Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I got the 5.30 X 12 inch tire/wheel combo, load range D, for a small utility trailer, so they are fine for the intended use. The tires are nice but the wheels are chinese made and the galvanized coating is not as nice appearing as other wheels in my garage that are 20+ years old. Like I said, they are going to be fine for the "Old Reliable" trailer on which they are mounted, but I just hope that the galvanized finish stands the test of time. The price was good, with no shipping cost, and etrailer.com was fast on the order and the wheels got here pretty quick.... 146942

How did your galvanized coating hold up over time. Do you think the white wheel would have been better?

Thanks for your feedback Lamar, overall we have received better feedback on the traditional steel wheels that are painted. The galvanized coated wheels have not been as highly rated as the wheels that are likely like your 20 year old wheels in your garage.

A while back I purchased a used 5 x 8 trailer. The wheels were starting to rust and the tires were shot! The "tire store" down town wanted a little over $50. to mount a new tire on my rusty wheels.... I happened to find Etrailer on line. I got brand new tires mounted on galvanized wheels for about the same price! They are so easy to deal with! I ended up replacing everything on the trailer (bearings, lights, springs, tires, wheels etc.) from etrailer! Better sit down for this one: They even called me at home to see how the project was going, and if there was anything else they could do to help....When was the last time someone did that! Certainly not in my lifetime (and I'm over 70!). It doesn't get any better than this! Go on their website (or call them), get what you need, and be done with it...... Thanks etrailer! 635549

I purchased two tires with wheels for my boat trailer. I've used eTrailer before and always have a good experience. The prices and service can't be beat! The current COVID situation has caused most of my items to arrive late recently, but not the etrailer order, yours arrived right on schedule! Thanks for your attention to detail and customer service. The wheels and tires are excellent as well! I will continue to buy from you folks, keep up the good work. 801336

We purchased these tires/rims to replace the 12 year old tires that came with our pontoon boat trailer. These were a perfect match for size and lug nut pattern and worked out great. The valve stems are metal, which is an upgrade from the old ones and that will keep the red squirrels from chewing them like they did with our old tires. Shipping was super fast and free too! 711053

  • Trailer Wheel and Tire Size 5.30-12 Recommendation for 2003 SNOWBEAR TRAILER
In the size of 5.30-12 the best option we have with the highest capacity is the Kenda Wheel and Tire part # AM30861 which has a tire with a Load Range of D and a tire capacity of 1,250 lbs at 105 psi. I attached a review video for this wheel combo for you to check out as well.

  • 5.30-12 Trailer Wheel and Tire Recommendation for 2,000 lb Boat Trailer
Going with a higher rated tire capacity than needed doesn't really gain you anything, but since you would be right near the capacity of a Load Range C I would go ahead and go with a Load Range D. Which for that we have two options and they are both Kenda. For a silver wheel (what I would go with) we have the part # AM30861 and for white wheel you would want the part # AM30859.

For the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30861 (size not listed on the chart) you will use a torque range of 75 to 90-ft-lbs. If you need a torque wrench we offer # ALL944001.

  • How Long Do Trailer Tires Typically Last
Trailer tires rarely actually wear out due to mileage. Typically they get old enough that they start to dry rot which turns into leaking and then also can turn into the tire failing on the highway. Right around 6 years is the standard recommended trailer tire life. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • Will a 10 Inch Brake Drum Fit Behind 12 Inch Wheels
A 12 inch wheel like the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30861 that you are looking at is compatible with 7 inch brake drum assemblies. A 10 inch assembly will likely be too large to fit with this 12 inch wheel. If you want to go up to a 13 inch tire and wheel combo I recommend taking a look at the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM31994. This wheel features the same galvanized finish and 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern as...

  • Will Kenda Wheel and Tire AM30861 Work Well on Pontoon Boat Trailer
The Kenda 5.30-12 Wheel and Tire part # AM30861 would be a great option most likely but you need to make sure the tire size and weight capacity match. The tire size is 5.30-12. You would need to check the sidewall of your current tire to determine if that is what you have and what you would need as a replacement. The weight capacity of the tire is 1,250 lbs so you would need to make sure you trailer loaded weighs less than 2,500 lbs.

  • Recommended Replacement Tire/Wheel for Boat Trailer for Interstate Highway Travel
Since you want to make long-distance highway trips with your boat you will be best served by a tire that can safely handle faster highway speeds above 65-mph. This combination can handle 1,050-lbs at 80-psi and it is rated for speeds up to 81-mph. This is an excellent choice so long as the weight rating is enough for your boat and trailer. • What Types of Tires Should be Used on Trailers
P rated tires are not to be used on a trailer at all. You really need to swap them out for an LT or ST tire size like you mentioned. P mean passenger vehicle, ST means special trailer, and LT means light truck which can be used in trailer applications although generally ST is preferred. I do not know your tire size currently but email me back and I'll recommend you the best option we have.

  • 12 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire Recommendation with 5 on 4-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern that is Galvanized
We have the part # AM30861 which is a 12 inch trailer wheel that is galvanized that has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and a tire size of 5.30-12. The pilot diameter is 3.19 inches which is larger than the 2.75 inch you mentioned but that should not be an issue as long as your current wheel are held on with lug nuts and not a wheel bolt that threads into the hub. The lug nut setup is way more common so that is most likely what you'd have.

For a wheel and tire you would want the part # AM30670 which has this tire size and a wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. • Best 12 Inch Galvanized Tires and Rims for Small Boat Trailer
A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. Radial tires generally run cooler than bias tires, which usually leads to a longer life for radials.
