Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Galvanized coating on wheel poorly applied. It has collected in “blobs” on the wheel. Surely this imbalances the wheel unnecessarily. Would not recommend.

Well that doesnt look good! Unfortunately this is very common with these rims and the galvanizing process. These are dipped then drip dry. Let me get you over to our customer service department for them to assist you.

e-trailer delivered on time in a couple days! Great service… and I would but thru them again!

Purchased trailer wheels/tires. Tires look fine (China origin). Galvanized rims look pretty bad with weld marks showing on in/out sides. Hoping the bead seal is good … will only know over time…

Etrailer Expert

Katrina D.

Yeah, unfortunately, this is a very common issue with galvanized rims. When the steel or iron is dipped into zinc, it is then air dried. Which does not always come out looking the best.

Changed the boat trailer into a flat bed trailer. The new tires and wheels makes it look very nice.

Glad I found you guys got exactly what I needed, was a little nervous about ordering on line but you tutorial on how to measure bolt distance made the difference

Joe G.

I bought it as a spare, luckily I havent had to use it so it looks just like new

Happy with new wheels and tires

The tires look awesome on his trailer.

Thanks for your follow-up. Attached is a photo of the new wheels/tires mounted on my trailer. The 35+ year old girl hasn't looked that good in a long time. Can't wait to tow something and not have to pump air in the leaking rims before hitting the road. Thanks for the excellent product line and fast service.

Rick R.

The Kenda tires are not working out as expected. One has developed a slow leak, with no obvious damage to the tire, such as nail or puncture. I havent had a chance to water tank test it to see if the problem is the valve, bead, wheel, or tire.Have you had any other similar problems reported with Kenda tires that would indicate where to focus?

Etrailer Expert

Rachael H.

Thanks for the follow up Rick, we have not heard of any issues specific to these tires. I think the water tank test sounds like the best way to figure out where the slow leak is. Thanks for your feedback.

When the tire alone sells for $90 elsewhere, it's a no brainier not to get a new wheel and tire combo for $112 with free shipping! Kenda tires have always held up very well for me.

Thank you. They are very nice and they look awesome. Thank you again.

I ordered tire and wheels for my trailer. The wheels existing on the trailer were 4 bolt patter from a 1965 Ford Falcon. The tires and wheels were fine except the bolt pattern did not line up. I can not use these and was told by someone at Your company to measure the bolt pattern which I can do. I certainly don’t need 4 tires, the tires are fine. It’s the wheels that don’t fit. I should not have to send measurements if your company had sent wheel for the specific car I mentioned. I know these to be correct because I took them off that car that had been in the family since new.

I did measure as well as I could centerline to center line and measured 3 and 1/4 inches. I don’t think that’s the best way to order wheels because there are so many iteration close but just off a bit. But I’d like to have wheels that fit. Right now I have a nice set of wheels and tires from you which I can’t use.

I have attached a help article with the easiest way to measure bolt pattern. I do want to point out that etrailer only sells trailer tires and wheels. These are not recommended for vehicles of any kind.

No problems with the order or the tires and rims. New deck, new paint, new lights and last but not least new rims and tires.

I'm very pleased with my rims & tires purchase. I received them quicker than expected. I would definitely purchase more items from etrailer.

I live in a fairly rural community in IL. I have a little 4'×8' trailer I could not find tires for anywhere. Even my tire hoarding contacts didn't have any. The obsolete tire was a 155 R13 78S. I went to 4 local stores and only 1 had a 13 inch tire and only 1 in stock. Because there would have been a size difference I was going to need 2 tires. The price without tax was 79.00 for each tire. They had one 13 inch tire on a rim in stock, however it was a 5 bolt and I needed a 4 bolt. My store couldn't even order them. So I turned to the internet and found etrailer. I found these AM3S130 tires on rims with a 4 bolt pattern. I was hoping they'd fit under my fenders, but they were my only option I found in my hunt. I figured if they were too tall I'd just have the fenders removed and welded back on at a higher height. I was ecstatic to see free shipping for my order over $100. Shipping was fast and the tires were perfect fit! I'm ready to mow yards and hit the auctions again. Well, if the State of IL ever opens up again. Thank you etrailer!

The rims seem very rough. Time will tell how the tires and rims hold up.

Excellent quality at an excellent price, showed up to the house in a timely manor, bolted on the trailer and back to work!

Does just fine as a trailer tire

Holding up fine

great tires for home made trailer and f enders...

Not good.oil buddy bearing kits [4]. Leak keep having to add oil every trip.

one employee ordered this thinking it was needed.
It has not yet been used. still sitting in our storage container.

I purchased these tires for my boat trailer. I trailer my boat approx. 1200 miles to Canada to go fishing. The shipping was quick, communications were good and the product was as described. They were easy to order using the instructions and diagrams provided on their website for the bolt pattern. They fit perfectly and I will order from etrailer again.

Prompt delivery. Excellent tire and rim. Making a BBQ trailer and it looks good.

We needed our tire before we left on vacation. I called to find out if they was possible.
They made it happen and our tire arrived in 3 days.

Love the price and fast shipping

Great wheel and tire for a an equally great price. Tremendous value as well.

  • Can Trailer Tire Size 155R12 Be Upgraded to ST175/80D13
If you go up to the taller tire size of ST175/80-13 like with the # AM3S130 you'll lose about 1.5 inches of fender clearance which may not be an issue but you'll want to make sure you have at least 3 inches when it's all said and done. It looks like you'd be fine but you'd want to verify this to be sure.

  • Factors to Consider When Increasing Wheels on a Trailer from 8 Inches to 13 Inches
The factors that you will want to consider when increasing your tire size are wheel bolt pattern, tire width, tire clearance and overall trailer height. You will want to keep the same bolt pattern as your current tires. The Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 Tire, # AM3S130, that you referenced has the same 4 on 4 bolt pattern as your current tires so that will work. The next thing to check is your tire width, or section width. Increasing the wheel size may increase the section width of the...

The Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3S130 you were looking at are a great choice for a boat trailer because of the galvanized wheel and durable bias ply tire. These Load Range C tires have a capacity of 1,360-lbs, so you'll want to make sure that your boat and trailer don't weigh more than 2700-lbs. If you have a heavier trailer than that, just let me know what the estimated weight is and I can make an alternate recommendation.

I do have an option for you to upgrade to larger wheels/tires in the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel part # AM3S130 which is similar to the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel part # AM3S334 you were asking for. • Upgrading to 175/80-13 Tires On a Starcraft Stardust Pop-Up
The 175/80-13 tire measures 24" diameter x 6.6" wide whereas the 5.30-12 tire measures 21.9" diameter x 5.5" wide. Therefore, you will need to account for an increase in height of about 1" and width of about .5". We recommend at least 3" on top of the tire to the fender and 1" from the side of the tire to the frame. I recommend going with the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel part # AM3S120.

  • Can You Put a 13" Tire on a 12" Wheel
No, you would not be able to put a 13" tire on a 12" rim. If you are wanting to switch from 12" to 13" tires, you will also need to get larger rims designed to be used with 13" tires. 13" rims are not only larger in diameter, but they are also wider. Since you have a 4-lug pattern, you would need something like the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S130. This would upsize both the tire and wheel to 13".

This new size will only be slightly narrower and about the same diameter as the tires you have now so there will be no fit issues with this new size.
