Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Got three tires with rim assemblies. They were packaged well and look good. After getting them on my boat trailer (one is a spare), I checked the date code. They were produced Jan 2023. Tires should be replaced for wear as well for age.

I am extremely disappointed with etrailer for passing off year and a half old tires as new. Especially as there was a two month delay from the order date to what they claim was “out of stock” and waiting two months for delivery.

by:

When the tire alone sells for $90 elsewhere, it's a no brainier not to get a new wheel and tire combo for $112 with free shipping! Kenda tires have always held up very well for me.

Excellent! Everything about these wheels and tires are great a year in.

by:

I bought these for my pontoon boat trailer, and they've been great! The trailer rides smoothly, and the galvanized coating on the wheels have ensured that the wheels can go in and out of the water without concerns about rusting. I've very pleased with these tires and wheels.

by:

I could not find this size trailer tire on a 4 on 4 wheel anywhere else! I recently flipped the axles on my 2003 Jayco Qwest 10B pop up camper to gain a bit more ground clearance. I wanted to find bigger tires than the super small 12s that were in it. Etrailer was the only place I could find these tires. As for the tire: I put about 3000 miles on them so far. Rides smooth and controlled at highway speeds and over dirt roads. Great tire!

by:

I bought these wheels for my Harbor Freight trailer, 1 year ago. They have been fantastic!
I trailer a dirtbike(s) 150-300'lbs, and it rides so smooth in the back, I don't even know I have a trailer hooked to my car.
I did not trust the original tires for the speed I occasionally drive, they weren't 'safe' for me. The 13" Loadstars are massive in comparison, and give a Much better/smoother ride, and because they have a much higher speed rating, feel safe when going above the limit. I would buy again, 100%. Love them.

by:

Thanks for your follow-up. Attached is a photo of the new wheels/tires mounted on my trailer. The 35+ year old girl hasn't looked that good in a long time. Can't wait to tow something and not have to pump air in the leaking rims before hitting the road. Thanks for the excellent product line and fast service.

The Kenda tires are not working out as expected. One has developed a slow leak, with no obvious damage to the tire, such as nail or puncture. I havent had a chance to water tank test it to see if the problem is the valve, bead, wheel, or tire.Have you had any other similar problems reported with Kenda tires that would indicate where to focus?

Thanks for the follow up Rick, we have not heard of any issues specific to these tires. I think the water tank test sounds like the best way to figure out where the slow leak is. Thanks for your feedback.

Galvanized coating on wheel poorly applied. It has collected in “blobs” on the wheel. Surely this imbalances the wheel unnecessarily. Would not recommend.

Well that doesnt look good! Unfortunately this is very common with these rims and the galvanizing process. These are dipped then drip dry. Let me get you over to our customer service department for them to assist you.

Purchased trailer wheels/tires. Tires look fine (China origin). Galvanized rims look pretty bad with weld marks showing on in/out sides. Hoping the bead seal is good … will only know over time…

Yeah, unfortunately, this is a very common issue with galvanized rims. When the steel or iron is dipped into zinc, it is then air dried. Which does not always come out looking the best.

by:

No problems with the order or the tires and rims. New deck, new paint, new lights and last but not least new rims and tires.

Great looking and great performing tires and wheels at a great price. Shipping was very fast. The only suggestion I have is to balance the tire/wheel before they’re shipped.

by:

The trailer tire was what I ordered. It fit just as it needed to. It arrived just as stated in the email. I'm very satisfied.

by:

I ordered tire and wheels for my trailer. The wheels existing on the trailer were 4 bolt patter from a 1965 Ford Falcon. The tires and wheels were fine except the bolt pattern did not line up. I can not use these and was told by someone at Your company to measure the bolt pattern which I can do. I certainly don’t need 4 tires, the tires are fine. It’s the wheels that don’t fit. I should not have to send measurements if your company had sent wheel for the specific car I mentioned. I know these to be correct because I took them off that car that had been in the family since new.

I did measure as well as I could centerline to center line and measured 3 and 1/4 inches. I don’t think that’s the best way to order wheels because there are so many iteration close but just off a bit. But I’d like to have wheels that fit. Right now I have a nice set of wheels and tires from you which I can’t use.

I live in a fairly rural community in IL. I have a little 4'×8' trailer I could not find tires for anywhere. Even my tire hoarding contacts didn't have any. The obsolete tire was a 155 R13 78S. I went to 4 local stores and only 1 had a 13 inch tire and only 1 in stock. Because there would have been a size difference I was going to need 2 tires. The price without tax was 79.00 for each tire. They had one 13 inch tire on a rim in stock, however it was a 5 bolt and I needed a 4 bolt. My store couldn't even order them. So I turned to the internet and found etrailer. I found these AM3S130 tires on rims with a 4 bolt pattern. I was hoping they'd fit under my fenders, but they were my only option I found in my hunt. I figured if they were too tall I'd just have the fenders removed and welded back on at a higher height. I was ecstatic to see free shipping for my order over $100. Shipping was fast and the tires were perfect fit! I'm ready to mow yards and hit the auctions again. Well, if the State of IL ever opens up again. Thank you etrailer!
