Due to this, you will have no issue using a wheel with a larger pilot hole diameter, like the Kenda...

  • Can I use a Trailer Wheel with a 3-1/4 Inch Pilot Hole to Replace a Wheel with a 3 Inch Pilot Hole
If the wheel is stud-piloted, then the pilot hole hole does not matter. However, if the wheel is centered using the pilot hole, then you will need to find a wheel with the same size. Check the holes for the bolts or studs. If they are beveled then the wheel is stud piloted. The lug nut should have a matching bevel. Other than that, just make sure the bolt-pattern is the same as the current wheel.

  • Would Load Range B 4.80-12 Tire Have Enough Capacity for 1330 lb Boat/Trailer
A 4.80-12 Wheel/Tire combo like # AM30580 would provide a 4.80-12 Load Range B tire on a 12x4 white spoke wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The tire has a 785 lb per tire/1570 per axle capacity. If the fully loaded weight of your trailer is under 1570 lbs, you'll be fine with a load range B tire. This being said, the price differential between the Load Range B # AM30580 and the Load Range C # AM30660 is miniscule. The load range C would offer a 990 lb per tire/1980 lb per axle...
