Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A while back I purchased a used 5 x 8 trailer. The wheels were starting to rust and the tires were shot! The "tire store" down town wanted a little over $50. to mount a new tire on my rusty wheels....

I happened to find Etrailer on line. I got brand new tires mounted on galvanized wheels for about the same price! They are so easy to deal with! I ended up replacing everything on the trailer (bearings, lights, springs, tires, wheels etc.) from etrailer!

Better sit down for this one: They even called me at home to see how the project was going, and if there was anything else they could do to help....When was the last time someone did that! Certainly not in my lifetime (and I'm over 70!).

It doesn't get any better than this! Go on their website (or call them), get what you need, and be done with it......

Thanks etrailer!

My first impressions of the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D - AM30861 are good, everything delivered as expected. Removed old wheels and bolted these on, noticed there is a label recommending to check and re-tighten lug nuts at the first 10-25-50-100 miles. I chose this wheel/tire because it was the highest load rating for my 4'x10' Utility/ATV trailer. I hope the galvanized finish lasts better than paint and I personally think it looks better than painted wheels. I purchased 3 total to have a spare on the trailer and mounted it with a MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier for 3" x 5" Trailer Frames - 4-Lug and 5-Lug Wheels - MT70214. I also purchased a Master Lock Spare Tire Carrier Lock - 262DAT, but unfortunately the bolts were too long on the spare tire carrier and the lock would not fit. Next time I am at the hardware store I will get a shorter bolt so it will fit.

by:

Great tire/wheel combo. Wheels have metal valve stems. Lowest price in the Web!

by:

I bought the tires for spare. I brought with me 1 tire just in case my old one goes flat when I go fishing. Tires look good as I expected, fast shipping, correct rating for the weight of my boat. I am happy with the purchase from etrailer.

by:

Tires/rims arrived on day estimated at time of order.
Quite happy with products as they easily meet expectations.

by:

Great product, reasonable price, and shipped free. This set of wheels and tires was exactly what I needed, and all I had to do was take them out of the box and bolt them on. Couldn’t have been any more convenient.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for! Quick shipping! Excellent customer service!

by:

The wheels are extremely out of balance and cause bouncing at certain speeds.

Comments
You mentioned that the wheels are out of balance and I had question that I wanted to ask. Have they always been out of balance or was it something that happened over time.
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 03/29/2022
Comments
Always have been out of balance, and I had already relayed that information upon purchase, and on a review or phone call I dont remember. Hope it helps.
-- comment by: Tim - 03/29/2022
Comments
I do know that what the tire manufacturers do is basically mount the tire so that the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. You can have them balanced however when you do you will want to make sure that a pin plate adapter is used. This mimics the way that a lug-centric wheel is mounted to a hub.

Easy ordering, prompt shipping, quality packaging & product
Chrome wheels will dress up boat trailer when installed.
Just need some warm weather now!

by:

Tires are great. It was a little disturbing to get an email from George J one day saying the tires wouldn’t be shipped till October 3rd.
Then the very next day getting an email from George J telling me me the tires were shipped. How does that happen???

Comments
Oh Goodness! What probably happened was the tires were showing out of stock with our next order coming from the manufacturer in October. We got a shipment in our warehouse the very same day, so it probably was not updated in our system yet. I apologize for the crazy mix-up!

Great tire on a great wheel. Nice valve stem too!

by:

I use my trailer for handyman work, So some days it carries a few sheets of plywood and others 600lbs of roofing. I needed a high load capacity tire package and they look better then my old boat trailer like wheels. I am going to rewire my trailer and guess were I'm shopping for lights you guessed right eetrailer.

by:

5 lug on 4-1/2” bolt pattern worked w/ new 1” thick aluminum adaptor plates that converted obsolete 5 on 5-1/2 to modern 5 on 4-1/2. The new wheels and tires completed my restoration of a 1958 Tee Née boat trailer. Great service high quality product. Your video presentation, of the wheels and tires, was good assurance that we were on the same page before ordering. Thank you etrailer.

by:

I got the 5.30 X 12 inch tire/wheel combo, load range D, for a small utility trailer, so they are fine for the intended use. The tires are nice but the wheels are chinese made and the galvanized coating is not as nice appearing as other wheels in my garage that are 20+ years old. Like I said, they are going to be fine for the "Old Reliable" trailer on which they are mounted, but I just hope that the galvanized finish stands the test of time. The price was good, with no shipping cost, and etrailer.com was fast on the order and the wheels got here pretty quick....

Comments
How did your galvanized coating hold up over time. Do you think the white wheel would have been better?
-- comment by: Dan - 08/12/2015

Comments
Thanks for your feedback Lamar, overall we have received better feedback on the traditional steel wheels that are painted. The galvanized coated wheels have not been as highly rated as the wheels that are likely like your 20 year old wheels in your garage.

by:

Placed my order hoping I would get it in a couple of weeks before I left for Maine.
Instead I got it in a "WEEK", how good is that for customer service! I also ordered the spare tire carrier FSTC1000301which came in the same shipment. I mounted it as you can see and it worked out great. Thanks George

by:

Excellent quality and very good price. Super fast shipping. Recommend highly

by:

Excellent product but even better service from eTrailer especially from KarenC. When I found out the original tires I ordered were back ordered Karen found me a replacement and got them shipped out that day so I was able to get them on my trailer a couple days later.
GREAT JOB Karen!

Thanks Again!
Joe

Comments
I figure it is your job to send these out after a year is up but it would be hard to saying anything more than the tires are still going around . Everything is as expected but the biggest reason I sent in the reply was to give Karen some extra kind words since she was the one that made sure I got the tires I needed without a delay. To me that says a lot about your company and the service you provide. That you care about your customers! Im sure like a lot of your products you get them from many so saying something good about the tires does not mean anything but good things about your customer care should mean 10x more than the product.

by:

Thank you. I appreciate getting the parts I need and they are good.

by:

Just got these yesterday......dropped off at the gate as requested. Picked them up today. Will put them on my boat trailer in a bit. Might even send a picture as they look good. Price and promptness of delivery was excellent on both counts. Etrailer has yet to fail me and I'm not up to date with reviewing my purchases, but I find no fault with them. Good outfit!

by:

I couldn't believe how quickly I received my order.

by:

Tires work very good. Made trailer pull much better than before. Great quality.

by:

OUTSTANDING customer service, communication and EXCELLENT pricing...
Won't shop for trailer tires anywhere else...EVER!

by:

The quality of their tires and wheels are exceptional. I got the hot dipped galvanized rims and they are the real deal as opposed to other places that have a spray on paint that only looks galvanized. The e-trailer price on the 5.30 x 12 Load Class D tires was way less than I could find elsewhere and shipping was free.

by:

I absolutely had to have new tires for my pontoon trailer by this weekend. I ordered late Sunday and Wednesday evening they are here and mounted . etrailer came through once again as expected with a superior product at the best price around ahead of schedule. I couldn't even buy the tires locally for what I bought two tires and rims shipped to my door from etrailer. I tell everyone if your looking for your trailer related products elsewhere your simply wasting your time and more importantly you money.

  • How Long Do Trailer Tires Typically Last
Trailer tires rarely actually wear out due to mileage. Typically they get old enough that they start to dry rot which turns into leaking and then also can turn into the tire failing on the highway. Right around 6 years is the standard recommended trailer tire life. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

We have exactly what you described in your question with the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Wheel # AM30861. This Kenda bias tire features a Load Range D (maximum 1,250 pounds at 105 psi) and is mounted onto a 12" galvanized steel wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. I have attached a short video review that you can check out as well.

  • What Pressure Should Trailer Tires be Kept At
We always recommend to run the maximum air pressure stated on the sidewall of the trailer tire. That is the safest thing to do because then you have the maximum weight capacity covered for any type of load you will be hauling. This prevents heat build up and diminished capacity as well as provides best ride quality for the trailer.

You are correct that the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM30861 you were looking at are indeed ready to be bolted on to your trailer and will not need anything to make them ready to use. • 12 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire Recommendation with 5 on 4-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern that is Galvanized
We have the part # AM30861 which is a 12 inch trailer wheel that is galvanized that has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and a tire size of 5.30-12. The pilot diameter is 3.19 inches which is larger than the 2.75 inch you mentioned but that should not be an issue as long as your current wheel are held on with lug nuts and not a wheel bolt that threads into the hub. The lug nut setup is way more common so that is most likely what you'd have.

  • What Types of Tires Should be Used on Trailers
P rated tires are not to be used on a trailer at all. You really need to swap them out for an LT or ST tire size like you mentioned. P mean passenger vehicle, ST means special trailer, and LT means light truck which can be used in trailer applications although generally ST is preferred. I do not know your tire size currently but email me back and I'll recommend you the best option we have.
