I needed to replace a Shelby 5104 coupler on my 25 year old flatbed trailer. etrailer recommended this one (CA5400B) as a replacement. I ordered it and Joshua B got it shipped out in record time. The CA 5400 coupler is pretty much an exact copy of the Shelby 5104. The new one fit like a glove and had good instructions on weld locations and sizes. The problem I encountered on the replacement was the old coupler had been welded in just about every location possible forcing me to have to cut it up in small pieces for removal. I’m back on the road, thanks etrailer.

Joshua is awesome for sure! I'll make sure he sees your review. And man! Took some elbow grease to get that old coupler off to say the least - happy to hear you're back up and running though :) what do you haul?

by:

Very well made coupler. Better quality than the original one.

by:

Great to Deal with will be buying from again AAA++++

by:

Hasn't failed me yet and we've been using it religiously over the past year to haul scrap iron and derby cars. A little bit of silicone spray and TLC and it's still making me money. If it's still available when I need it, I'd still buy it. Nothing beats simplicity in a fast paced world. As for the quality, well, I just hope my welds last.

Well said, Junior! Sounds like it's working hard for you for sure -- here's to another solid year :)

by:

Had a professional certifies welder stick weld this on for me. Worth the 3 hundred to do it Works but hard to engage the ball lock. Have to make sure you are as far forward as possible to drop it on the ball. The lock is a pain to engage sometimes have strike it to get it to lock in

by:

thank you again for the correct parts the first time around. eTrailer is the best!

by:

Had to replace my coupler after an accident, this one worked as needed. Good quality.

by:

Works great replaced old tunge when you would load something it would pop off the ball of hitch.

by:

Great product! Can handle more weight than the one I took off.

by:

Website easy to use. Found exactly what I needed. Very fair price. I needed the coupler soon so I used 3 day shipping. Came when scheduled. Was correct piece. I could not find this piece in my town. One of the trailer repair shops told me about the website. Will definitely use again when I need something for my trailers. Don’t have a picture but it looks like it did when the trailer was new.

@David Happy to hear your coupler is still working as it should. Come back anytime you need anything.

by:

Just purchased this coupler for the lowbed I am getting ready to rebuild. Like the look and the price of the coupler. Can't wait to cut away the mess the prior owner welded on. figuring the new coupler, jack, safety chains and wiring coupler box will make this a nice complete lowbed trailer to fill my needs for moving my 4x4 Cub Cadet tractor around for working on our properties.

by:

Product is good the shipping was way to slow I ordered it on the 5th and watched it sit for 3 days before getting packaged and finally sent out it said when I perchised it the I would receive it by the 10th so it didn’t come until the 12th so it was to late had to buy another one so now I don’t need it

by:

Exact replacement for my 10,000 lb (gross trailer weight) enclosed cargo trailer. I had a professional welder install it, loaded the trailer to 10k, and pulled it 2,000 miles. Works and looks as expected.

by:

Great products

by:

Quality Seems Great. I did incur a problem with this coupler being slightly wider than the original one that I cut off. This could be in part that I'm switching from a 2" coupler to a 2-5/16". If this is just simply because it's wider you may want to purchase a new bottom jack support plate to install with this. Otherwise excellent service and fast delivery from etrailer yet again!!

by:

Th coupler was installed, and as far as I know, we have not had any issues with this product. The trailer is used regularly to haul steel for our structural steel fabrication shop. Thank you for your excellent service. We buy all of our equipment & trailer products from eTrailer.com.

by:

We are very happy with our purchase and loving working with etrailer! The prices are great and items come quickly. Everyone at etrailer is always so helpful. We always get the small town feel when ordering from them. The coupler we ordered is exactly what was needed for our snowmobile trailer. Thanks!

by:

It works very well. Replaced a 2 side hinge so now I have all 2-5/16 ball hitches.

by:

etrailer is a great site, easy to use, everything came in a reasonable time and in one piece. The prices are very reasonable and I love the free shipping.

by:

Item just as described. Perfect fit. The ONLY part bad on my old coupler was the spring that held the latch down. It would have been great IF someone offered a replacement spring for this BUT it is a welded unit and very hard to remove ANY moving parts. The coupler I ordered was perfect!

by:

As described. Looks good to go.

  • Replacement Coupler for a Atwood 8.5k 80101
Hey Glenn, thanks for the information! For an upgraded replacement option, I recommend the Demco 50-Degree A-Frame Trailer Coupler w/ Jack Hole item # 12660-97SP. This coupler has the same fit as your Atwood but it has an upgraded latch that makes connecting and disconnecting easier. The EZ-Latch system automatically snaps into place when you lower it down on a hitch ball. The latch is made of a polymer-nylon-resin that is corrosion proof and impact resistant. You won't have to grease...

  • What Trailer Frame Angle Should A-Frame Trailer be Made to To Fit Standard Couplers
So the standard angle for A-frame trailers where the two beams meet is 50 degrees. So while I can't get you a CAD drawing for the coupler part # CA-5400-B if you are trying to design your trailer to have the correct angle for the A-frame you should make it as close to 50 degrees as you can and standard couplers like this will fit and work well.

  • Recommended Best Theft Protection Lock for a Trailer Coupler w/a Angled Lip Past the Receiver?
No, it will not Glenn. The ICON Trailer Coupler Lock for Flat Lip 2-5/16" Ball Coupler item # AL63DQ requires a flat lip around and behind the receiver like our product pictures show. It looks like your trailer's coupler is similar to the item # CA-5400-B where the lip drops off right below the latch. I recommend the BulletProof Hitches Extreme Duty Coupler Lock item # BPH96VR. This lock is built with a hardened solid steel bar to resist cutting and tampering, which also doubles as a...

  • Solution for Needing Shelby Coupler Repair Kit 5104
Hey Ed, we can help but we don't have repair kits for the Shelby A-Frame coupler you have. Best option would be to replace the coupler like with the Fulton A-Frame Coupler part # FE443050303 which also has a 2-5/16 inch ball size. We do not carry the Shelby brand at this time so we can't get any of their repair kits.

I sure do Jeremy. The Fulton A-Frame Coupler, 2-5/16" Ball item # F44305R0317 has the standard 50 degree angle for mounting to the trailer frame and overall measures 12-1/4" long x 11-1/4" wide. It works with a 2-5/16" and has a 10,000 lbs capacity. What kind of trailer do you have? • Is There a Repair Kit For a Thumb Latch Coupler # CA-5400-B?
Currently the only way to replace the coupler mechanism on the A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5400-B is to replace the entire coupler. If you are going to do this you should look at changing to the Demco 50-Degree A-Frame Trailer Coupler # 12660-97SP as it is much easier to use and can be repaired with the Repair Kit # DM6008 in the event it breaks down the road.

  • Solution for Repair Kit for A-Frame Coupler Latch on 1969 Airstream
I do have a solution, but those repair kits are designed for an Atwood coupler and have been discontinued. Atwood couplers are no longer made so neither are the parts. The best solution is to replace the coupler with a new one. For a weld-on option you could use the # CA-5400-B or for a bolt-on the # DM13205-95. I have attached some review videos along with a link to all of our A-frame 2-5/16 couplers for your reference.

  • Can Atwood Coupler Be Repaired on Vintage 1967 Airstream Travel Trailer
According to my research your 1967 Airstream would need the Atwood Repair Kit AT88061, but unfortunately Atwood has gone out of business so this is no longer available. To get a working coupler again you'll need to have your current coupler cut off and a new one welded on, for which I recommend the 14K etrailer A-Frame Trailer Coupler - Thumb Latch - Black - 2-5/16" Ball # CA-5400-B. Instead, I recommend replacing the entire coupler for which you can use the A-Frame Trailer Coupler part # CA-5400-B.
