Replacement Coupler for a Atwood 8.5k 80101

Updated 03/21/2026 | Published 03/18/2026

Question:

Hi, I have a Atwood 8.5k 80101 a frame trailer coupler on my trailer. The ball size is 2 5/16. These are non locking latches and mine is pretty worn out. I was wondering if I could get a few options on what I could replace it with. Thanks.

Hey Glenn, thanks for the information!

For an upgraded replacement option, I recommend the Demco 50-Degree A-Frame Trailer Coupler w/ Jack Hole item # 12660-97SP. This coupler has the same fit as your Atwood but it has an upgraded latch that makes connecting and disconnecting easier.

The EZ-Latch system automatically snaps into place when you lower it down on a hitch ball. The latch is made of a polymer-nylon-resin that is corrosion proof and impact resistant. You won't have to grease it or be worried about it rusting up and being difficult to release.

The A-Frame Trailer Coupler item # CA-5400-B is the closest replacement option we have for your Atwood 8.5k 80101 features wise. It has a 2-5/16" coupler and fits the same 50 degree a-frame. This weld on coupler also includes pre-drilled holes for a trailer jack that fits a standard a-frame pattern.

What kind of trailer do you have?

I highly recommend the Demco with EZ-latch. I replaced the coupler on my trailer, 41 years old. 7K capacity trailer. The construction of the Demco made the original look downright silly. Installation was straight-forward simple, if you have decent fabrication skills. Hitching is very easy with this unit. The one thing I do not care about on the Demco is it requires a rather unique locking pin for security. ETrailer does carry this lock. Nothing conventional will work, that I have seen.
